Leaf, Nuremberg Chronicle, German Edition 1495
Original page from the Nuremberg Chronicle published by Hartmann Schedel in a Latin edition in1493. And a German edition in 1495. This page is from the German edition& measures 16.25” x 11” 41 cm x 27.5 cm) contains 6 hand colored woodcuts. The Chronicle. The first-ever comprehensive history of the world from its creation in 5199 B.C. to the present day(1493 A.D. is one of the last looks at the Medieval world by Medieval man and, with the exception of the Bible, was the most influential book of its day. Illustrated with hundreds of woodblocks, many of which are by Michael Wolgemuth, and some of which are the work of Albrecht Dürer, his apprentice. The Chronicle is a compendium of Christian historical and biblical knowledge as was known on the threshold of the Renaissance. This page is from the German edition& deals with the troubles ... moreof Church& State in& around the year 1400. On the recto are woodcuts of 3 political characters. 1 of which is King Ladislaus of Naples, who alternately defended& coerced Pope Innocent VII in the eternal struggles between Guelph& Gibuline. Pope Innocent, a well-meaning man, was constantly caught up in forces over which he had no control. He is depicted on the verso in a very sad pose. On the verso are 2 other popes along with Innocent, all of whom were caught up in the disintegration of society that led to the Protestant Reformation. Excellent condition overall. A note on hand coloring: The subject of the age and provenance of hand coloring when dealing with examples of incunabula and early printing is a recurrent and confusing one. At the time of the invention of printing by Gutenberg. Around 1453, all books were hand written and almost universally hand colored and decorated. Gutenberg’s first Bible was printed with the expectation that the first initials of paragraphs and the margins of the pages themselves would be hand colored with decorative and fanciful designs in the medieval style as all codices had been since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. L

Two pages(CCLXXVI& CXLI) from two Nuremberg Chronicle(Liber Chronicarum) volumes. 1493 AD, Latin edition, hand colored, incunabula. These two leaves show the dramatic difference between the hand-coloring that was done on Nuremberg Chronicle pages. This work by Hartmann Schedel was printed by Anton Koberger. The foremost printer of the day. It was a history of the world from the Creation to contemporary times(15th C) The work is remarkable for its illustrations, design and woodcuts. The woodcut illustrations included events from the Bible, portraits of Kings, Queens, saints and martyrs. This work was printed in a Latin edition(June 1493) and a German edition(December 1493) The books were originally printed in black and white with the hand-coloring occurring after printing. Nuremberg Chronicle manuscript page, town view Mantua, Latin Poets Scipio africa
Antique Manuscript Page Page from the Nuremberg Chronicle A genuine page from the Nuremberg Chronicle. Printed on both sides of heavy wove paper. One side depicting the Italian city of Mantua under a description of the city in German. The other side showing portraits of poets Nennius. Plautus, Ennius, Scipio africanus also with descriptions of these men in German. The sheet is loosely hinged to a thick black card with a tape that could easily be removed. There is an explanatory card attached to the black card that reads: From the Nuremberg Chronicle. This was one of the greatest publishing ventures of its time. And is known as the Picture Book of the 15th Century. It was printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger in 1493, before the echoes of Columbus' eventful discoveries had reached that busy little city. It contains more than 300 leaves ... moreand about 1900 woodcuts. The type is a modified gothic in high favor with Nuremberg printers at that period, especially for works in Latin. The wood cuts were mostly the work of Micheal Wohlgemuth, and, while not the highest form of art, represented the distinct advance in the technique of engraving. Many of them display a naivete that has contributed hugely to the entertainment of successive generations; and no less ludicrous than certain of these illustrations is the impartial way they are repeated throughout the book, a cut representing first one person, place or event, and then another. This practice, indeed, though not uncommon in early illustrated books, was carried so far in the Nuremberg Chronicle that each portrait or scene does duty, on an average, three times throughout the volume. The excellent paper used in this monumental undertaking came from a mill just outside the town, and, as will be seen, is still in good condition. Condition: The page has been cut from a bound volume. There is soiling at the corners where the page was turned over the previous 5 centuries. There are some brown stains and some minor corner creases. There is a narrow(1/2 inch) reinforcing shee

CONDITION: I acquired this leaf(I believe from Pacific Book Auctions) in top condition. Unframed, and it has been displayed in my library for more than twenty-five years. I cannot remember if there is any darkening to the margins(there often is) but the visible area is clean and untainted. For as long as I have owned this leaf it has been exposed, at most, to dim incandescent light. I have always preferred immaculate books and prints to sunlight and bright lighting, and the ravages to which it subjects works of art.
