RARE JAPANESE UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE 53 STATIONS OF TOKAIDO WOODBLOCK PRINT PORTFOLIO JOANIES IMPORTANT JAPANESE ART NO RESRVE ESTATE AUCTION Hi. Thank you ... morefor having a look at my auctions. Listed this week is an exceptional and important estate collection of Chinese and Japanese Works of Art. This sale will span over three days with hundreds of superb and rarely found examples being offered. Surely one of our finest and most important sales to date. As my auctions have run for over 10 years selling online All the items will be sold to the highest bidder with Absolutely No Reserves. I ask that you only bid on the items if you are serious about purchasing them. If you have any questions in regards to the items or payment please do not hesitate to email me. I do wish everyone the very best of luck winning the auctions! Up for auction is a Very Fine Japanese Woodblock Print Portfolio. I personally do not know a great deal about this portfolio. I am told this is a rare example. The portfolio appears to have very good and legitimate age to it and I believe would conservatively date 100 years old, if not older. I am told the woodblocks are signed Utagawa Hiroshige and include 53 Stations of Tokaido with notations. The cover is lined with silk with Japanese script to the outside. The outer edges of the book show some wear and rubbing. The 53 woodblock prints themselves are all in very fine original condition with no damage. The book measures 9 5/8 inches wide, by 6 3/4 inches long, and 1 1/2 inches thick. The woodblocks themselves measure 8 1/2 inches long, by 5 3/4 inches wide. PLEASE REVIEW PAYMENT AND RETURN POLICIES PRIOR TO BIDDING. BEST OF LUCK WITH THE AUCTIONS! Mark your calendars this auction ends the Evening of Wednesday March 4th. Shipping: We happily combine items when shipping. Saving you costs. You will be happy to know we never charge a handling fee or extra for shipping supplies and professional packaging. ANTIQUE JAPANESE PRINTS HIROSHIGE - EISEN SIXTY-NINE STATIONS OF THE KISOKAIDO
Hiroshige/ Eisen. The Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaido” By Sebastian Izzard. Published by George Braziller in 2008. DISCUSSION: In mid-1830s Japan. Keisai Eisen was famous for his ribald writings and his lively woodblock prints. He was the natural choice to produce an expensive series of prints illustrating the Kisokaido, a highway from Edo to Kyoto, whose 69 post stations provided accommodation, refreshment, and entertainment, as well as uproarious tales of the road. Eisen's restless spirit apparently tired of the enormous project, however, and after the 24th image the prints were produced by the supreme landscape artist Utagawa Hiroshige, whose scenes contained more of the natural grandeur of the Kisokaido, and who produced some of his finest art for this project. The mixture of their work resulted in a striking portrait of daily ... morelife in 19th-century Japan. Reproduced from the finest surviving edition of the original manuscript, this book offers 70 superbly reproduced plates(11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches) that teem with lyrical scenes and unique characters, from beggars and brawling men to naked porters and finely clothed women; the gentle humor of both artists imbues them all with remarkable vitality. Japanese print scholar and curator Sebastian Izzard comments on each image, offering insights into the artists' processes and the evolution of their collective masterwork, which changed in later printings with the wear or altering of the woodblocks” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 14”x10” 159 pages, 71 color plates, dust jacket. ABOUT HIROSHIGE Hiroshige was born in old Edo(present-day Tokyo) in 1797. During the latter part of the Edo period(1603-1868) He was the son of Andou ... moreGen'emon, a fire watchman in the famed Edo Fire Brigade. His childhood name, Tokutaro, was changed to Juemon upon reaching adulthood, and changed again when he was fifty to Tokubei. Hiroshige was his"studio surname" bestowed upon him by his painting master Toyohiro when young Hiroshige was fifteen and had just entered his master's school. Hiroshige was orphaned in his twelfth year and succeeded to his father's post as fireman, studying painting all the while. For fourteen years, until he was twenty-six, he was both fireman and painting apprentice. In 1823, he gave up his fire brigade duties, passing them on to his brother Nakajiro, and devoted himself full time to painting. At the age of eleven he produced a picture, Ryukyuans in Edo which attracted attention. He aspired to enter the studio of the noted actor-portrait painter Toyokuni. But there were no vacancies in that currently fashionable school and Hiroshige had to be satisfied with studying at the studio of the less famous, less sought-after, Toyohiro. This turned out to be fortunate; had he studied under Toyokuni, he undoubtedly would have become just another portrait painter. Studying under the more

HIROSHIGE Japanese Woodblock Print BUNTING ON BLOSSOMING CHERRY ANDO HIROSHIGE Pear Flowers and a Bunting Date: c. late 1920s; published by Hasegawa/Nishinomiya; listed as number 646 in the 1930 Hasegawa catalog Size: approx. 4" x 11" Condition: VG. Uncirculated print, never framed Impression: VG. Excellent registration, solid key lines, and surface texture Color: Fine. Deep saturated color and bleed through to verso Provenance: from the Collection of Robert O. Muller(see below for more information) A Japanese bunting perched on a branch of a blossoming pear tree. WHO WAS ROBERT O. MULLER? Robert O. Muller’s love affair with Japanese prints began one day in the 1930s. When as a student in New York City he spotted a Hasui in a gallery window, and immediately arranged to purchase the print. As a newly wed in 1940 he went on a print ... moreshopping tour to Japan with his wife where he met the shin hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo and Watanabe’s stable of artists including: Kawase Hasui, Shiro Kasamatsu, and Ito Shinsui. He also met and befriended Hiroshi Yoshida. After WWII. Muller continued to deal in Japanese prints, but he was also an avid collector with a keen eye for good art. Although the Muller Collection is best known for shin hanga, Mr. Muller also collected late nineteenth century prints and good reproductions of famous Edo masters. When Mr. Muller passed away on April 10. 2003, he had left possibly the largest and finest collection of 20th century Japanese prints in the world, and the question of what would become of his notorious collection was a major topic among Japanese print collectors. The finest 20th century prints from his collection were given as a gift to the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. and an exhibit was mounted. Other portions of the collection were sold at auction and still more remains with his heirs. Several books have been published about the collection. HIROSHIGE Japanese Woodblock Print KAMEIDO DRUM BRIDGE 1856
HIROSHIGE Japanese Woodblock Print KAMEIDO DRUM BRIDGE 1856 ANDO HIROSHIGE Inside Kameido Tenjin Shrine Number 65 from the series 100 Views of Edo Date: originally published in 7/1856. This is a Showa era print made from recarved blocks Size: oban. Approx. 10.5" x 15.5" Condition: Very good. Minor thinning in margin on verso, otherwise fine Impression: Fine. Tight registration, solid key lines, good surface texture Color: Fine. Deep saturated color and bleed through to verso Documentation: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Brazillier. 1986, print 65 KAMEIDO TENJIN WAS DEDICATED IN THE EARLY 1660s as one part of the campaign to open the east bank of the Sumida for urban settlement in the wake of the devastating fire of 1657. The shrine was located in the northeast corner of the planned area in order to protect the new development from ... moreevil spirits. The dedication to Tenjin. The deified Sugawara Michizane, patron saint of learning and calligraphy, is said to have been inspired by the personal veneration of the shogun Ietsuna, and the shrine always enjoyed strong bakufu support. The view here is pure scenery with not a shrine building in sight. The arched bridge was one of two such famous taikobashi(drum bridge" After its rounded shape) in Edo, this one in wood, the other in stone. The Kameido drum bridge is actually a pair of bridges on the approach to the shrine. First the"male bridge" then the slightly smaller"female bridge" Hiroshige has depicted the"male bridge" from the east. He has exaggerated the height of the bridge above the pond, but not its steepness, which one can sense from the figures clinging to the railing as they descend on the right. ORIGINAL XIX c. HIROSHIGE Ukiyo-e japanese woodblock print SUSHIKI Poetry Edo
You are bidding on ORIGINAL XIX c. Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock print of ANDO HIROSHIGE showing woman poet SUSHIKI and her haiku. Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige(歌川 広重. 1797– October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andō Hiroshige(安藤 広重) an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyūsai Hiroshige(一幽斎廣重) Hiroshige was born in 1797 and named"Andō Tokutarō" 安藤 徳太郎) in the Yayosu barracks. Just east of Edo Castle in the Yaesu area of Edo(present-day Tokyo) His father was Andō Gen'emon, a hereditary retainer(of the dōshin rank) of the shōgun. An official within the fire-fighting organization whose duty was to protect Edo Castle from fire, Gen'emon and his family, along with 30 other samurai, lived in one of the ... more10 barracks; although their salary of 60 koku marked them as a minor family, it was a stable position, and a very easy one— Professor Seiichiro Takahashi characterizes a fireman's duties as largely consisting of revelry.2] The 30 samurai officials of a barracks, including Gen'emon, oversaw the efforts of the 300 lower-class workers who also lived within the barracks. A few scraps of evidence indicate he was tutored by another fireman who taught him in the Chinese-influenced Kanō school of painting. Legend has it that Hiroshige determined to become a ukiyo-e artist when he saw the prints of his near-contemporary. Hokusai. Hokusai published some of his greatest prints, such as Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, in 1832—the year Hiroshige devoted himself full-time to his art. From then to Hokusai's death in 1849, their landscape works competed for the same customers. More likely though, like many other low-ranked samurai, Hiroshige's salary was insufficient for his needs, and this motivated him to look into artisanal crafts to supplement his income. It was easy to balance his job and his artistic pursuits, as a fireman was only intermittently busy. His natural inclinat

The Sumida river was open to evening use by pleasure boats, a custom known as"taking in the cool of the evening. The center of activity was Rogoku Bridge, where an endless variety of entertainment was offered on both ... moreland and water. For the true connoisseur of the evening cool, the place to be was not in the crowded stalls of the bridgehead plazas, but rather in one of the restaurants of Yanagibashi, a bit north of the bridge on the west side, or in an individually chartered plesure boat on the river itself. The view that Hiroshige offers here is to the southeast from Yanagibashi. Implying the viewpoint of the elegant restaurants that traditionally cosponsored the major firework displays together with the boathouses. On the river below, we see several types of pleasure boats. The large boat in the center is a"palace boat. Up to fifty feet in length, with an interior space of as many as twenty tatami mats, these boats were hired out for parties by rich merchants. Next down in size and most numerous in this view are th familiar"roof boats. Smallest are the uncovered chokibune. The basic taxis of the Sumida. ANTIQUE JAPANESE BIRD & FLOWER PRINTS BY HIROSHIGE Ukiyo-e
Hiroshige. Birds and Flowers” By Cynthea J. Bogel& Israel Goldman. Published by George Braziller. In association with the Rhode Island School of Design, in 1988. DISCUSSION: Shunning the popular tradition of courtesan subjects in the 1830s. Uncirculated print, never framed Impression: Fine. Tight registration, solid key lines and good surface texture Color: Fine. Deep saturated color and bleed through to verso Provenance: from the Robert O. Muller estate TRADITION HAS IT THAT SEBA, or"Washing Horse" Got its name when the retainers of Kiso Yoshinaka(1154-1184) washed his horse in the clear water of the Ohta river. The round moon beyond the willows is casting a pale ... morelight on the surface of the river, on which a sampan is moving soundlessly. This is considered one of the best works in the Kiso Highway Series. And it is also one of Hiroshige's masterpieces. WHO WAS ROBERT O. MULLER? Robert O. Muller’s love affair with Japanese prints began one day in the 1930s. When as a student in New York City he spotted a Hasui in a gallery window, and immediately arranged to purchase the print. Later, as a newly wed in 1940 he went on a print shopping tour to Japan with his wife where he met the shin hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo and Watanabe’s stable of artists including: Kawase Hasui. Shiro Kasamatsu, and Ito Shinsui. When Mr. Muller passed away on April 10. 2003, he had left possibly the largest and finest collection of 20th century Japanese prints in the world, and the question of what would become of his notorious col
