Medieval Illuminated Manuscript Bible Vellum Latin Plainsong Apostl James 1450's Up for auction is a very neat old Illuminated plainsong manuscript. It is written in a Dead Latin Langauge but at one time I had it partly translated but I forgot what it said. I know not very bright on my part. But I do remember that it is a plainsong about the apostle James. It is hand done on vellum. It is 2 sided the front is the begining of the song and the back is the end. It is framed in heavy glass on both sides there are 2 screws with just and old cord hooked on it to hang it from but it works. Pages are about 24 by 17. Because of the weight and size of this shipping will be around $30 to $40 depending on where you live.

Book title in red and blue, three one-line chapter numbers in red and blue(with fine scroll work) three one-line chapter initial capital letters in red or blue, sentence capitals highlighted in red. Several marginal notes. Ruling patterns visible. Age appropriate darkening and wrinkling of the thin vellum. One small hole at the top of the leaf, not affecting text. Dimensions: 5 3/4" x 4" This leaf contains text from chapters IIII- VII of"The Apocalypse of St. John the Apostle" or"The Revelation of St. John the Divine" in the King James Version) These chapters describe The Seven Seals including the descriptions of the four horsemen.

The leaf came from a complete Torah Bible scroll that has deteriorated and what was left from it is several incomplete leaf's. The text. In the Hebrew script is from the Book of Exodus, chapter 9, verse 3 to chapter 9, verse 21. Text is dated within the period based on the characters of the letters. For example the Hebrew Letter"Peh" פ" has a double swirl as the custom of script in that era. The leaf measures approximately 11" x 8. at there longest point though top edges are uneven. Fragments of this age are not found and extremely important for its utmost rarity of the earliest examples of the Ashkenaz Jewish tradition. You are bidding on a very large vellum leaf of Catholic music in Latin consisting of antiphonary prayers. Hand- painted with large clear lettering and beautifu l patina. C1 4 50/1500s. Manuscript in Latin lyrics on well aged vellum; in black ink. Probably of Spanish origin. 22" x 16" Sight condition overall acceptable, with some aging/fading and rubbing off of paint from dampstaining, some light staining, a few small holes and edge chips, and corners with loss, as shown. Undated. But main text and vellum are ancient and carry characteristics of the late 15th to early 17th century(any info welcomed) Again. Sale ends this Monday-June 23! This rare and wonderful 1541 Bible is complete. With the Old and New Testaments, including the Table of Contents. It was in use when both Protestant Martin Luther and John Calvin were spreading the Protestant Reformation throughout western Europe. What's most remarkable about this Bible(and why most pre-1546 Bibles are so valuable) is that after the Council of Trent. They issued a new authorized version of the Latin Vulgate that left out certain books considered Deuterocanonical such as Ezra 3 and 4. On page 205, a priest or scholar wrote"None approbotus iste Esilio( liber a Concilio Ciedentinco( a clear reference to Ezra 4 since two"x" marks can be found next to the top and bottom of Ezra 4. The fact that this Bible was not destroyed was probably due to the fact that it was purchased by leaders ... morein the Dominican order and housed in a Dominican library. As evidenced by the two Dominican library stamps on the inside. After the Council of Trent, this Bible would have been considered unauthorized at best and heretical at worst by some of the leaders in the Inquisition. It's preservation is probably in part due to the fact that it ended up in the hands of the Dominicans. The order given the primary responsibility for carrying out the Inquisition. This pre-Tridentine Bible is also valuable because of it's small 8vo size. 18.5 x 12.6 x 4 cm. Small Bibles were rather rare, relatively expensive, and produced primarily for clergy and wealthy aristocrats and pious merchants. Unlike many pre-1550 Bibles which are often tattered with broken or loose bindings. This Bible's binding is in full calf vellum and is sturdy, tight, and exceptionally strong. 1600-1700 Huge VELLUM Illuminated ROMAN Catholic MANUSCRIPT Bible MUSICAL Music
You are bidding on a strikingly massive and very rare leaf of musical score from a pulpit Catholic Antiphonary. Hand- painted in black and red with precise intricate Latin lettering, circa late 1400s-early 1500s. Manuscript 5-LINE musical score and Latin lettered lyrics. On well aged rippled vellum; in red and black ink, as shown. Leaf measures 23.5" x 16.5. Condition overall quite good. With some small instances of staining, edgewear, and light paint rubbing, as shown; rubbing off moreso to the verso from displaying. Undated. But main text and vellum are ancient and carry characteristics of the early 17th to early 18th century. Beautiful initials throughout- a true showstopper! Ink nice and bright. Although it has some paint fading and a few letters have rubbed off, again mostly to the back, as shown. Still, a great candidate for framing ... morewith added character! Hand- painted in black, blue and red with a beautifully illuminated lined blue and red initial, featuring extensive linework and intricate details, circa 16th-17th century. Large Manuscript leaf with 5-line musical score and Latin Gothic lettered lyrics. On well aged rippled vellum; in red and black ink w/ one large beautiful illuminated capital. With fantastic blue and red detailing, as shown. Measures 23" x 15.5. Probably Italian or Spanish in origin. Condition overall decent. Doubtless Paris, 2nd quarter of 13th Century(ca. 1240) A single leaf embellished WITH TWO SUPERB ILLUMINATED INITIALS. INCLUDING ONE ON GOLD GROUND WITH A GROTESQUE ANIMAL. This leaf from a finely illuminated 13th-century'pocket format' Latin Bible(St Jerome's Vulgate version) contains the Vulgate text of the Book of Haggai from 1:10 to the end(i.e. the entire book save the first 9 verses) the entire text of St Jerome's Prologue to Zechariah(incipit" Secundo anno Darii filii Hystaspis" And an initial portion of the Book of Zechariah from the beginning to the middle of verse 11 of Chapter 1. Text ... morebegins(on recto) with: propter hoc super vos] prohibiti sunt caeli ne darent rorem et terra prohibita est ne daret germen suum. Haggai. 1:10) and ends(on verso) with" et responderunt angelo Domini qui stabat inter myrteta" Zechariah 1:11) The manuscript is written in a very small and neat gothic bookhand.
