This auction is for a very attractive medieval manuscript vellum Book of Hours calendar leaf(month of April) France, Latin text in blue, red and gold, ca. 1450. Highlights include the decorative panel borders with bright gold and large gold"KL" initials. This leaf is in good condition despite some staining and yellowing in the margins due to a framing job at some point in the past. Illuminated Vellum Leaf from an Italian Medieval Manuscript Book of Hours c.1460
This is a single vellum leaf from a tiny(93mm x 62mm) late medieval book of hours penned in Italy approximately 1460. This page has 13 lines of text per side of abbreviated medieval Latin in a fine rounded Gothic hand that would seem to imply an origin in the Bolognia region. It is ever so lighly ruled with a plummett(early pencil/lead stick) it has a single burnished gold two line letter"L" and 10 single line initials in alternating blue and red. In the third photo you can see that the"L" is pristine and unrubbed. When you mouse over the red and blue initials you can see in the closeup the guide letters that the scribe wrote so the illuminator would know what letter to paint in. Particularly the 3rd. 4th, and 5th initials on the side with the"L" The leaf itself is overall very clean and un-thumbed. There are 2 frames back to back each holding 2 leaves. There is nothing seperating the leaves in the frames so you can see one leaf through the other in some instances. Each leaf has 14 lines of text and 3 of the leaves have large decorated initials. The color is good with dark brown black and red latin calligraphy on vellum. It looks like very very fine suede. There are places where it is starting to fade but. Is still very readable. Each page features gold painted ivy and floral motifs along the side. There are 2 in the frame back to back with nothing seperating them so you can see one leaf through the other in some places. Each leaf has 14 lines of text. One of the leaves has 4 large decorated capital letters. The frame was added much later and is missing a cork pad on one of its feet so it wobbles a little. But, I believe these really need to come out of this frame because they are starting to get some foxing and ... morespots here and there. There is puckering along the edges close to the matting that you can see in the images. I've done alot of research on this and I truely believe they are from the Book of Hours. c1450 Illuminated MEDIEVAL Book of Hours MANUSCRIPT Holy Bible MINIATURE Vellum
You are bidding on a striking and very rare vellum leaf of musical score from a Book of Hours. Highlighted with a beautifully illuminated large miniature hand painted scene, amongst colorful and gold enhanced floral and fruit intertwined borders. Circa mid 1400s. Miniature painting with floral border design. As shown with some age rubbing and some color bleeding on it as well as the borders. Undated. But main text and vellum share characteristics possibly dating to the mid to late 13th century. Also with 2 two line gold burnished initials and 3 one line golden initials. Probably French(use of Rouen) text in Latin with brown. Black, red and blue initials and script. Page is slightly tanned but overall bright; again with some color toning and rubbing along side with miniature. Which is more notably toned than verso. A truly rare and beautiful ... moreleaf. Hand portable, leaf measures 6 3/8" x 4 3/8" miniature measures 1 5/8" x 1 1/2" Good luck!
