Auction description The musical content of this beautiful and ancient vellum manuscript leaf honors two saints of the church: the first two songs are for the evangelist Saint Matthew. To be sung on the day of his birth. The bottom one gives the beginning of a song in honor of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary. A translation of the first song reads like this: The mouth of the righteous shall mediate wisdom. And his tongue shall speak judgement. The law of God is in his heart. The outstanding visual elements are the two large, illuminated letter, O" and"I" just magnificent work in late medieval style with wonderful semi-abstract and vegetal patterns inside the letters, and the two smaller illuminated letters"N" and"G" They are all unusually good. Contemplating that elaborate"O" really puts your mind in a different place! The effect of this leaf on a wall is very strong because of the illuminations. It was my home library decoration for a couple of years, and I have loved it. Dimensions of the sheet are about 19.25 inches by 13.75 inches. It has been laid down onto a board. With the included mat. Dimensions are about 24.5 inches by 18 inches. Excepting the fact that it has been glued down, the vellum leaf is in very good condition, with only a little edge staining. It was really and truly used to sing from. You can see in the lower right corner where the monks who sang the music left their thumb prints as they flipped the page(originally from a large book) over. Click on the image for a detailed view. This leaf is from a medieval Antiphonal or Responsorial Manuscript. Of German origin, circa mid-fifteenth century, in Latin, on vellum(174x125 mm. The script is in a Monastic gothic hand and the music consists of six staves of four-lines each. Musical staves are in red ink with notes and text in black ink. The larger and more decorative initials are in red or red and black. A Responsorial is any psalm, canticle, or other sacred music which is recited or sung after a reading during the church service. Customarily, this occurs with a cantor or small group singing verses while the whole choir or congregation responds with a refrain. Traditionally, Responsorials are sung in Gregorian Chant. Up for Auction is a museum quality medieval collectors piece. A page from the hymn book of a Spanish monastery. A Gregorian Chant. All done by hand and written on Vellum(calf skin parchment) Dating from around the year 1500. I purchased this piece about ten years ago from Charles Edwin Puckett. One of the most respected and leading dealers of medieval manuscripts and antiquities in the world. It has resided in my private collection. In a smoke free home ever since. The piece was custom framed by Charles Moore. Who specializes in museum quality fine art framing. It has been mounted using non-destructive mounts. Under an acid free matte, using UV light damage resistant glass. The entire frame measures 21' high, by 14' wide. On the back of the frame there is a description tag that reads. The manuscript text and music(seven lines of music on a five line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 500 years ago! Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office. First vespers or the vigil of great feasts. Matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline. Large Medieval Liturgy/Music Manuscript Two Leafs w/One Illuminated Initials Offered are two vellum leafs from a medieval liturgical music manuscript. With one leaf featuring one fabulous large illuminated initial in blue and red. Both leafs are titled, as pictured, and mention the month which appears to be July in Latin and titled St. Jacobi(James) The measurements are 22" by 16. Just stunning. Condition: There is some rippling to the vellum and some foxing as pictured. There is also some darkening on the lower right side and on the back leaf- consistent with the aging.
