This bowl with flared rim dates to the 16th- early 17th century of the Wanli reign(1572-1620) It is quite heavily-potted and decorated in underglaze blue with a scrolling floral pattern around the outer wall and an unglazed circle around the glazed inner center. With blue bands encircling the inner surface. Iron-brown glaze has been applied around the rim edge and foot to prevent fritting of the glaze during firing. There are the usual kiln firing imperfections common to provincial wares. The diameter: 6 inches and Height 2 1/4 inches. Underglaze decoration: Decorationpainted on the body of a ceramic ware before glazing after which it becomescovered by glaze. The most common colors used on pottery and porcelain aremetallic oxides of iron. Cobalt(qinghua) and copper. These items were procured from a dealer in the city of Qingdao southeast of Beijing. They belonged to mostly farmers in the rural countryside outside of Qingdao. It is no longer possible to purchase early pieces for export anymore since China has emerged as an economic power. The Chinese are conserving their antiquities and restricting export. Ironically, they are purchasing many of their antiques here in the U.S. to bring back to China. I had the pieces examined by a dealer in Chicago, Tom O’Hara, a well respected dealer and collector with a good reputation. He stated that the pieces were authentic and were above average quality since he had seen many examples of Song, Yuan and Ming provincial pieces in New York. I was told the Mirror is an Authentic Ming Dynasty piece, and is did come out a collection with many other very fine and authentic period pieces. However seeing I am not positive myself I will let you ultimately decide it age for yourself and bid accordingly. The Mirror shows good and legitimate age with a rich green patina throughout the Bronze. The Mirror has a unique design with scrolling lotus. The Mirror shows wear, but is overall in fine original condition with no damage or repairs. The Mirror measures 8-1/4 inches across. A Fine and Interesting piece. This auction ends the evening of Wednesday Feb 27th Up for auction is a Very Rare 16th Century Chinese Ming Dynasty Longquan Celadon Glazed Tripod Censer Bowl. The Censer is a Fine and Authentic 16th Century Ming Dynasty example. The Censer has a beautiful and consistent green longquan celadon crackle glaze throughout. The Censer is also nicely carved decorated all around with period lotus designs. The Censer could use a cleaning to the interior and has some wear to the glaze as should be found on a legitimate example of this early age. The Censer has some original chips to the unglazed base from when it was taken out of the kiln. Which is very commonly found on authentic period pieces like this and not really considered damage at all. Overall for its very early age the Censer is in very fine untouched original condition with no other chips, cracks, or repairs. The Censer is also a nice Large size period piece measuring 9 inches wide, and sits 3 3/4 inches tall. Underglaze Blue Porcelain is the best known type of Asian Ceramic Art. It is often referred to as'Blue and White' because of its blue cobalt oxide painted on a white clay body below the clear glaze. Blue and White Porcelain first appeared during the Yuan dynasty(1279- 1368) but became so pervasive during the Ming dynasty(1368- 1644) that today'Blue and White' and Ming are commonly used interchangeably. The rare motif of a flying-fish dragon(feiyu) appears to have been used only briefly. During the early of the Ming period.Its appearance may be related to the tightening of Ming regulations regarding what types of dragons and how many claws different categories of officials and other groups at court were permitted to use. Another decree was issued in the year 1447 by emperor Zhengtong(1436-1449) which prohibited the production of color glaze such as yellow,purple, red or blue glazes including those with underglazed blue design. The Plaque is very finely and ... moreintricacy hand carved throughout. I was told the plaque itself would date from the later Ming Dynasty period.Which I believe to be a correct dating although there is the possibility it could even be an earlier piece. The Jade itself has a beautify tone and a fine Ming period softness to the jade itself from many years of handling. The Plaque has two qilin dragons with intricately carved heads. The Dragons features are deeply carved with the heads carved in three dimensions, showing its great period qualities. The Plaque also came from the estate with this very finely carved wood display stand, which was most likely carved some time in the 20th century to display the plaque nicely. The Stand has a great wave carved design, along with an old collection serial number to the base. The stand shows its age with some wear throughout. But overall the stand and jade plaque are in very fine original condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or damages of any king. The Plaque itself measures 3 inches long, by 2 3/8 inches wide, and ¾s of an inch thick. The Plaque on its stand measures 5 inches tall. Charming Ming Dynasty Blue & White Bowl
This attractive Ming dynasty bowl was made during the transitional period of the Chongzhen(1627-1644) reign. The bowl is decorated on the outer wall in underglaze blue with a stylized floral motif and a wave pattern boarder under the rim. There are 2 blue bands encircling the outer wall near the foot. Within the base is stuck kiln grit. As is often the case with this type of Swatow-wear. There is some surface wear and minor firing faults to the rim. The inside of the bowl features a single floral motif in the center encircled by two blue bands and another near the top of the rim. There is a single hairline crack running vertically from the rim, clearly visible as it has become stained due to long burial. There are no damages,repairs or restoration. In fine condition. The diameter is 4 ½ inches andheight 2 inches. Crackled: Anetwork of ... moreirregular cracks in the glaze caused by a disagreement in the rateof shrinkage between body and glaze during cooling. From the Song dynasty andonwards crackles seems to have been intentionally produced as decoration. Theappearance could be enhanced by tea(red) or ink(black) being rubbed into thecracks. Crackle decoration is to be found on such Sung dynasty wares as Ru.Guan, and Ge, or on archaizing wares made later, up until today. Traditionallythe Chinese connoisseurs have been distinguishing between a large, bold,crackle, termed"crab's claw" and a much closer and smaller networktermed"fish roe" crackle. The former developed first, and wasaccentuated with black pigment: the latter, developing at a later stage, wascolored red. On Ge ware sometimes a combination of both are found. Crazing ofthe glaze of some excavated wares might not be intentional, but the result ofburial. Crackled porcelain typically also occurs as a defect when the ceramicpiece is not fired at high enough temperature, but remains somewhat soft. The Figure has a great and very ... moreinteresting period design. The Figure is Fully Guaranteed to be Authentic Jade. And an Authentic period example, so please bid with Full Confidence. I have seen some similar figures like this in high end auction catalogues, but this is the first one of this quality I have personally sold. The Figure has one of the most interesting Chinese archaic carved designs I have seen with the smaller cat wrapped around the larger cat with elongated neck, and a really interesting design. I was told the figure is more likely a later Ming than earlier Qing example, but I will let you decide for yourself. As you can see I have attached a picture of a similar example offered at Sothebys last year. However I think this example is somewhat more interesting, and this figures very light green and russet jade color is more desirable than the one they offered. The Figure could use a cleaning, but I would never touch anything like this. The Figure is in very fine original condition with no damage, repairs, or losses. Large Ancient Ming Dynasty charger(serving plate) of Vietnamese origin, dating to approximately 1400 AD; a sea salvaged and officially recorded piece from the famous Hoi-An Shipwreck. The charger is of robust form. With ring base, flaring walls and thick, collared rim. The interior of the piece is decorated with two songbirds perched on a flowering branch, painted in blue on white with added enamel work in places. Adorned with four roundels depicting four-clawed Principal Celestial Long Dragons chasing the flaming pearl, within clouds with a recurrent pattern of Precious Things(Babao) including flaming pearls, Pair of Books and Pair of Rhinoceros Horns. All patterned in multicolored silk, richly woven in gold against a Dark blue background. Since this Brocade silk woven with gold is very shiny we weren’t able to take proper photographs, the pictures don’t justify the extremely high quality and rich colors of this fabric, which in fact, looks much better, showing brighter, richer colors and ... morefiner details. This particular Damask Silk is a master piece of Chinese art. Heavily woven in gold and with the four-Clawed Dragons which was typically strictly reserved for imperial nobility and high-ranking officials. It was an expensive luxury fabric, most likely made during the 17th century. Similar types of Chinese Silk brocades dating to the 16th-17th century are published in the book"Silks for Thrones and Altars" by Myrna Myers, dated to the Ming and early Qing Dynasty. However to be safe we are dating this panel to the 17th-18th century. This Rare Chinese Silk Brocade came from an old Canadian collection of Oriental Art.
