I am offering it for sale here on eBay for you. It comes with an iron trivet stand that sits on 3 feet and measures 5-1/4" in diameter. The pot has hobnail bumps on it and is finely crafted with a bale handle. The lid fits snug with a vent hole in the top and an easy to grab finial handle. The pot measures about 5-1/2" in diameter and 3" tall plus the lid and handle, so overall with the handle up it measures 5-3/4" tall. The pot and stand combined weigh just under 4 pounds. This is a black cast iron tea pot with cups and trivet. The set is unused and comes with original box/packing. There is no information on the items or box of what brand. Etc. It looks to be a Japanese Tetsubin tea pot with a hobnail design and very solid. I have not taken the plastic band off the original packing but I'm going to assume that there is a mesh strainer inside as other cast iron tea pots show. For scale purposes the tea pot is approx. 3" in diameter on the bottom rim(it gets bigger as it goes up- the largest diameter is the middle of pot and is approx. 6" and is 3 1/2" from top to bottom(not including handle) The original box is 12 1/2" long, 8" wide and 4 3/4" in height. This is one of two iron sake heating pots(Choshi) we are selling. They came together as a pair inside the box shown in the last three photos# 10. 11& 12. We are selling them individually because most people only want one. If they are sold together they will come with their original box. We guesstimate their age to be from the late 1800's to the very early 1900's. When Japan was just starting to industrialize. Under each tea pot inside their box was a paper from the shop that sold them. Photo# 10& 11. They were a very modern shop that sold their items internationally, or so they said. But they did have a phone and their phone number was 2117. There was no area code, so there were less than 10,000 phones in Japan at this time. The tea pot is all iron with a lacquered wood lid. There is a very beautifully detailed shishi lion ... moredog on one side of the tea pot. Photos 2. 3& 4 show a close up detail of it. The tea pot is 4 inches tall(10 cm) without the handle and 5 1/2 inches wide(14 cm) without including the spout which is 2 1/2 inches long( 6 cm) It weighes a little over 2 pounds(96 kilo) and is in very good condition with no cracks or holes. Historically during the mid 19th century as infused tea drinking became more popular in Japan. Tetsubin cast iron tea pot evolved from being a kitchen item to being a status symbol used to serve tea. Does have a few harmless small rust spots. These were generally used for boiling water. Although this one smells of clean smoky tea inside. This Japanese teapot(sometimes referred to as a kyusu) is constructed of brown finished heavy cast iron in a raised cherry(also known as"sakura" blossom pattern over a vertical line design. With an enameled interior. It has a handled lid. And a useful moveable handle. Comes with a well fitting and removable metal strainer basket for tea leaves. Maker's mark in kanji characters is somewhat visible but worn. As it was a estate sale find I am unsure of the teapot's exact age, but definitely vintage and of Japanese make. Teapot measures roughly 2 1/2" tall, with 4 3/4" diameter and 15" circumference at widest point. Although visually similar. The pot's strainer and presence of an enameled interior rather than one of exposed iron is what makes it a kyusu rather than a tetsubin. Kyusu are used for brewing tea ... morewhile tetsubin are primarily for boiling hot water, tetsubin also generally being larger in size. Teapot has not been cleaned. This tetsubin was purchased at an estate sale of a collector of Japanese antiques and one who collected many testsubin. The design of this tetsubin is a finely made hobnail design. It comes with a red urushi lacqured cover. There was a sales receipt inside this tetsubin from the Nikko Kanaya Hotel and it has a phone number with only 4 digits. This would indicate that it was probably purchased around the 1940s. The receipt is somewhat hard to read but I was able to read"Edo period over 100 years old" It is in quite good condition for its age. There is some rust on the inside which is common for a tea pot that has ... morebeen used. It stands on 3 feet and is 4" high from the cover and 8" high from the handle. It is 20" Upon further research I have found that these testubin with a laquered top were used to warm up sake. They put the sake bottle into the warm water in the testsubin to warm it up. One side is decorated with rising sun flags in front of the GAISEN KINEN NO MON(The Triumphant Return Gate. Aka Arc de Triomphe) And it reads MEIJI 37-8 NEN(1904-1905) and SENEKI KINEN(Battle Commemoration) The other side is decorated with what looks to be a poem and the maker's mark inside an artillery shell. But if you are a one of the rare individuals who recognize that true beauty resides in hardship and experience then I offer to you this crusty and one of a kind old iron teapot. This is the real deal. Folks! I bought this 6 years ago at an antique show in Kanazawa Japan. It’s impossible to know exactly how old this one is… the dealer who sold it to me said. Probably between 100 and 400 years old! Imagine the stories it could tell! My favorite thing about this piece is it’s simplicity… The pot is not cluttered with fancy ornamentation. Just a simple willow tree in two views on either side. True Zen… The lid is bronze and signed on ... morethe bottom. The pot is in fantastic shape for it’s age with the usual surface rust on the inside. But could be scrubbed away and used as an actual teapot again. It was mostly a display piece for me.
