1510 LIVES OF ROMAN EMPERORS Suetonius POST INCUNABLE Incunabula
Suetonius Tranquillus(Gaius)C. Suetonii Tranquilli De Vita Caesarum. Florence 1510, A1-Z3 COMPLETE. 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Suetonius(ca. 69/75- after 130) Was an equestrian and a historian during the Roman Empire. His most important surviving work is this set of biographies on the lives of twelve successive Roman rulers, from Julius Caesar until Domitian, entitled De Vita Caesarum. Other works by Suetonius concern the daily life of Rome, politics, oratory, and the lives of famous writers, including poets, historians, and grammarians. A few of these books have partially survived, but many are entirely lost.Suetonius was a close friend to Senator and letter-writer Pliny the Younger. Pliny describes him as'quiet and studious, a man dedicated to writing' Through Pliny, Suetonius came into favour with Trajan and Hadrian. Under Trajan ... morehe served as secretary of studies(precise functions are uncertain) and director of Imperial archives. Under Hadrian, he became the Emperor's secretary. In 122, Hadrian dismissed him for disrespectful behaviour towards Empress Vibia Sabina. Suetonius may have later regained imperial favor under Hadrian and returned to his position. The Twelve Caesars' Probably written in Hadrian's time, is a collective biography of the Roman Empire's first emperors. The book was dedicated to Suetonius' friend Gaius Septicius Clarus, a prefect of the Praetorian Guard in 119. The work tells the tale of each Caesar's life according to a set formula: the descriptions of appearance, omens, family history, quotes, and then a history, often full of spicy, erotic, often pornographic, shocking and cruel details, are given in a consistent order for each Caesar. Book is in good condition for its age with binding being rubbed and worn and especially to the spine. Hinges are cracked and delicate but holding. Pages have some dog earing to 15 leaves. Foxing to the margins on last half of the book. A spill on one page as pictured. Post Incubanle printings of this work never seen for unde

1492 Bible, Bibel, Biblia Latina, Incunable, Inkunabel, Manuscript, Vellum
Sale- $200 discount until Monday- June 23. 1492 Medieval Bible published by Johann Reinhard Gruninger in Strassburg. Germany. This is volume 2 of 4. The Bible text is surrounded by commentary and gloss(Postilla litteralis) by Nicholas de Lyra. Folio. 30 cm(11.5 x 8 inches) two-column, gothic type. This Medieval Bible is exceedingly rare because it is a folio with brightly-colored rubricated blue and red initials and pointers and adorned with hand-written devotional commentary and marginal notes from the period. The book cover is vellum. Worn, stained, but distinctive. While there are Bibles from this period that sell online from time-to-time, most are not rubicated with hand colored initials and do not include devotionally written marginal notes from the period- both of which makes this Bible highly desirable for collections, scholars, archives, ... moreantiquarian book sellers, and Catholics and Protestants seeking to own a half a millennia old Bible and rare piece of Christian history. This Medieval Bible was published the same year Christopher Columbus sailed to America and before Martin Luther gave birth to the Protestant Reformation in Europe in 1517. The Medieval Bible is in good-fair condition. With strong ink and rubrication in many sections except towards the end of the Bible wherein the pages reveal some fading, dampstaining and browning, frayed edges, short tears and some loss of text, occasional foxing- see photographs. Missing pages Ai-5. Y6-8, and the last 72 pages. Overall. This pre-1493 Bible is 523 years-old and is an exceedingly rare piece of Christian and European history, one that will only increase in value with age. For more information. Contact the seller.
