ANTIQUE JAPANESE INRO - COLLECTING LACQUER CASES & NETSUKE FROM JAPAN
The Inro Handbook. Studies of Netsuke. Inro and Lacquer” By Raymond Bushell. Published in New York by Weatherhill in 2002. 3rd printing. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: For collectors who have discovered the delights of such miniature Japanese art forms as the inro and the netsuke. This authoritative and enlightening book offers a wealth of valuable information. That it also affords entry to a world of fascinating design and superb craftsmanship goes without saying. In addition to illustrating in color and discussing in detail 108 distinguished inro and their accompanying netsuke, as well as 18 related miniature objects, it presents highly informative essays on the making of inro, on pearl shell inlays, and, in particular on the materials and techniques of lacquer art. It is refreshing to have an author tell his readers ... morenot only what his book is but also what it is not. In his introduction Bushell says: This book is addressed to the collector of inro. Netsuke, and other forms of miniature Japanese art, with emphasis on works in lacquer. Its purpose is specific and limited. It is not a comprehensive study of lacquer. It is not a historical survey, a technical analysis, a comparative examination, or a compendium of terms and definitions. In point of time it is limited to the Tokugawa, Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods. In point of craft it is limited to the later development of precise and sophisticated techniques, with their brilliant decorative effects. Bushell points out that he is not making an unnecessary emotional appeal in praise of lacquer. His objective is far more practical. This book is the product of his efforts to understand the structure underlying the beauty of lacquer art and to provide clear and simple explanations. Because other books on the subject had not satisfied him. He undertook his own basic research, and here he presents the information he acquired through painstaking study with master lacquer craftsmen and other authorities. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover.

ANTIQUE JAPANESE LACQUER -HISTORY, CARE & PRESERVATION - MAZARIN CHEST & OTHERS
East Asian Lacquer: Material Culture. Science and Conservation” Edited by Shayne Rivers. Rupert Faulkner& Boris Pretzel. Published in London by Archtype Publications in association with the Victoria& Albert Museum. In 2011. DISCUSSION: A key consequence of the western discovery of sixteenth-century Japan was the emergence of workshops producing lacquerware for the European market. As with East Asian porcelain. Japanese lacquer quickly became an absolute must-have, its gold-on-black pictorial schemes enriching the sumptuous interiors of the aristocratic and wealthy. The Mazarin Chest, which was made in Kyoto in the late 1630s to early 1640s and has belonged to the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1882, is the largest and most spectacular survivor of this specialist industry. Since 2003 it has been the focus of a major research and ... moreconservation project involving curators, conservators and scientists in the UK, Germany, Japan and Poland. The main outcomes of this and related research, initially presented at an international conference held at the V&A, are published in this discipline-defining compilation of twenty-one papers. The recognition, acceptance and negotiation of cultural differences have been core concerns of the Mazarin Chest Project. Antique Asian Lacquer Japanese Walking Stick Samurai Huge Bamboo Rare Must See!
Where to begin? This walking stick? has been on my mind for months. I can find nothing like it. 40 Inches Long and just shy of 13 inches around at the widest part. It is unique! Ornate carvings of what appear to be samurai(2) and the typical carved mushroom flower ribs at the top adorn this piece of bamboo? It would be the largest piece I have ever come across. The carving is amazing to me! The facial expressions and the armor is awesome. The burn patterns add to the piece. There are cracks in the piece. Please see the pictures. I have tried to give you the best idea of what I have to offer here. I can take a send more pictures if there is something I need to look for. I see no signature or markings of an artist. Questions are welcome. Comments will be entertained as well. I am not an expert and have no idea what this was used for. This items ... morewas purchased with many canes. The former owner had it for years and had no history other than it was probably purchased at an auction he attended years ago.

Please know that items purchased from us will be shipped direct from California. Your item will arrive much sooner and the shipping cost will be far less than items being shipped direct from Japan. Take advantage of our combined shipping to save even more! DETAILS OF ITEM. This piece measures about 6 inches in diameter. This is a lacquer plate decorated with a Kamakura bori carving that depicts the famous monk Daruma. The historical Bodhidharma(Daruma in Japanese) is originally an Indian sage who lived sometime in the fifth or sixth century and is credited as the founding father of Zen Buddhism. One of the most popular talismans of good luck in modern Japan is the Daruma doll often portrayed as a stylized ... moreround tumble doll shape depicting Bodhidharma without limbs like this particular piece. Originally Kamakura bori carvings began in the Kamakura period(1192-1333) Kamakura was then a flourished Japanese capital and an important center of politics and culture in Japan. During this time. Many Sung Dynasty(960-1275) style items were imported from China and Japanese traditional Buddhism arts technique were blended into the Sung style that were especially influenced by Tsuishu. Tsuishu is a relief-like woodcarving elaborately coated with red Urushi lacquer. These objects were mainly seen on altar fittings for Buddhist temples. During the Momoyama(1578-1602) and the Edo(1603-1867) periods. Kamakura bori products became popular with the nobility and the ruling military class through the medium of the tea ceremony. Kamakura bori was maintained by adapting their techniques to the production of objects more suited to a contemporary lifestyle such as this piece. The combination of the stylized Daruma and the shape of the round plate is both very sophisticated and eye catching. The condition of this piece is very good and its age is from the 1950's. Japanese Sambosa Dancer Doll lacquer base rising sun cape bells flying crane
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Japanese Sambosa Dancer Doll COMPOSITION: Wood. Straw, paper, gofun, silk brocade textile, brass bells TEXTILE MOTIFS: Pine tree. Flying crane, cherry blossum, rising run CIRCA: Late 19th/Early 20th Century ORIGIN: Unknown. possibly Kyoto SIZE: Approximately 13" including lacquer base which is 2" in height) CONDITION: Good but needs restoration work. As stated in the detail of defects above. This Sambosa dancer doll is not now in its correct position; somehow it has rotated on its central support, and the leg is displaced from the foot on the base, which is the original position. This is the primary defect. Otherwise, there is a hairline crack on the neck, and there are some minor imperfections on the left hand that is holding the cord w/tassels. When I acquired the doll, it appeared to be sitting on the base; ... morehowever, after considerable research, I was able to determine what type of doll it is-Sambosa dancer doll-and with that information have been able to see other similar dolls and how they are positioned for display. Because the doll has been"seated" on the base, the costume was compressed, but when it is repaired and the figure is secured upright, the clothing will drape or fall properly. The doll is being sold as-is, and no returns will be allowed unless there is a gross error in the listing description. I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns a potential buyer has and, upon request, additional photographs can be provided. Please ask questions prior to bidding. The doll will be shipped via priority mail or priority mail international w/insurance and signature confirmation. I charge only actual costs of shipping which varies and is calculated by location; please wait for final invoice.

Wonderful Japanese Wood Lacquer Kodansu (Miniature Cabinet) Box Inlayed MOP
Wonderful Japanese Wood Lacquer Kodansu(Miniature Cabinet) Box Inlayed with Mother of Pearl. This is a stunning Japanese Kodansu(miniature cabinet/ chest used for holding personal accessories or belongings) which is finely lacquered and inlayed with iridescent mother of pearl shell floral& tree design. The mother of pearl is applied to each side of the box and the top. The box has three drawers that pull out. The drawers and top of box have hardware of brass with silver rosette backing. The inside of each drawer. As well as the bottom of the drawers, box and feet are all decorated in gold Maki-e, the Japanese technique of sprinkling gold or silver powder on freshly applied lacquer. The front of the box has a rising sliding door of glass that reveals the three drawers, which is a replacement door. It would originally have been a lacquer ... moredoor decorated just as the sides. Obviously the door was lost or damaged at some point and the glass used as replacement and protection of the drawers. The drawer fronts are all decorated with the inlay mother of pearl as well. The kodansu has four wooden feet which show wear to their bottoms. There is also a bit of lacquer damage to edge of one foot, shown in last photo. The lacquer has a beautiful gloss finish with a few areas of pitting here and there. There are also a few areas where the mop is missing, very small and hard to find unless carefully inspected. I find the box to be in wonderful condition considering it is from the 19th century. The kodansu is 7 3/8" tall, 5 3/ wide and 5 1/4" deep. A find piece of late Meiji Period history. Please be aware my photos are considered part of the listing description and the description is based on my own knowledge. Experience, and research. Statements regarding maker, age, origin, etc. particularly on unmarked pieces, should be evaluated and confirmed by you the buyer, as you are the final judge. Which is related to poison oak and ivy) It has been used for over six thousand years in Japan to coat all types of things, from wood to baskets to leather to pottery. Lacquer-coated pots and wooden items have been found in Japanese Neolithic sites carbon dated to about 4500 B.C. And lacquer coated objects that have been in ocean depths for 18 months, or more, have retained their integrity. Far more protective and long lasting than Western lacquer(a petrochemical creation) natural Japanese lacquer has a complex organic structure which lasts and lasts, repelling liquids and heat. Many steps are taken to refine and prepare the lacquer, and even more intricate steps are taken to create/coat/decorate exquisite objects. This beautiful box is a superb example of this historic art. ANTIQUE JAPANESE NETSUKE BOY WITH CRICKET 19TH CENTURY RED LACQUER SIGNATURE
Fine Japanese Netsuke of Boy and Cricket This charming Japanese netsuke dates from the 19th century and was once part of the Crane family collection. I was able to buy some of the Japanese things from this collection. Put together by members of this famous American family, makers of high quality paper since the before the American revolution. They still make the paper for the US MInt. The little boy has apparently released his cricket from under the woven basket that his left hand now leans on. There is a red lacquer signature plaque on the base. Bearing one Japanese character. An old repair shows clearly on my photos. At one time the left hand, basket and the leaf that joins basket and knee were broken away.they have been repaired and reglued well, but a better job could certainly be done. LENGTH 1 3/16 inches( 3.1 cm) HEIGHT 1 1/8 inches( ... more2.7 cm) I sell most of my items on eBay with a reasonable reserve. Often at my cost, and always less than what I would expect the item to sell for. Very careful packaging is part of my shipping cost to anywhere in the continental USA or elsewhere. Antique Japanese Kogai not a Netsuke Ojime or Inro. Lacquer piece Meiji jewellry
Here is delightful little find. I collect Japanese Inro and couldn't resist the fantastic gold lacquer painting on this tiny thing. It is a real pleasure to handle and study. Could be converted to an Ojime easily. I'm almost certain that is a top locking piece from a kogai hair-pin. Reminds me of an Ojime or netsuke and would sit well in a collection of such items. A great example of the lacquer craftsman's skill. This piece is tiny. Minor surface wear and patination commensurate with age. Tiny grey speckles visible on the photos are part of the foliage. Not damage. Depicting birds and foliage. Period: Meiji. 31mm x 11mm(slightly tapering form) Questions welcome. Please see my signed Meiji miniature Inro listed this week.

Please know that items purchased from us will be shipped direct from California. Your item will arrive much sooner and the shipping cost will be far less than items being shipped direct from Japan. The entire signboard is made of wood and the frame is finished with black lacquer and the four ornate metal corners are made of brass. The design of this piece is a treasure ship and the large stylized letters in the background finished with vivid red lacquer reads"Oiri" meaning a prayer for a full house. The raised red lacquer finish gleams with ... morethe energetic stroke movements making this signboard a truly eye catching work of art. The sign board like this piece is often given to the owner of newly open business or a shop as a gift with the prayer that the business will be full of customers. These sign boards are then often hung near the entrance of the establishment until the last day when the business finally closes. The inscription on the center of the frame reads"Gift" and the right side reads"from Pachinko Yuraku" and the left side reads"to Wakagiya. Pachinko is a mechanical game originally created as a recreational arcade game for kids in the 1920’s but later became a very popular gambling device for adults around the 1940’s. The nature of the business of Wakagiya is unknown. The inscription on the blue paper label on the lower left corner reads" Matsuzawa. Renjyaku, Sumitaya" and this is probably the name of the shop who made this signboard. Matsuzawa and Renjyaku is the name of the cities in Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan which may help to pinpoint from where in Japan this piece originated. The sail of the treasure ship is filled with a strong mythical wind as it approaches a p

Japanese oxblood ground lacquer card case
Elegant Japanese lacquer card case This elegant little card case was made in Japan towards the end of the 19th century. It is made of lacquer with an oxblood ground and decorated with hiramaki-e decoration: bamboo and flowers on one side and three roundels with script on the other. It has a slip-top lid and the inner slip is lacquered to simulate bamboo. Most Japanese lacquer card cases were made for ladies. But this case measures 43 x 87 x 8mm and was most likely made for a gentleman(since gentleman's card cases were always smaller than those for ladies) It's in very good condition; the lacquer is glossy and the hirmaki-e has only light wear. There is a very light surface scratch on the reverse which can be seen under a raking light(to the right of the top roundel) the inner bevel is also split down one side(see final image) Shipping ... moreUK shipping costs are provided. I have also provided indicative costs for overseas shipping. But please contact me for more accurate costs. Insured shipping costs will also vary depending on the final auction price. Please note. I obtain proof of posting for all items. If you decide to have the item shipped without insurance/tracking, I cannot be responsible if the item is lost or damaged; in these circumstances. I won't be able to provide a refund/compensation. For your peace of mind. I recommend you pay for insured/tracked shipping. I am listing other card cases and will combine postage.

Vtg Japanese Hand Painted Lacquer Musical Jewellery Box Mother Of Pearl Inlay Welcome to my listing for this lovely Japanese Jewelery box. Hand painted with the classic Mount Fuji scene. The whole box is lacquered and the lid features a mother of pearl inlaid border. Inside of the box features a lovely pair of dancing ballerinas who spin around to what sounds like a lovely Japanese tune. I cant identify it. The box inner is lined with a lovely pink fabric which is in lovely, bright condition. The multiple mirror effect is a beautiful touch and in excellent condition. Each of the ballerina's look like they may have been glued back into place at some point. They seem sturdy now, please see pics. Both ballerinas spin and the music plays well when the box is opened. All works as it should. There is a little wear to the lid and part of the ... morepaintwork. On the whole, this is in Excellent condition. The box comes with its original key.
