A Tachi Koshirae with Tokugawa Kamon (Family Crest) Katana
Type: Katana(Mumei. Unsigned) Item No. ujka009 Swordsmith: Unknown Period: Early to Mid Muromachi(~1450-1500AD) Length: 65.7cm Curvature: 2cm Mekugi: 2 Hamon: Midare-ba(wild) Included: superb tachi mountings. Silk brocade carry bag, Description: This is a wonderful tachi reproduction koshirae(mounting) that was made in the late 1800’s. To early 1900s just after the Meji Restoration(1868) Notice the menuki(eyelets) features the hollyhock kamon(crest) of the Shogunate Tokugawa family of the Edo period. The Tokugawa family may have owned this sword. Although it cannot be confirmed. The blade that goes with it is an early to mid-Muromachi piece(about 500 years old) that comes in its own shirasaya(scabbard) Protocol dictated that the sword remained in the shirasaya at night. And for daytime use the Samurai would place the sword into it’s tachi ... moremountings. A shirasaya scabbard(made from magnolia wood) helps to maintain proper humidity for the sword so as to help prevent it from developing any corrosion. This is especially important at night when temperatures can drop significantly thus producing extra condensation on the blade. The blade is 65.7cm long. And very curvy and incredibly light– at one point this sword would have been well more than 70cm long. Over time, this sword was shortened to match the fighting times of the period. This is likely the reason we don’t see a signature. As the sword was shortened, the original signature went with it. Traditionally tachi swords were the long swords used by armored Samurai on horseback. They were carried loosely suspended from the belt by two cords or chains attached to metal bands encircling the scabbard about 20cm apart at the point of balance. On display. This sword is most definitely impressive. Fantastically decorative. The dark tones of the blade’s body are a real sight to behold. The midare-ba hamon really looks sensational in contrast to it. For auction is this fine antique Japanese wakizashi sword set. The 17th century blade is a real beauty. The japanese polish is high quality and mint condition, completely damage free clean blade with very sharp edge, also flawless with only a couple of very minor usual kizu above the shinogi line(ridge) nothing on the cutting surface. The temperline is Sanbonsugi hamon. A very fine pattern developed in the 16th century by Kanemoto. The activities are truly fantastic with fully packed activities. Lot of Nie crystals, Sunagashi, Inazuma, elegant peaks and valleysm very dense and flamboyant temperline that is very scarce and desirable and hard to find, especialy on a minty blade. The grain work is also very good and healthy. Not overpolished blade, the tip is elegant with a fine clearly visible boshi also full of nice activities and shape. The ... moretang has 2 holes and unsigned with nice patination. Although it is unsigned there is sayagaki in the shirasaya. A judgment by the master polisher. Although I did not have time to have it translated fully it is clear that it states the blade was made by Katsukuni. The Katsukuni smiths were well known for being skilled at creating the famous sanbonsugi hamon. The Edo koshirae is great. The old saya has kaeritsuno(horn hook) too, the lacquer is good with minor dings from use. The double copper habaki in nicely filed and heavily gold washed. The copper tsuba has nice open theme and the rim is gold washed also. The tsuka has good old rayskin and tight ito. Finely detailed inlayed copper menukies in the shape of bulls, good iron fuchi and kashira also. Nothing rattles. Very nice sword. It also comes with copy of japanese registration card along with the shirasaya set too. Highly recommended sword made to high standard. Blade has sign named?Izumi kami Kuniyoshi- Authenticity of the name is unknown since there is no certification. Blade is already polished and has aged wound a little but it keeps good condition. Hada and Ha(temper) keeps fantastic appearance. It has partial Bo-hi on both side. And add it has wonderful aged Koshirae. Patterned saya has aged wound and has rest of repair on pasting part. Habaki is made by aged double styled. Blade is 67cm in full length. Temper part 52.4cm. Koshirae is 76.3cm in full length.
