Yoshitoshi Taiso -- The Yugao Chapter from "The Tale of Genji"
Also known as"Vine Spirit Moon. from Yoshitoshi's marvelous"One Hundred Aspects Of The Moon" series. Engraved by Yamamoto; Taiso seal; and first printed in March 1886. This example is#29 from the definitive Stevenson book. And is described there as follows: Here Yugao's ghost wafts wistfully through her garden on a night of the full moon: yugao is known also as'moonflower. Flowers and vines show through the ghost's transparent body. Her figure seems to have no volume, as if projected onto a surface, like a screen. The shade of blue used for Yugao's eye and lips is subtly different from that used for the background wash, making them stand out without over-emphasizing them; blue lips were a convention used to indicate a person who was dead or dying. Also highlighted are the yellow centers of the flowers; in ... morethe original print the white petals are embossed. The gourd is shaded on one side to give an impression of roundness. The colors have been beautifully printed to shade into nothingness at the bottom of the picture. This example measures approximately 13 3/4" by 9 1/2" I.e. it has been slightly trimmed. The print is backed(as is usual with prints of this age) with very nice colors and clear embossing on all three(3) white flowers. There are a few small marks and/or spots present, but these do not at all detract from the beauty of the image. All in all, an excellent example of a beautiful print, here for you at an excellent price. Your Yoshitoshi print will be sent out(shipped flat. Of course) within 3(three) business days of your payment. Sorry- no shipments outside the lower 48 states UNLESS you discuss this with me first, and all shipments are to verified addresses only. Sizes: Image: 6.1" x 3.9" Background Paper: 10.6" x 7.7" Publication: Printed in 1890's. This is an original produced by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Comments: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi( 1839–1892) also named Taiso Yoshitoshi was a Japanese artist. He is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e. A type of Japanese woodblock printing. He is additionally regarded as one of the form's greatest innovators. His career spanned two eras– the last years of Edo period Japan, and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration. Like many Japanese, Yoshitoshi was interested in new things from the rest of the ... moreworld, but over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many aspects of traditional Japanese culture, among them traditional woodblock printing. By the end of his career, Yoshitoshi was in an almost single-handed struggle against time and technology. As he worked on in the old manner, Japan was adopting Western mass reproduction methods like photography and lithography. Nonetheless, in a Japan that was turning away from its own past, he almost singlehandedly managed to push the traditional Japanese woodblock print to a new level, before it effectively died with him. His life is perhaps best summed up by John Stevenson: Yoshitoshi's courage. Vision and force of character gave ukiyo-e another generation of life, and illuminated it with one last burst of glory. John Stevenson. Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Aspects of the Moon. 1992 His reputation has only continued to grow. Both in the West, and among younger Japanese, and he is now almost universally recognized as the greatest Japanese artist of his era.
