Antique Burmese Dha Knife, Sword, Extremely Rare Grip
This is an extremely rare dha. About 30cm OAL. Typically these will have a tusk or tooth in the grip, but this particular example has a tooth from a certain large feline predator, making it a very unique example. I am told by an expert on these knives and swords that this animal has very special significance among the Karen people. The rest of the knife is complete. The silver work is excellent. Burmese Kammavaca. Buddhist manuscript, 1880-1930 This kammavaca(Buddhist manuscript) consists of 2 lacquered hardwood covers and 16 leaves, making it a rare complete text. Kammavaca texts typically contain religious instructions for monks. The leaves are also extensively lacquered and decorated with gold and most likely to be based around palm leaves(although the material base can vary) This beautiful example is highly decorated and the leaves carry 6 lines of Pali script as well as Burmese numbering and decorative elements. The small hole in each leave was so they could be placed over a bamboo stick when being read or tied together for storage. Kammacava in this condition, and as a complete set, are increasingly rare as they often split into individual leaf for display purposes. The age of this piece is unknown. It has been a part of my medieval/ skull collection however i am letting some of the items go. This would make a great vintage conversation piece. DIMENSIONS: The overal lenght is 46 inches. the length of just the blade is 30 inches and for the blade and handle is 44-1/2 inches. DETAILS/CONDITION: The sword blade has a cross hatched etching almost the entire length of the blade on both sides and within this area are multiple scene designs hammered in silver wire and silver foil. Antique Burmese Lacquer Octagonal Folding Table Temple Worshipers
Background Information: The art of lacquer is found throughout Europe and Asia. And the lacquer produced in Myanmar(Burma) is among the best in Eurasia. Known as"Pan-Yun" in Burmese, it is one of the highes forms of art in Myanmar. It requires great skill on the part of the artist. Black lacquer is the most commonly used, but an orange lacquer, like this piece(normally called"Red lacquer" is also used. Both come from the sap of the Melanorrohea Usitata tree, a tropical hardwood. The artist begins with a bamboo or, rarely, teak base. He then coats with with a layer of lacquer mixed with ashes and leaves it in a cellar to dry. He repeats this until there are 5 layers, then he adds two more layers of pure lacquer. When it comes time to add color, the artist scratches out lines for one color with a very fine knife, then mixes ... moreone colorant with water and spreads the paste over the item. After letting it set for several days, he wipes off the colorant(which remains in the lines) puts a resin over the colored lines, and starts over with the next color. This continues until all the colors are added. He then polishes the piece with fine talcum powder to remove the resin and make the item shine. The result is what you see here. Piece Description: Red lacquer finish, scene depicting buddhist temple worshipers. Table stands at 14 3/4" and measures 15 1/8" across. This is a great grouping of antique weights with a little stand included. The tallest weights measures 1 5/8" high. The 2 small ones measure 1 1/8" high. Red Lacquer Betel Box Sacred Goose Hintha Burma Temple Container
This is a wonderful Red Lacquered and gilt Temple container in the form of the Hintha(Sacred Goose) This type of bentel box was used in religious ceremonies in Burmese Temples. This particular one does not have the ornate stand that is seen with these sometimes. This piece is heavy red lacquered and gilded heavily with many mirrored pieces and red glass eyes. The box is constructed of wood with gilded red lacquer and the wings are fashioned of a ferrous metal material. It is extremely shiny as you can see in the photos. This came from an estate where there were many Buddhist artifacts from the late 19th and early 20th century. I am not certain of the exact date this piece was made but am guessing late 19th or early 20th. I have enjoyed having this in my home. One of the oldest known existing examples of lacquer work was displayed at an arts exhibition in Rangoon in 1918. It was a plain cylindrical teak box painted with lacquer and yellow ochre and marked with a date that translates to the Gregorian calendar as 1284AD.
