He claimed to have been born in Samosata. In the former kingdom of Commagene, which had been absorbed by the Roman Empire and made part of the province of Syria. In his works, Lucian refers to himself as an"Assyrian"5] and"barbarian" perhaps indicating"he was from the Semitic and not the imported ... moreGreek population" of Samosata.6] There are more than eighty surviving works attributed to him– declamations, essays both laudatory and sarcastic, satiric epigrams, and comic dialogues and symposia with a satirical cast, studded with quotations in alarming contexts and allusions set in an unusual light, designed to be surprising and provocative. His name added lustre to any entertaining and sarcastic essay: more than 150 surviving manuscripts attest to his continued popularity. The first printed edition of a selection of his works was issued at Florence in 1499. His best known works are A True Story(a romance, patently not"true" at all, which he admits in his introduction to the story) and Dialogues of the Gods(Θεῶν διάλογοι) and Dialogues of the Dead(Νεκρικοὶ Διάλογοι) Lucian was trained as a rhetorician. A vocation where one pleads in court, composing pleas for others, and teaching the art of pleading. Lucian's practice was to travel about, giving amusing discourses and witty lectures improvised on the spot, somewhat as a rhapsode had done in declaiming poetry at an earlier period. In this way Lucian travelled through Ionia and mainland Greece, to Italy a

Isocrates(436–338 BC) An ancient Greek rhetorician, was one of the ten Attic orators. Among the most influential Greek rhetoricians of his time, Isocrates made many contributions to rhetoric and education through his teaching and written works. His pupil, Tisias, was influential in the development of the rhetoric of the courtroom, and by some accounts was the teacher of Isocrates. Within two generations, rhetoric had become an important art, its growth driven by the social and political changes, such as democracy and the courts of law. A rare edition of Isocrates speeches printed in Latin with side by side Greek text. Some light dampstain. But a very good copy printed on fresh and crisp Renaissance paper. 1524 Herodian, rare Aldine edition in Latin & Greek, Herodiani Historiarum libri
heroal Syrus Herodianus Herodiani Historiarum libri 8 graece pariter& latine Venetiis: in aedibus Aldi. Et Andreae Asulani soceri 1524 Greek and Latin text A very rare Aldine imprint of Syrus Herodianus"Herodiani Historiarum libri 8 graece pariter& latine" Printed in Venice by Aldi. Et Andreae Asulani soceri in 1524 This is a rare aldine book with both Latin and Greek texts. Taken from the elegant Latin version by Poliziano. Published for the first time in 1493 in folio, here together with the original Greek. Herodian or Herodianus of Syria. Sometimes referred to as"Herodian of Antioch" c. 170– c. 240) was a minor Roman civil servant who wrote a colourful history in Greek titled History of the Empire from the Death of Marcus in eight books covering the years 180 to 238. His work is not entirely reliable although ... morehis relatively unbiased account of Elagabalus is more useful than that of Cassius Dio. He was a Greek(perhaps from Antioch) who appears to have lived for a considerable period of time in Rome, but possibly without holding any public office. From his extant work, we gather that he was still living at an advanced age during the reign of Gordianus III, who ascended the throne in 238. Beyond this, nothing is known of his life. Herodian writes(i.1.§ 3, ii.15.§ 7) that the events described in his history occurred during his lifetime. Photius(Codex 99) gives an outline of the contents of this work and passes a flattering encomium on the style of Herodian, which he describes as clear, vigorous, agreeable, and preserving a happy medium between an utter disregard of art and elegance and a profuse employment of the artifices and prettinesses which were known under the name of Atticism, as well as between boldness and bombast. He appears to have used Thucydides as a model to some extent, both for style and for the general composition of his work, often introducing speeches wholly or in part imaginary.
