ABOUT THE NIGHT SCENES SERIES The"Night Scene" series of prints published during the early 1900's by Hasegawa/Nishinomiya of Tokyo. There are 21 chuban-sized prints included in the series which is indicative of the early transitional style of shin hanga. The dominant movement in Japanese print making during the first half of the twentieth century. The artists who created designs for the series were: Koho Shoda, Eijiro Kobayashi, Yoshimune Arai, Kiyochika Kobayashi, and Gyosui Suzuki. The series is comprised of prints showing evening and night views of popular Japanese landscape tableaux often under a full moon. Variant editions employing sepia and brown tones are also known. Please for full background and contact details. A Scarce Japanese Woodblock Print by Kuniyoshi.1853 Edo Period 14 1/4 x 9 5/8 ins. 36.3 x 24.3 cms) This design is from the series Koyo nijushi sho no hitori(Twenty-Four Generals of Eastern Kai Province. One By One) portraying the general Imafuku Zenkuro Koretada strapping on his menpo(face mask) A curious aspect of the present print ... moreis that there are no date or censor seals which should be above the publisher's seal. The example in the British Museum(no.2008,3037.16805) shows the same print from the same blocks but with the seals. The present example also has a split in the block bottom left corner as does the B.M print. As our example is a very good early impression the only explanation is that it is a proof pull before the censor's seal were inserted in the block which would have been showed to the government censor's office for approval. Robinson in"Kuniyoshi; The Warrior Prints" only lists 5 from the series(S82) and does not include this design which seems to indicate it is scarce. The print has been backed. It is faded, some brown staining and some cracking of the paper here and there which is hardly apparent due to the backing sheet. Eisho NARAZAKI Japanese woodblock print $1 START very rare early Watanbe
EISHO NARAZAKI 1866-1936. Original shin-hanga Japanese woodblock print. KINGFISHER in REEDS with SNOW. Given name. Early, c. 1920. Publisher Watanabe. Signed and sealed"Fuyo" purportedly Eisho Narazaki. Excellent impression, quite detailed, very good colors with"gofun" splashing for snow with"guffrage" nice shading, laid or mounted, slight toning right edge of print. 6 5/8 x 14 5/8 inches. I believe this print to be by Ito Sozan or even Koson. Why the signature and seal"Fuyo" Seems almost generic in use. Narazaki has only 2 known prints, they seem so disparate to each other. Japan's best known artist, is ironically Japan's least Japanese artist. Japan's best known woodblock print, The Great Wave. Is very un-Japanese. Welcome to the artist often known as Hokusai. Hokusai lived during the Tokugawa period(1600 to 1867) In a Japan of traditional Confucian values and feudal regimentation. Hokusai was a thoroughly Bohemian artist: cocky, quarrelsome, restless, aggressive, and sensational. He fought with his teachers and was often thrown out of art schools. As a stubborn artistic genius, he was single-mindedly obsessed with art. Hokusai left over 30,000 works, including silk paintings, woodblock prints, picture books, manga, travel illustrations, erotic illustrations, paintings, and sketches. Some of his paintings were public spectacles which measured over 2,000 sq. feet.

Muller estate. see below for more information) A group of farmers winnow their rice on an afternoon in the countryside. WHO WAS ROBERT O. MULLER? Robert O. Muller’s love affair with Japanese prints began one day in the 1930s. When as a student in New York City he spotted a Hasui in a gallery window, and immediately arranged to purchase the print. As a newly wed in 1940 he went on a print shopping tour to Japan with his wife where he met the shin hanga publisher Watanabe ... moreShozaburo and Watanabe’s stable of artists including: Kawase Hasui. Shiro Kasamatsu, and Ito Shinsui. He also met and befriended Hiroshi Yoshida. After WWII. Muller continued to deal in Japanese prints, but he was also an avid collector with a keen eye for good art. Although the Muller Collection is best known for shin hanga, Mr. Muller also collected late nineteenth century prints and good reproductions of famous Edo masters. When Mr. Muller passed away on April 10. 2003, he had left possibly the largest and finest collection of 20th century Japanese prints in the world, and the question of what would become of his notorious collection was a major topic among Japanese print collectors. The finest 20th century prints from his collection were given as a gift to the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. and an exhibit was mounted. Other portions of the collection were sold at auction and still more remains with his heirs. Several books have been published about the collection. He and Hiroshi Yoshida(1876-1950) are widely regarded as two of the greatest artists of the shin hanga style. And are known especially for their excellent landscape prints. During the forty years of his artistic career, Hasui worked closely with Watanabe Shozaburo(1885-1962) publisher and advocate of the shin hanga movement. His works became widely known in the West through American connoisseur Robert O. Muller(1911-2003) In 1956. He was named a Living National Treasure in Japan. Hasui worked almost exclusively on landscape and townscape prints based on sketches he made in Tokyo and during travels around Japan. However. His prints are not merely meisho(famous places) prints that are typical of earlier ukiyo-e masters such as Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai(1760-1849) Hasui’s prints feature locale that are tranquil and obscure in the then-urbanizing Japan. The dreamlike quality in Hasui’s prints epitomizes a yearning for the past and a preservation of the past in the midst of rapid modernization. This charmingly design is by Chokosai Eisho(Japanese. Active c. 1790-1799) one of the greatest Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period. The title of this lovely work is Beauty with a Goldfish from Eisho’s famous series Comparison of Beauties in the Gay Quarters. Here we see a young girl. Possibly a courtesan or a teahouse waitress, playing with her pet goldfish. She smiles with delight as she watches the little fish swim around the glass bowl. She is dressed in a simple grey and white checked kimono with her hair held high on her head with wooden hairpins and a pretty pink ribbon. The background is warm grey mica. A wonderful insight into life during the Edo period of Japan. This is a classic image from the golden age of ukiyo-e. It was made from recarved wooden blocks using exactly the same technique. And with the same excellent detail ... moreand rich color, as the original. It would be a superb choice for any discerning collector. Selecting a later edition print like this is an exciting way to add to a collection and is also a wonderful way to decorate– at a small fraction of the staggering cost of a print from the first edition. Framed and matted. This print would make a stunning presentation by itself or in a grouping with other prints. Chokosai Eisho is represented in many of the world’s leading museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York; the Museum of Fine Arts. Boston; the British Museum. London; the Hermitage Museum. Saint Petersburg, Russia; and the Tokyo National Museum. Tight registration and solid key lines Color: Fine. Saturated color and bleed through to verso Provenance: From the Robert O. Muller estate. A delightful print showing a jungle crow on a blossoming cherry tree branch. WHO WAS ROBERT O. MULLER? Robert O. Muller first encountered a Japanese print in the 1930s as a student in New York City when he spotted a Hasui landscape in the window of a gallery. He immediately arranged to purchase it. Later. As a newly wed in 1940 he went on a print shopping tour to Japan with his wife where he met the shin hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo and Watanabe's stable of artists including: Kawase Hasui. Shiro ... moreKasamatsu, and Ito Shinsui. He also met and befriended Hiroshi Yoshida. After WWII. Muller continued to deal in Japanese prints, but he was also an avid collector with a keen eye for good art. Although the Muller estate is best known for shin hanga, Mr. Muller also collected late nineteenth century prints and good reproductions of famous Edo masters. When Mr. Muller passed away on April 10. 2003, he had left possibly the largest and finest estate of 20th century Japanese prints in the world, and the question of what would become of his notorious estate was a major topic among Japanese print collectors. The finest 20th century prints from his estate were given as a gift to the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. and an exhibit was mounted. Other portions of the estate were sold at auction and still more remains with his heirs. Several books have been published about the estate.
