Venice 1477AD These beautiful Incunabula leaves are from a very early Italian printing of the" Commentum Super Quarto Sententiarum" Or"A commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, Bishop of Paris" also known as Petrus Lombardus who was a theologian born at Novara, Italy in about 1100. He died 1160. Richardus de Mediavilla(pseud. Richard Middleton) authored this work around the year 1278. The hand painted initials have lovely filigree pen work surrounding them and extending into the margins. One is reminded of the beautiful earlier bibles and religious hand written texts done by skilled scribes. Early printing did not do away with these scribes but redirected their efforts into embellishing the printed page with eye catching highlights. In addition there are small rubrications throughout alternating in red and blue. The wide margins are evidence that these leaves have never been trimmed. A guaranteed old incunabula leaf. Third Book of Kings Chapters 5-6(1 Kings KJV) Anton Koberger printed it on September 6, 1497 at Nuremberg. The folio size heavy paper leaf measures 335 x 230 mm. in totality and contains 46-lines of gothic type(14:130G, 15:91G, 19:71G, 21:74G) surrounded by 71 lines of commentary by the noted theologian Nicholas de Lyra(b. 1270 d.1340) printed double column in Latin. This particular Bible comes from the first of a four-volume set(Genesis through Chronicles) It contained the usual introduction from St. Jerome but the most interesting aspect was pages 169- 184 were omitted because they were not present at the time of binding.
