An original hand-scribed leaf from a manuscript Antiphonal on parchment or vellum. The manuscript text and music were beautifully executed by hand. I'm not sure of the country of origin. But from the research that I did, I think it is Italian. If anyone has information about it, or can translate the Latin, it would be greatly appreciated. This is an original. Not a reproduction, and its condition is shown in the photos. There is a slice in the vellum in the lower bottom margin- not extending into the music or text that is conserved from further tearing with paper on both sides. There is a bit of staining, some wrinkling of the vellum and wear to the text and music on this leaf– completely expected given its age and use! Toning along bottom may be from previous framing mat. It also has a unique design that I have never seen before. It consists of a square divided with red ink into four compartments, which looks like a symbol of the Christian cross. Then I took the time to decipher the main words in a xerox copy of the leaf, and I found to my surprise(and confirmation of my earlier idea) that the word to the next of the design is in fact the Latin word"Cross" see the 2nd scanned image. A single leaf(f. 37r-v; the number is written in pencil in the upper right corner of the recto. Barely visible in the first picture) from a miniature Book of Hours or Psalter, with decorated initials in gold, blue, and red. The leaf measures only 76 x 54 mm, and the vellum is extremely thin, ca. 0.08 mm. Portions of the original hinge remain(see pictures) The text is Psalm 62(Vulgate) assigned to Sunday Lauds in the Roman Breviary, complete from the beginning(Deus, deus meus” through“tradentur in. The initial letter of each verse is illuminated. The hand(hybrida) is a typical continental hand of the fifteenth century. The pictures constitute part of the description. Very lightly toned, small mount residue in the corners. Mild water stains on the blank right margin, small needle holes on the blank bottom margin, but overall a very good leaf with bright initials. Description: This is a truly fantastic example of a Renaissance period illuminated manuscript page. The painted vellum(animal skin) leaf is from a rather large 15th century antiphonary. Or liturgical choir music book. The page boasts one of the finest and most intricate initials we have ever seen, with the letter"C" taking the form of a multicolored serpent, set in an exquisite landscape. The artist shows his mastery of atmospheric perspective in his treatment of the lush rolling hills seen in the landscape.
