This is a Taisho Era(c. 1920's) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawers and an additional hidden fifth drawer behind a removeable area in the flip top lidded top section. The top removeable area is divided into two sections with an additional removeable pin cushion box on the left(see picture 7) This tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables in the hidden fifth drawer. Here is a stunning and very desirable approximately 150 year old antique Japanese small Choba tansu. Or merchant's chest, dating from the Meiji Era around the mid to late 1800's, featuring a lock bar in the center and classical safe compartment at the bottom right. It boasts a natural light colour with a rich honey patina, beautifully shaped hand forged iron hardware, wood peg construction and 8 drawers of various sizes that provide versatile storage options including a full width drawer at the top. It is in excellent overall condition for it's age. But has a little lock issue: as there is no key and the top drawer lock is in the closed position ... morewith the drawer open it will not shut all the way. The safe compartment has a tendency to swing open by itself since there is no key to lock it. The lock issue does NOT affect the lock bar which slides in and out of place properly. Please read the description and examine the photos for more details on the condition. Locksmiths and larger antique dealers will own sets of multiple keys to fit a broad range of locks so you should be able to get the drawer unlocked easily enough so it slides into place. With a little patience you could also find an antique key that fits right here on ebay(I can recommend a seller who regularly stocks this type of item) Other small issues worth noting are a small repair in the bottom corner of the smallest drawer just above the safe compartment. The larger top drawer is stiff to open and close due to age and needs a tweak, and one corner plate in the back is bent out of shape. Given it's age there is some wearing off of the blackening of a few small spots of the iron, and a couple of small nails are missing. This lovely vintage Art Deco Japanese kyodai. Or mirror stand& vanity dating from the early Showa period between1930 and the early 50's boasts an adjustable 3 way mirror that creates multiple reflections, made in a beautiful extra thick quality glass with beveled borders that still has a very clear reflection for its age. The center below the mirror is adorned with a textured glass surface reflecting a pale blue colour. This piece measures 9.13 inches high by 11.5 inches wide by depth 7 inches deep. This is an antique Japanese sewing box that was finished in Japanese Ash wood called Toneriko on the front and Chestnut wood called Kurinoki on the sides. Back and top. The eye catching attractive swirling grain pattern is very distinctive and attractive that has made this particular style the most prized and in demand of all the Taisho era sewing boxes. The drawer backs are made of Japanese Kirinoki(Paulownia) It was designed and made in Japan to store needles. Threads, buttons, scissors and other sewing paraphernalia. Upon opening the top hinged lid. There are compartments for the storage of thread spools and an area for a pin cushion. There is a rectangle lid with a finger hole to cover the threads. Also, the top of the box as well as the underside of the lid both shows signs of previous sewing use with the marks made by a stitching wheel and straight line marks made by a knife for cutting fabric or leather. These marks add character to the piece and are a testament to its usefulness and loving care. The copper handle pulls are original to this piece while the brass ring pull was a later replacement. Its age is from the early 1920's(late Taisho era in Japan) and its condition is very good especially considering its age. With painted and lacquered panel doors above; these open to reveal not just 6 drawers to the inside, but shibayama panelling on the inside of the doors as well– an unusual decorative touch. This is a late Taisho Era(c. 1926) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawers and an additional hidden fifth drawer located in the flip top lidded top section. The top area is divided into two sections with an additional removeable pin cushion box on the left(see picture 7) and a removeable wooden cover for the mid section. This tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables. The entire box is made with a traditional hinoki wood peg construction(see picture 10) as well as dovetailed corner work(see last picture) The face is made of burled Japanese mulberry wood with kiri(paulownia) wood interiors and zelkova( keyaki) case work. Antique Japanese Tansu style side tables
Tansu is unique cabinetry of Japan. It springs from a rich folk-art tradition and dates back as far as 7th century Japan. Tansu meaning is Chest. The style was the ability to pick up and go with. hence a chest) These tables stand 24" tall and have a 23 3/4" table top that is 24" at the longest. The cabinet is 23" wide and 10 1/2" thick. with a total of 29 1/2" across top front. The Koi fish lock are solid brass and in working condition as are the keys. All trim work is brass also. These tables are very strong and sturdy. There is some damage to them as seen in the pictures. The hinges are in need of repair and original pieces of wood are included for repair. This is an antique Japanese Sea Chest. Traditionally they were used by ship captains as a type of portable office. they would carry important papers. Writing utensils and money. Because they were so practical they were also used by merchants. But they were still called Sea Chests or"Funa-Dansu(Sea Chest) Judging by the hardware, this one was made in the mid to late 1800's. It's had a metal stand made for it so it could be used as an end table or just as a way of displaying it. This stand is included. Antique Japanese Small Tansu Personal Storage Box with Keyed Locks
This is a Japanese small tansu/ personal storage box from the early 1900's(1910- 1930) It has a cedar wood body with all kiri wood drawers. This is a light weight asian wood called paulownia in English) The hardware is copper with an aged patina. This was made in an era when wood pegs were the standard way to join together joints. They don't rust and they expand and contract with the wood in differing levels of humidity. These can be stronger and more durable than nails. The pegs are bamboo and are on the outside and on the inside bottoms of the drawers. There is a close up of these exterior pegs and joints on the side corner panel in photo# 8. A Japanese chabako from the early Showa era(1930s) complete(as pictured) with accessories that I picked up at a dealers' auction in Japan last year. The lidded kiri(paulwonia) wood box includes a door in front of four open areas with a top drawer. All four areas have shelves. Including the lower section, which slide out for ease of accessing the pieces. The front panel(door) slides firmly in place, sitting in some grooved areas top and bottom designed to seal the box. The face(door) has a metal handle for lifting it in and out of the box. The iron top handle acts as a secure means of transport(see picture 2) Chabako were used to store and display tea ceremony implements as well as to carry the necessary tea tools to an appropriate venue to perform the tea ceremony. Known as a chadansu. This chest was made and used about 80 years ago in the early Showa period(c. 1930) The chadansu or tea chest with open area for display of ones prized tea bowls or vases(see first picture) This open area often had side windows like this chest to better view the displayed piece from various angles. This tansu chest is made of solid dove tailed kiri(paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki wood peg construction(see next to last picture) Both drawers as well as the door move easily without binding. We are offering an early antique Korean tansu chest in original finish. I am selling this from my collection. This piece is circa 1800-1900. Dimensions are: 30" high. 34" wide and 17" deep. The inside of the chest is very clean. It lifts down. The chest has handmade original hardware; the lock itself is beautiful. And has old writing on it, The hasp piece that would actually lock it, is long missing. The chest has some of the metal ornamentation missing on the bottom center. There are small tacks over all that are missing, and a slit on the plank on the top of the chest. There are scratches, and marks and general wear over all. consistent with the age of thee piece. JAPANESE ANTIQUE 200 YEAR OLD 1 DRAWER LIDDED SUZURIBAKO CALLIGRAPHY TANSU
This is a very special Japanese one drawer suzuribako(portable calligraphy tansu) made entirely of Japanese kiri(paulownia) wood. This chest shows a high degree of Japanese craftsmanship in the construction. Joined with hardened hinoki wood pegs(see picture 11) This chest was rescued from a 500 year old family warehouse just outside Kyoto and dates to the early 1800's(mid Edo Era) The hand forged iron metal on this chest also date it to the Edo era as all hinges. Corner work and latches are all made of forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer. The drawer pull as well as top handle are also made of hand forged iron. The handles are made in a kakute(square) style which was the most difficult to make as it was necessary to cold chisle it out of a thick bar of forged iron. This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials ... moreas well as money and valuables. The lidded top once held brushes and an ink stone(suzuri) The top interior area as well as the interior of the drawer were finished in black lacquer to help protect them from ink spills. This 200 year old suzuribako has been well used yet well loved and aside from a few areas of iron deterioration and minor wood restoration(see bottom- picture 10 as well as picture 9) it remains in very fine original condition with a patina that only 2 centuries of appreciation could give it. The top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest. The lided top opens with the push of the side buttom(see picture 7) and snaps the top securly in place when the lid is lowered. The drawer lock has been neutralized but its latch will still slide up and down with the push of the lock button(see picture 8) to hold the drawer firmly shut. This Suzuribako chest measures 6" wide by 7" high by 10" deep(15 x 17.5 x 25 cm) A very warm accent for your home or office. This is a very special Japanese three drawer portable chobako(accounting tansu) made of sugi( cryptomeria) wood. This chest shows a high degree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery. Being made with hardened hinoki pegged wood with box corners(see last picture) The thick hand forged metal lock and forged iron corner work on this chest date it conservatively to the early Meiji era(c.1880) The drawer pulls. Corner work, and lock are made of hand forged iron with a protective finish of burnt lacquer. This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials as well as money and valuables. It is overall in very fine condition with a very warm patina that only a century and a half of loving use could give. The drawers run smoothly without binding. The locking mechanizm slides back and forth to hold the door firmly shut(see picture 5) but ... moreno longer locks so doesn't require a key. This chest may once have been covered with a burgundy lacquer finish as seen in photo 7. It has been removed sometime in its lifetime to reveal the more natural cryptomeria wood. Beautiful Antique Japanese Tansu Document Chest, Japan, Drawers, Small Dresser
Up for auction is this beautiful antique Tansu document chest! This chest just has a fantastic look to it. The size of it is 23 inches long by 18 inches tall by 11 inches deep. All the hardware seems to be made of old copper. And I'm not sure what type of wood it is made from. I believe this chest is about 100 to 120 years old, but I'm not sure. The guy I bought it from said it was brought to the United States in the 1950's. As you can see from the pictures, the chest does show wear. The top especially shows wear from things being set on top of it over all the years. Also the wood on the front of the drawers shows wear from all the years of hands reaching in to the handles. There are 3 locks on the chest, but unfortunately I don't have the key. All the drawers open just fine. One of the sliding doors works great, and the other ... moreis a bit stiff. ANTIQUE 160+ YEAR OLD JAPANESE SINGLE ACTION TANSU LOCK WITH KEY
This is an operable Japanese tansu lock made of hand forged iron over 160 years ago(late Edo era) It comes complete with a corresponding key. it came off of an isho-dansu(clothing chest) similar to the one shown in picture 11(not included) from the Tokyo area and is still fully functional. It is made of a durable hand forged iron with a protective coating of Japanese burnt urushi lacquer. It a single action lock. Meaning it can be locked by pushing the"button nub" up without the key, but requires the key to be reopened(see pictures 2, 3) The lock measured 6" wide by 5 1/2" tall(15 x 13 cm) Despite their age, aside from minor oxidation both lock and the key are in very fine condition and still very operable. Building Shaped, C.1930 This is an absolutely stunning piece of antique Japanese furniture. Dating to around 1930. It is a Tansu cabinet(probably a type known as a Haribako, used for storing small objects, and ideal for use as a jewellery cabinet) This example is in a very unusual shape– that of a Japanese house. Complete with windows; the sides pull out to reveal storage for small items, including 3 Mother of Pearl inlaid boxes(there is more MOP on the drawer fronts on the outside) a small footed tray, and 3 small red lacquered trays. The roof is removable. Revealing another 2 compartment, and turned upside down, it turns into another painted and lacquered tray; the top part of the roof lifts out, too, ... moreand becomes yet another small tray. The metalwork appears to be all original, as is the glass, and the cabinet is in excellent all-round condition with only some fading and wear to the exterior. Although such antique Japanese pieces can be found for sale. They are usually rather more plainly decorated then this, and I have never seen one in this shape or style before. This is a wonderful Japanese Tansu that has two large drawers over 2 smaller drawers. Next to the smaller drawers are 2 drawers behind a door and a small drawer. The cabinet has a delightful red lacquer finish. The piece is 33 ¼ inches high. 45 ½ inches wide and 17 ¾ inches deep. The piece has hand worked hardware including handles on the ends. The inside wood appears to be cedar. This piece dates to the 19 th century. Likely to the Meiji period, though it may be earlier. The hachi bowl shows where it was repaired. Probably down though numerous decades. The shikoro neck guard also has a story all its own. You can clearly see that it was once a high grade kebiki lace model that was lacquered over. Was the original shikoro damaged in battle? Couldn’t he afford a new one? Or. Was he in the middle of a battle, and settled for whatever he could get? In any case. The shikoro has also been patched, so it had also seen some battle. The fukigaeshi guards are also unique in that they are attached directly to the hachi bowl. And also point to a change out– more evidence of battle damage. One cool piece. Stand not included.
