The Ming Dynasty brush pots are of Vietnamese origin. Dating to approximately 1400 AD; a sea salvaged and officially recorded piece from the'Hoi-An' Shipwreck. A beautiful. Unusual porcelain bowl from the famous Hoi An cargo. The Ming Dynasty bowl is of Vietnamese origin. Dating to approximately 1400 AD; a sea salvaged and officially recorded piece from the'Hoi-An' Shipwreck. The deep bowl is of beautiful form. With ring base, flaring walls and slightly everted lip. Painted in blue on white with scrolling floral decorations, the tondo(central reserved area) depicts a thickly painted Chinese cloud scroll, the exterior of the bowl with a band of continuous leaf and flower meander, a further band of lotus petals decorates the bottom of the body.The base of the vessel is left unglazed and adorned with cafe au lait slip. A wonderful piece. This rare piece has a wonderful. Romantic provenance. It was excavated from the important Hoi-An shipwreck. The Hoi-An was a huge, overloaded trading ship ... morethat sank in the mid 15th Century, probably due to a catastrophic typhoon. The ship was carrying a substantial cargo of High Quality Vietnamese Ming export porcelain. We know that the Hoi An wares were produced in Kilns near modern-day Hanoi and were probably bound for the European Market before the ship was cruelly destroyed and sunk 250 feet into the cold waters of the South China Sea. The fascinating story of the Hoi-An and its recovery has been made into a best-selling novel by Frank Pope, entitled Dragon Sea: A True Tale of Treasure. Archeology, and Greed Off the Coast of Vietnam. In contrast to many unprovenanced Hoi An pieces on the market. This ceramic has been officially recorded by the Vietnamese authorities(VISAL) whose sticker is affixed to the artifact. The recent ratification of the UNESCO convention by South East Asian countries will effectively put a halt to all future shipwreck salvage operations. Antique CHINESE 17" Carved Wood Mythical LOHAN FIGURE - Ming, Qing, or Republic?
Up for auction with no reserve is this wonderfully expressive mythical Lohan figure from China's rich artistic past. Whether this piece is early 20th century. 19th century, or perhaps even 18th century would take someone with far more expertise than I possess. But I do know that this beautiful figure has been in my family since the 1920's or'30's, handed down from my grandmother to my mother and then to me. It stands 17 inches high. Is 6 inches across at the base and weighs just under 4 pounds. There's about 48 inches of what I call"wire rope trim" on the hems of the robe, the sleeves, and the neckline, with about a total of 5 or 6 inches of it missing. It may or may not actually be metallic- could be a heavy varnished thread or whatever- but I'm not about to rip a piece off to find out. There are also three ... moremetallic-appearing medallions of approximately 1 1/2 inches across that are applied on the robe- front, sleeve, and rear. The surface of the entire piece appears to be an original combination of gilt and paint and now has a wonderful and consistent patina. With the singular exception of the underside of the base which appears to have been painted a reddish brown at some later time. I am not aware of anyone in my family having done this so I would guess some well-meaning soul who wanted to protect the unfinished raw wood underneath must have painted it probably about 100 years ago. And, to me, the patina on the rest of the figure looks at least another century older than that. If anyone has a clue as to the true age or origin, please let me know so I can include that information here. There is a small. Tight crack on the head as well as a 1/2 inch chip out of the surface also on the head as shown in the photos. Other than the issues already discussed which are all shown in the photos, there are no cracks, breaks, damages, repairs or blemishes whatsoever. With his whimsical, knowing, bemused expression, this figure has a most impressive presence and is always a joy to behold. I

Charming Ming Dynasty Blue & White Bowl
This attractive Ming dynasty bowl was made during the transitional period of the Chongzhen(1627-1644) reign. The bowl is decorated on the outer wall in underglaze blue with a stylized floral motif and a wave pattern boarder under the rim. There are 2 blue bands encircling the outer wall near the foot. Within the base is stuck kiln grit. As is often the case with this type of Swatow-wear. There is some surface wear and minor firing faults to the rim. The inside of the bowl features a single floral motif in the center encircled by two blue bands and another near the top of the rim. There is a single hairline crack running vertically from the rim, clearly visible as it has become stained due to long burial. There are no damages,repairs or restoration. In fine condition. The diameter is 4 ½ inches andheight 2 inches. Crackled: Anetwork of ... moreirregular cracks in the glaze caused by a disagreement in the rateof shrinkage between body and glaze during cooling. From the Song dynasty andonwards crackles seems to have been intentionally produced as decoration. Theappearance could be enhanced by tea(red) or ink(black) being rubbed into thecracks. Crackle decoration is to be found on such Sung dynasty wares as Ru.Guan, and Ge, or on archaizing wares made later, up until today. Traditionallythe Chinese connoisseurs have been distinguishing between a large, bold,crackle, termed"crab's claw" and a much closer and smaller networktermed"fish roe" crackle. The former developed first, and wasaccentuated with black pigment: the latter, developing at a later stage, wascolored red. On Ge ware sometimes a combination of both are found. Crazing ofthe glaze of some excavated wares might not be intentional, but the result ofburial. Crackled porcelain typically also occurs as a defect when the ceramicpiece is not fired at high enough temperature, but remains somewhat soft. The Censer is also nicely carved decorated all around with period lotus designs. The Censer shows its early age with some wear and a hairline to the rim which could be restored if desired. But for its early age and rarity I believe the Censer should still be a desirable piece with no other cracks. Chips, or repairs. The Vase is finely decorated throughout with a beautiful period design. And vibrant wucai enamel colors. The Vase has two large flying phoenix birds among iron red and green foliage. The Vase shows some wear consistent with its age and has an old repair to the top rim, which could be restored if desired. But you Rarely see Authentic period pieces like this come up for auction so I think it should still be a desirable find, and is otherwise in good condition with no other damages or repairs.
