Up for auction is a rare 1744 edition of the comedies of the Roman playwright and former slave. The African-born Terence, bound in vellum or parchment, and published in Venice, entitled PUBLII TERENTII AFRI COMOEDIAE SEX Cum Notis Joh. Minelli. Published by Nicolaum(Nicholas) Pezzana in Venice in 1744. 540 pages plus a lengthy unpaginated index in the rear. A handsome 18th century edition of Terence's popular Latin comedies. Terence was a Roman playwright who was born in North Africa to an enslaved mother. And was later purchased by a Roman Senator and brought to Rome. There, the Senator became so impressed with Terence’s intellect that he gave him his freedom. Terence wrote six plays between 166 B.C. and 160 B.C. and all six have survived to the present day. At the age of 25. Terence left Rome, never to return, and some classical scholars ... moreclaimed he died at sea. He is thought to have been of Libyan descent, and is considered one of the first African writers. His experience of enslavement, liberation and fame resonated particularly strongly in the 18th and 19th century, as opposition to the transatlantic slave trade grew more intense. A small 4" x 6" book. Complete and firmly bound, with well-preserved thin vellum covers. Nearly 2" thick. On spine is penned TERENTII/ Comedie/ Cum Notis/ Minelli. The vellum cover is firmly sewn onto the text block. And has protected the interior nicely. I ... moredo not know much about books. I brought this to someone to get a translation as to what this was about, he gave me a very short synopsis- book is in 2 parts, Part One: Migration after the flood. Migration into Germany, Origin of the name"Teusch" in German, Arrival of Greeks, Italians, Saxons and Danes. Part Two: Land of the Sachsen. Customs and habits of the Sachsens, Forebearers of the Sachsens during Paganism(A.D. 70) Royal House of Sachsen(Saxony) until 1683. Many engraved portraits of branches of family. First few pages shows names and coats of arms, just about each section has what appears to be birth death and marriage records, I do not know all the technical terms in describing the condition of book. There is some soiling to the ends and the corners of the book, a few pages have chipped corners and missing pieces, 1 page in particular is missing about 1/2, the binding is tight, looks pretty good to me, some chipping and tears to a few pages, some print has lightened up a bit, I believe there is a page missing from the front of the book which would have had the title? and also I believe there is a page missing from the back, edge of spine has a couple of
