This auction is for a super-rare and early vellum Book of Hours manuscript leaf. In Latin, France(Rouen) circa 1430. The leaf measures approx. 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches and is ruled in red with 18 lines of Textura script. Also present on each side is a red and blue bar border in margin with hairline stems sprouting ivy leaves of burnished gold and flowers. Despite some minor rubbing of the text, this large leaf is in very good condition. Bid with complete confidence! Documentation by the previous owner concerning the provenance will be provided to the buyer. Pierre Cauchon was Bishop of Beauvis and Lisieux from 1420 to 1442. Manuscript Bible leaf on vellum most likely from Germany circa 1500's. Written in brown ink on parchment in a distinctive Ashkinazic square script. The leaf came from a complete Torah Bible scroll that has deteriorated and what was left from it is several incomplete leaf's. The text. In the Hebrew script is from the Book of Exodus, chapter 9, verse 3 to chapter 9, verse 21. Text is dated within the period based on the characters of the letters. For example the Hebrew Letter"Peh" פ" has a double swirl as the custom of script in that era. The leaf measures approximately 11" x 8. at there longest point though top edges are uneven. This auction is for a beautiful illuminated manuscript animal-skin vellum(not paper) Book of Hours leaf(Use of Rome) Its provenance is Italy. Probably Tuscany. It dates from the 15th century, about 1450-1470 A.D. This particular manuscript leaf has three(3) colored initials. Made with blue and red ink, with one of them being very large and having ornate filagrees(see the 1st scanned image) This leaf has an unusual and unique design. Which consists of a square divided with red ink into four compartments, which looks like a symbol of the Christian cross. Then I took the time to decipher the main words in a xerox copy of the leaf, and I found to my surprise(and confirmation of my earlier idea) ... morethat the word in the context is"crucis" or the Latin word"Cross" see the 2nd scanned image. 4th line from the top, 1st word on the right) This leaf has the following: two(2) instances of the NOMINA SACRA in the abbreviated form for the word"Domine" abbreviated to"dne, mean ing"O Lord" also. Authentic. Original very very old large sheet of vellum with hand-drawn musical notations and fancy drawn letters, and it is double sided and beautiful on both sides. See all pics for the condition. This is in"fair" condition- there's a few tears at the edges in a couple places, and a little damage along the top edge etc as you can see, but overall the piece is intact, strong, and beautiful, especially considering it is very, very old, I am told it dates to the 1500s or 1600s and I was told this is a page from a book from an ancient European church, possibly an Antiphonal or possibly a Gregorian Chant. Long ago they used to cut up these hymnal type books and sell off the individual vellum pages like this because of their inherent handmade beauty. I recently acquired a few of these from a local high-end estate. Guaranteed old ... moreand authentic vellum sheet with handmade antique drawing/writing. I am not an expert and cannot read this, but if you know more let me know and I will update this. This is old antique animal vellum(has the correct feel for the two sides of vellum, one side smooth and the other a bit rougher) and is obviously hand drawn. The edges are a little rough, see pictures, but the main piece is solid and strong, lays flattish(NOT ROLLED! but it is a bit wavy, and will be shipped flat like this so it will be ready for framing when you get it without having annoying rolling. The edges are rough, but this gives you some area to work with for framing it. See all pics for condition. Currency bill in pics is for size reference only. SIZE: approx. 29" tall and around 21" wide, roughly. WILL BE SHIPPED FLAT! If not satisfied as to authenticity you can return it for money back. But it must be shipped FLAT and arrive in same condition very quickly and buyer pays any return shipping. However if you look at the pictures you will see I have included very good pics so you can see it all quite well, and I am extremely confident of the provenance and origin of this being hundreds of years old.
