It is written in a Dead Latin Langauge but at one time I had it partly translated but I forgot what it said. I know not very bright on my part. But I do remember that it is a plainsong about the apostle James. It is hand done on vellum. It is 2 sided the front is the begining of the song and the back is the end. It is framed in heavy glass on both sides there are 2 screws with just and old cord hooked on it to hang it from but it works. Pages are about 24 by 17. Because of the weight and size of this shipping will be around $30 to $40 depending on where you live.

Formerly in the collection of the late Astor Rosenbaum have surfaced. The present page undoubtedly belonged to this important 13th century Psalter. Of which illuminated pages were sold a.o. for auction at Sotheby's, London(25 April 1983, lot 69, sold to Quaritch) also lot 14, Dec. 1991, lot 6 in Dec.1992, another was offered for sale at Maggs( cat. 1340, No. 4) Three other leaves were present in the exhibition on private prayerbooks in Cologne. He is sitting on a small island, writing on a scroll put on his knees, the letters"INSO. On a neighboring island, his symbol the crowned eagle advanced towards him, wings deployed holding in its beak the inkwell and pen holder. In the background rise high rocks and a large curved castle in a water landscape. Former collection Daniel Burckhardt-Wildt(1752-1819) Industrial business man in Basel(Switzerland) watercolorist, printmaker and art collector. This miniature was part of an album(f.10) of miniatures that he acquired from another painter and art collector Peter Birmann. Basel(1758-1844) P. Birmann made many trips to Paris from 1795 to buy works of art(mostly paintings, prints, ... moredrawings, bronzes, marbles) and acquired this album in Paris in 1796. Authentic. Original very very old large sheet of vellum with hand-drawn musical notations and fancy drawn letters, and it is double sided and beautiful on both sides. See all pics for the condition. This is in"fair" condition- there's a few tears at the edges in a couple places, and a little damage along the top edge etc as you can see, but overall the piece is intact, strong, and beautiful, especially considering it is very, very old, I am told it dates to the 1500s or 1600s and I was told this is a page from a book from an ancient European church, possibly an Antiphonal or possibly a Gregorian Chant. Long ago they used to cut up these hymnal type books and sell off the individual vellum pages like this because of their inherent handmade beauty. I recently acquired a few of these from a local high-end estate. Guaranteed old ... moreand authentic vellum sheet with handmade antique drawing/writing. This is old antique animal vellum(has the correct feel for the two sides of vellum, one side smooth and the other a bit rougher) and is obviously hand drawn. Beautiful Genuine Medieval French Illuminated Bible Manuscript Page
This is a page from a Bible manuscript. Hand copied and illustrated with painted initials in Northeastern France in the mid-to-late 1200's. The text is the epistle of James, or Iacobi in the Latin at the top of this leaf. The language of the text is Latin, as it was for virtually all Christian scriptural texts in this period. The large figurative initial extending the whole length of the page marks the beginning of the book; note the colored chapter number I in the left margin, and II in the right margin with a smaller painted initial. Two initials-the large one and another on the other side of the leaf-are illuminated: that is, they include touches of burnished gold as well as painted areas. Although some now use the phrase"illuminated manuscript" to describe any hand-written text with painted illustration, true illumination, ... moreor"lighting up" with gold, is a feature of luxurious manuscripts. There are other signs that this detached page was part of a high quality book: the vellum, or leather that supports the text is very thin and refined-as thin as a modern piece of fine notepaper, and semi-translucent. Dimensions are: height: 11.5" width: 7.5" The photos look a bit out of square because I do not have a tripod, and it is difficult to center the camera over the piece and hold it exactly level. Width at top and bottom differs by less than an eighth of an inch. The ink used to write the text has faded slightly to a mid-value brown. But the paint retains jewel-like blues and reds along with paler colors. Manuscript books, unlike paintings on panels or walls, spend most of their lives closed, protecting their painted decorations and illustrations from fading through exposure to light. The book of which this leaf was a part, probably remained intact until the late nineteenth or even well into the twentieth century. Illuminated Vellum Leaf from an Italian Medieval Manuscript Book of Hours c.1460
This is a single vellum leaf from a tiny(93mm x 62mm) late medieval book of hours penned in Italy approximately 1460. This page has 13 lines of text per side of abbreviated medieval Latin in a fine rounded Gothic hand that would seem to imply an origin in the Bolognia region. It is ever so lighly ruled with a plummett(early pencil/lead stick) it has a single burnished gold two line letter"L" and 10 single line initials in alternating blue and red. In the third photo you can see that the"L" is pristine and unrubbed. When you mouse over the red and blue initials you can see in the closeup the guide letters that the scribe wrote so the illuminator would know what letter to paint in. You are bidding on a striking and very rare vellum leaf of musical score from a Catholic Antiphonal. Highlighted with a beautifully illuminated large golden hand painted miniature initial, amongst colorful and gold enhanced floral and fruit intertwined borders on both sides. Circa mid/late 1300s. Initial with miniature painting of golden floral design. As shown with some age rubbing and some color bleeding on it as well as the borders. Undated. But main text and vellum share characteristics possibly dating to the mid to late 14th century(4 lined musical bars rather than 5; tight Gothic text with separated lettering) Probably German or Dutch; text in Latin with brown. Black, red and blue initials and script. Page is slightly tanned but overall bright; again with some color toning and rubbing along side with miniature.
