Illuminated Manuscript Leaf from Book of Hours 15th Century
Illuminated Leaf from 15th Century French Book of Hours In the days before printing. 1 Leaf Illuminated Latin Book of Hours Vellum Manuscript Dating to 15th Century
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE First of all. I must mention that this particular leaf of the Latin Book of Hours is one of the most unique and beautiful leaves I have ever seen. It also has a unique design that I have never seen before. It consists of a square divided with red ink into four compartments, which looks like a symbol of the Christian cross. Then I took the time to decipher the main words in a xerox copy of the leaf, and I found to my surprise(and confirmation of my earlier idea) that the word to the next of the design is in fact the Latin word"Cross" see the 2nd scanned image. Illuminated Vellum Leaf from an Italian Medieval Manuscript Book of Hours c.1460
This is a single vellum leaf from a tiny(93mm x 62mm) late medieval book of hours penned in Italy approximately 1460. This page has 13 lines of text per side of abbreviated medieval Latin in a fine rounded Gothic hand that would seem to imply an origin in the Bolognia region. It is ever so lighly ruled with a plummett(early pencil/lead stick) it has a single burnished gold two line letter"L" and 10 single line initials in alternating blue and red. In the third photo you can see that the"L" is pristine and unrubbed. When you mouse over the red and blue initials you can see in the closeup the guide letters that the scribe wrote so the illuminator would know what letter to paint in. Particularly the 3rd. 4th, and 5th initials on the side with the"L" The leaf itself is overall very clean and un-thumbed. Because of ... moreit's small size it was probably made for a woman; it's owners have used it very gently over the centuries. The text is from the 3rd Canonical hour of Terce; Joy of the Pilgrim Entering Jerusalem" it is Psalm 121 in the Vulgate Bible or 122 in the King James Version. Starting with the gold"L" it follows: Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi: In domum Domini ibimus. Stantes erant pedes nostri. In atriis tuis, Jerusalem. Jerusalem, quae aedificatur ut civitas: cujus participatio ejus in idipsum. Illuc enim ascenderunt tribus, tribus Domini: testimonium Israël, ad confitendum nomini Domini. Quia illic sederunt sedes in judicio, sedes super domum David. Rogate quae ad pacem sunt Jerusalem(Notice that Jerusalem is spelled in an"H" hierusalem) The English translation of this passage from the Douay-Rheims Bible is: I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: We shall go into the house of the Lord. Our feet were standing in thy courts. O Jerusalem. Jerusalem, which is built as a city, which is compact together. For thither did the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: the testimony of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord. Because their seat
