Vintage Japanese Univox Model 1920 Violin Beatle Bass with Scroll Head
Up for auction is an awesome vintage Made in Japan Univox Model 1920 Violin-shaped short scale bass. This Univox Beatle bass is from about 1968-1972. It looks to be all original. It's in excellent shape cosmetically and electronically. Considering it's more than 40 years old. There are some scratches and some small chips, but nothing that affects how it plays. There is one large(but not deep) scratch near the pickup selector switch(see photo#9) and some scratches and small cracks in the bass side cutout(see photo#8) Also, the bass is missing the position marker for the Treble knob(see photo#10) It's also missing the pickguard. There are some small chips in the nut, but the strings stay seated and the bass stays in tune well. Rooster,Hen& Chicks" Kano School, c.1820 If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos This is a wonderful Japanese Hanging Scroll with a painting on silk by an unindented artist from the Kano School. The Painting is not signed or sealed. But, by its subject, style and condition, I believe it dates to the late Edo Period or around 1820. I do not think that the whole of the simple, but effective, mounting is original to the painting. The Kano school is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. It was founded by Kano Masanobu(1434-1530) A contemporary of Sesshu and student of Shubun. Kano painters often composed very flat pictures. But they balanced impeccably detailed realistic depictions of animals and other subjects in the foreground with ... moreabstract, often entirely blank, clouds and other background elements. The use of negative space to indicate distance, and to imply mist, clouds, sky or sea is drawn from traditional Chinese modes and is used beautifully by the Kano artists. Who was active in the late Meiji period. He most likely made this painting sometime around 1900 or so. I believe the mounting has been renewed. Suikyo gives us a very closely observed representation of a Tiger( Tora) Grasping the edge of a rock outcropping, intensely regarding the viewer and apparently ready to spring to the attack. Tigers are not indigenous to Japan. However these powerful cats so captivated Japanese imaginations that early artists produced innumerable paintings of them over the course of their history—most without the benefit of firsthand observations. ... moreSuikyo was working well after Japan was open to other countries in the middle of the 1800's and artists were allowed to travel and also were able to see representations of tigers from countries where they were numerous. So Suikyo's tiger looks very much like a Siberian hunting Tiger. According to traditional Asian mythology. Tigers are identified with yin. The female principle, as well as autumn and wind. The Dragon, representing yang. Is believed to create mists and rain and is associated with spring and rejuvenation. Tigers and dragons are sometimes paired together as these images represent opposite principles in nature. Bur our Tiger crouches magnificently alone. I particularly admire the composition where we see only the Tiger's head and front paws and his curling tail. Most of him is off stage. So to speak. It is almost as if his ferocious entirety could not be contained by the picture plane. This painting is a masterful depiction of strength. Power and courage. And. But judging by the subject. Style, technique and condition, I would estimate that this painting was made in the late Edo period, or around 1850. I believe the elegant mounting is original to the painting. The unknown artist has given us a lively representation of three monkeys cavorting in a pine tree. The kind of monkey portrayed is the Japanese macaque which is a terrestrial Old Wold monkey species native to Japan. C.1900, late Meiji If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos This is a magnificent Japanese Hanging Scroll with a painting on silk by the artist. Koshun, who was active int he late Meiji period. he moat likely made this painting around 1900. It could be earlier, but I do not think it is much later. I believe that the elegant mounting is original to the painting. Koshun has given us a masterful representation of a crane flying against the blazing sphere of the rising sun. Which is still partially obscured by mist. The subtle bands of mist across the sun are painted with gold metallic paint, which do not show up well in the pictures. Photo number 13 is a detail which shows the effect as well as I could capture it, ... morebut it is much better in the painting than in the photo. Fo r the Japanese. The crane( Tsuru) is considered a national treasure. Appearing in art, literature and folklore. They regard the crane as a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. And since the crane keeps the same mate for its entire life, it has also become a symbol and an augury for successful and happy union of two people. For many of these reasons, cranes figure largely as motifs for gifts and celebrations surrounding the new year, marriages, anniversaries and almost any other occasion when one would desire to express good wishes. This scroll would make an excellent gift. I particularly admire Koshun's closely observed representation of the Crane in which he manages to create a wonderful pattern of black and white with the terrific burst of color in the Crane's head. And. At least to my eye, the turning of the feathers in the Crane's left wing is a tour de force of the best kind of transubstantiation of a thing of nature into a work of art. Wonderful Japanese tea set is decorated with scroll artists. Ducks, running horses, butterflies, and a man riding a crane. One of the artist appears to have a rat on his head. At least it looks like a rat or mouse to me, but I have included a close-up. Teapot measures 6 1/2" tall to top of knob and approximately 7 1/2" across from tip of spout to outside of handle. Extensive gilding and some slightly elevated white enamel accents. All pieces are in very good condition except some minor gold wear on lid of teapot on knob and on design around knob on both in a couple of panels. This original Japanese scroll features hand-painted calligraphy on paper. With silk and fabric mounting material, and wooden roller ends. I can't tell you it's subject matter, but I believe it to be a Tea Ceremony scroll. It's exact age is also unknown, but it was probably created post-1940 and not a true antique. It is however an original and attractive piece, in excellent condition overall. This item was originally purchased from Sakura-Zipang of Japan through their Ebay store.
