These craftsmen began making articulated metal sculptures such as crabs, shrimps and insects and their uncanny resemblance to the counterparts in nature had attracted numerous collectors over the past 140+ years. This piece was created by the 51st generation artist Muneyuki Myochin(1917-2011) as it is signed on the piece as well as signed on the box. It was published by the Tokyo National Museum in 2008 as part of their exhibition of Japanese metal articulated creatures. Here is a fabulous 19th century Meiji period Japanese carved okimono.signed by the artist and master carver Naito Shizukuni(1868 to 1912) and from a prominent estate in Charleston. South Carolina. In 1906 in the“ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MODERN JAPAN” section of a book by Yoshitaro Takenobu. It is stated that Shizukuni was considered the best living artist of the Okawa School.a school which had been established as early as 200 years prior to 1906. It describes the method that Shizukuni used which was to carve in several pieces and arrange to look as if carved from one block. This carving is so very detailed down to the toes and fingers of the children…the clothes drape realistically and the scene is very interesting as the family catches grasshoppers with the grasshopper cage at their feet which opens to reveal two grasshoppers inside. While artistically done these roosters are so opulent and vibrant they almost qualify as Hollywood Regency. Both roosters are marked/incised‘JAPAN’ under one wing.
