Antique Fukagawa Sei Meiji Morning Glory Scalloped Plate Dish Cobalt & Gilt
An extremely fine Japanese porcelain plate from Fukagawa Sei. Dating to the Meiji period, late 19 th to early 20 th century. This exquisite dish has a fluted and scalloped rim. And is hand decorated with an Aesthetic period tapestry of pink and yellow morning glories with blue leaves on a cobalt blue ground. The flowers, leaves, and background are all high-lighted in gold. The sides(underneath) of the dish/bowl are further embellished with stylized prunus blossoms in orange on blue branches. The plate is signed with the Mt. Fuji mark and kanji which. I am told, dates it to the Meiji period. Size: 9-3/4" diameter. Condition: Very good vintage condition. There are NO chips or cracks. The enamel decoration shows wear from utensils and perhaps stacking. There is one area where it appears the decoration was repainted- the gold on that leaf ... moreis not so fine. And the edge shows a white paint which was perhaps a primer coat for the touch-up. The underneath is all original so it is clear that it was not a repair of a chip, but rather of the enamel only- it may have been scraped off previously by a plate hanger. c1900 Meiji Koransha/Fukagawa Creamer. Hichozan, Samurai/Geisha Hello. Fukagawa Fan! You are bidding on a real antique-1860s Imperial Fukagawa- Creamer with Samurai/Geisha handpainting. According to the antique literatures including the authoritative the Modern and Contemporary Marks of Hizen Ceramics, listed as well. The Fukagawa family managed to get an export permit from the government back in 1860s and started exporting western style table wares. And 8th Eizaemon Fukagawa established Koransha in 1875, 8th year of Meiji, read below, and immediately started using the Orchid base mark. So, the base mark with" Fukagawa Sei/Tsukuku" meaning manufactured by Fukagawa and" Hichozan" meaning Arita pottery stone mountain was used ONLY between 1860s to 1875. That is the turbulent period turning from Edo to Meiji. Away ahead of ... morethe establishment of Fukagawa Ceramic Corporation. Arita potters back then knew little about the manufacturing of the western style table wares and were struggling with a continuing process of trial and error. Their products were far inferior than their western rivals Meissen and Limoges in many ways. The Arita clay was grayish and mass-molding was not yet developed, although Meissen was initially established by the German King then who was fascinated about Arita wares to"copy" them in early 1700s. Arita potters. As a"last resort, painted"exotic scenes with Samurai/Geisha to gain popularity in the west then. I believe the pattern is called"Fabulous Dragon" but I stand to be corrected. They have a"high glaze" finish and in the photographs. Some light is being reflected. Each stands 9 inches(22.5cm) tall. The bases carry the Fukagawa mark for 1895- 1925. Please see photographs. They weigh just over 1kg each so would overseas bidders in particular please note the shipping costs BEFORE bidding. Ornate Fukagawa Blue/Green/Pink/White/Gold Peony Vase With Orginal Wooden Box
What makes this vase so unusual is the exquisite detailing and the quantity of gold used. Very few Fukagawa items approach this level of detail. When set next to this vase. Most other Fukagawa items look simplistic. The background of the vase is white glazed, however in the background is covered by pink with gold centers, both open and in bud, with red and gold leaves and dark blue and gold leaves. It is approximately 5.1 inches tall, It is in excellent condition with no chips, scratches, cracks or other marks.
