Language: latin Format: Other Binding type: Unbound Leaves Condition: Good- perfect text. Loose binding Pages: Handwritten pages: 0 White pages: 0 Item ... morecode: 51-051214MON- E Very rare Antiphonary Fragment datable around XVth Century. The manuscript is a little part of a huge book of Gregorian Chants. And the songs are the Glory and the Kyrie Eleison. On both sides we can appreciate some capital letters illuminated, in light blue and red ink, as it was used to be from the Middle Age till the Renaissance. The Manuscript is on very beautiful clean and very clear vellum. This means that this Antiphonary was a supply of a very important church or Cathedral. As unfortunately happens. Antiphonaries that arrive to our days are mostly fragmented, as due to the high quality of the vellu, they were used in Renaissance to bind books. Size: 9.5"x6,3/4" A real fragment of religious history that comes to our days. I mportant to know: buying a manuscript or an autograph is not a purchase. But an investment. These items keep and increase their value year by year. Very good preservation status considering the age. Some ink removed but the remaining shadow is still perfectly legible. A Late Medieval Music Manuscript, Gregorian Chant, Magnificent Illuminations
Auction description The musical content of this beautiful and ancient vellum manuscript leaf honors two saints of the church: the first two songs are for the evangelist Saint Matthew. To be sung on the day of his birth. The bottom one gives the beginning of a song in honor of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary. A translation of the first song reads like this: The mouth of the righteous shall mediate wisdom. And his tongue shall speak judgement. The law of God is in his heart. The chants themselves goes back probably to the eleventh or twelfth centuries; this folio sized leaf is several centuries old. In my judgement late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. I'm not enough of a scholar to be able to say with certainty where in Europe it was copied, but Spain would be a plausible guess. Besides the lovely and crystal-clear musical ... morecalligraphy. The outstanding visual elements are the two large, illuminated letter, O" and"I" just magnificent work in late medieval style with wonderful semi-abstract and vegetal patterns inside the letters, and the two smaller illuminated letters"N" and"G" They are all unusually good. Contemplating that elaborate"O" really puts your mind in a different place! The effect of this leaf on a wall is very strong because of the illuminations. It was my home library decoration for a couple of years, and I have loved it. Dimensions of the sheet are about 19.25 inches by 13.75 inches. It has been laid down onto a board. With the included mat. Dimensions are about 24.5 inches by 18 inches. Excepting the fact that it has been glued down, the vellum leaf is in very good condition, with only a little edge staining. It was really and truly used to sing from. You can see in the lower right corner where the monks who sang the music left their thumb prints as they flipped the page(originally from a large book) over. Despite the fact that it was really a practical copy, the colors of the illumination are wonderful. Offered at modest price considerin

Very large illuminated medieval music leaf on vellum with large decorative initial. Matted and ready to hang in your home. A beautiful handwritten original missal of Gregorian chant. This antiphonal leaf contains a beautiful initial measuring about 5 x 3.5 inches. The leaf is written in 5 line staff. Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts. Matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers, and compline. They were used by priests, ... moremonks and nuns in churches and other religious institutions. The large size allowed them to be seen by multiple members of a choral section. Probably Spanish. From the 17th century; acquired on a family visit to Spain.

Vellum Leaf from Monastery Gregorian Chant Prayer Book, Dated 1600 - 1650
R are leaf from monastery Gregorian Chant book. Dated 1600- 1650. Overall size is 24-1/2 high by 16-1/2 wide. Scribed on both sides. For early music collectors or history of Christianity enthusiasts. Some years ago I sent photos to two experts in early music. Their opinions are below. They did it because of their passion for early music. I want to emphasize that they did not inspected this leaf in-person because they were in distant states. It is however. The best information I have. Buyer will verify to buyer's own satisfaction as to the dating and source of this leaf. Sold as is. This is what they emailed to me: First opinion: The leaf is most certainly Spanish. C. 1600-1650. The text is for a period after the Epiphany. and. Second opinion: I looked at the photos and Boyd's response and have actually located the chant for you(in ... morecase you have not already found it) It is the chant used for Sunday Communion(Year C) on January 7 or 8. Depending on the where Epiphany falls(Jan 6) in relationship to the next Sunday. The text is from St John 2: 7-9 and 10-11 and is the story of the changing of water into wine at the Wedding Feast at Cana. Your page, in particular, contains the"moment of surprise" as the servant realizes this is now the good wine(the actual range of the chant rises considerably at this moment helping express the surprise! If you have a Graduale Triplex, take a look on page 263, bottom half of the page, and you will see the chant from which your page comes. It is also interesting because your page. Which is a relatively( late page(according to the information from Boyd) in relationship to the earliest known sources for this chant, indicates some changes from earlier versions(the earliest source known from Einsedeln, beginning of the 11th century) Note the musical notation. Neumatic notation. The notes are called nuemes. Again. I am not qualified to date the age or source of this two-sided Gregorian chant music. I've relied on two experts but the buyer should get an opinion based u

Antiphonary Section 1400 Gregorian Chant Vellum Illuminated Kyrie and Gloria
Language: latin Format: Other Binding type: Unbound Leaves Condition: Good- perfect text. Loose binding Pages: Handwritten pages: 0 White pages: 0 Item code: 51-051214MON- E Very rare Antiphonary Fragment datable around XVth Century. Size: 9.5"x6,3/4" ... moreA real fragment of religious history that comes to our days. I mportant to know: buying a manuscript or an autograph is not a purchase. But an investment. These items keep and increase their value year by year. Very good preservation status considering the age. Some ink removed but the remaining shadow is still perfectly legible. There is a Latin inscription which I photographed which says, Finita Epift, ce lebrans incipit proftea chor, profequit V" or something close to that. The Manuscript itself is 15" wide X 22" high and the frame which is in good, solid shape is cream colored and highly decorative wood measuring 21" wide X 27" high. There is clean plexiglass over the manuscriptThe manuscript paper itself is slightly faded on the bottom 5 inches and slightly discolored on the bottom right corner. I am not sure about the flip side of the manuscript, but it is written in Gregorian chant as well, and looks clear. Top right corner is written the page number"94"
