You are bidding on a very rare leaf of musical score and Latin/Psalms/ Biblical lyrics. Hand- painted in black and red with great designs. Initials and intricate details. INCLUDING A RARE MINIATURE, BEING A GOLDEN INITIAL W ITH FRUIT AND FLORAL DESIGNS AROUND IT. C1450- 1600. Manuscript musical score and Latin lyrics on well aged vellum; in red and black ink with color highlights to illuminated letters. 24" x 16.5" Sight condition overall very nice. With some fading and rubbing off of paint to verso, some very light staining, a few small holes and edge chips, and some fading, as shown. Undated. But main text and vellum are ancient and carry characteristics of the late 15th to early 17th century, probably from an Italian antiphonary. Miniature in nice shape. Illuminated manuscript, Roman Catholic Music written in Latin with page number
15 inches by 19.5 inches red and black on what we belive to be Vellum Manuscript Musical Score. Condition is acceptable, there are wrinkles in the paper, a few instances of ink rubbing off, a few small holes and a torn corner lower right hand. Printed front and back. The back side is in better condition, probably due to being covered and not exposed to light. On the back side bedised red and black there is some gold printing used to highlight the musical notes and text. It is undated but based on internet research, may be as old as 15th to 17th century. It is framed in an inexpensive wood frame with glass, that it has been in it for years.

A Late Medieval Music Manuscript, Gregorian Chant, Magnificent Illuminations
Auction description The musical content of this beautiful and ancient vellum manuscript leaf honors two saints of the church: the first two songs are for the evangelist Saint Matthew. To be sung on the day of his birth. The bottom one gives the beginning of a song in honor of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary. A translation of the first song reads like this: The mouth of the righteous shall mediate wisdom. And his tongue shall speak judgement. The law of God is in his heart. The chants themselves goes back probably to the eleventh or twelfth centuries; this folio sized leaf is several centuries old. In my judgement late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. I'm not enough of a scholar to be able to say with certainty where in Europe it was copied, but Spain would be a plausible guess. Besides the lovely and crystal-clear musical ... morecalligraphy. The outstanding visual elements are the two large, illuminated letter, O" and"I" just magnificent work in late medieval style with wonderful semi-abstract and vegetal patterns inside the letters, and the two smaller illuminated letters"N" and"G" They are all unusually good. Contemplating that elaborate"O" really puts your mind in a different place! The effect of this leaf on a wall is very strong because of the illuminations. It was my home library decoration for a couple of years, and I have loved it. Dimensions of the sheet are about 19.25 inches by 13.75 inches. It has been laid down onto a board. With the included mat. Dimensions are about 24.5 inches by 18 inches. Excepting the fact that it has been glued down, the vellum leaf is in very good condition, with only a little edge staining. It was really and truly used to sing from. You can see in the lower right corner where the monks who sang the music left their thumb prints as they flipped the page(originally from a large book) over. This is a rare find with the Monks illustrated on the Music sheet. it was purchased in Spain many years ago but the language is Latin. It is 2 side but the framing prevents you from seeing the other side. It is very clean with no tears or worm holes. It was framed 6 years ago. The sheet has a little bit of wrinkling which you can see in the photos. The outer measurement is 27 inches by 20 inches and the inner measurement is 22 by 14 1/2 inches. I am not sure on the dating this piece. It is estimated.

The script is in a Monastic gothic hand and the music consists of six staves of four-lines each. Musical staves are in red ink with notes and text in black ink. The larger and more decorative initials are in red or red and black. A Responsorial is any psalm, canticle, or other sacred music which is recited or sung after a reading during the church service. Customarily, this occurs with a cantor or small group singing verses while the whole choir or congregation responds with a refrain. Traditionally, Responsorials are sung in Gregorian Chant. Antique Sheet Music Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum Roman Catholic
This is an antique piece of sheet music on vellum(animal hide) and has been calligraphed in black and red ink. It's double sided and both sides can be seen easily in the double-sided frame that has clear glass on both sides. I'm no expert in historical or antique books. Music, or other printing so the best I can tell you about this is that such items are often Italian but can be from virtually any European country. Also, it is clear that this is all done painstakingly by hand. It looks like it is one page taken out of a large book of such manuscripts. Sadly. I have trouble interpreting a few of the letters so I haven't even tried to do a Google translation from the original Latin to anything else. Maybe a bidder out there is more astute in this regard than me and can provide me with a translation to share with the bidding public. ... moreIt is in very nice condition and the manuscript measures out at approximately 21 inches by 15.5 inches. The frame is just a little wider and taller. Although the frame is clearly intended to be hung on the wall. It can be easily picked up so that the reverse side can also be viewed. An elegant antique representation of what I suspect is Roman Catholic. Such manuscripts were made as far back as the mid 1400's and as recent as the 1700's as far as I can gather. From other examples I've found online my guess is that this piece was made between the 1600's and 1700's. In particular, I like the artistic rendering of very large capital letters as you can see in the photos in this auction.
