Antique Japanese Kogai not a Netsuke Ojime or Inro. Lacquer piece Meiji jewellry
Here is delightful little find. I collect Japanese Inro and couldn't resist the fantastic gold lacquer painting on this tiny thing. It is a real pleasure to handle and study. Could be converted to an Ojime easily. I'm almost certain that is a top locking piece from a kogai hair-pin. Reminds me of an Ojime or netsuke and would sit well in a collection of such items. A great example of the lacquer craftsman's skill. This piece is tiny. Minor surface wear and patination commensurate with age. Tiny grey speckles visible on the photos are part of the foliage. Not damage. Depicting birds and foliage. Period: Meiji. 31mm x 11mm(slightly tapering form) Questions welcome. Please see my signed Meiji miniature Inro listed this week.

SUPERB ANTIQUE JAPANESE LACQUER STACKING BOX Fine Maki-e Inro Like Meiji Period
ELEGANT JAPANESE LACQUER STACKING BOX Meiji Period Superb antique Japanese lacquerware cylindrical stacking box. Embellished with elegant gold and silver maki-e depicting a variety of lovely flowers and a traditional bamboo fence. The inro-like box is neatly stacked and fits tightly together with three compartments and a round lid. The lower compartment is carefully lined with brass. Remnants of powdered makeup can be seen at the edges of the interior compartments. And we believe this box was most likely a dresser box belonging to a wealthy woman or geisha. If only it could tell the stories of what it quietly witnessed over 100 years ago. This tasteful lacquer stacking box m easures approximately 2 5/8" high by 2" wide. And is in excellent antique condition exhibiting just very minor wear commensurate with age. Representing the ... moreattention to detail and exceptional artistry applied to everyday objects in the age of the Shogun and Samurai, this box would make a wonderful addition for the collector of inro, sagemono, netsuke, and other precious Japanese antiques. Vintage Japanese Inro Nice Carved Horn Bone? Lion Lid & Dragon Netsuke
This auction offers this nice old Aisian(Japanese/Chinese) inro. This piece was an estate purchase. I was unable to obtain any info at the sale and I am far from being an expert on such pieces so please look at my pictures carefully. I believe this piece is carved bone or horn but I'm not positive. It is in no way translucent but the inside is shaded like a horn(see pic 12) The inro measures 4" high and 2 1/4" wide. The lid features a crouching lion. The base has a dragon on one side and two men on the other. There is some writing along the edge of the lid but I don't know if it's Chinese or Japanese. The inro is in very good condition with no cracks or missing pieces. Please see all pics and email if you need more info. Thanks in advance for your bid!

Christie's London, The David Collection of Fine Inro, Netsuke and Okimono RARE!
I am putting up a selection of Christie’s and Sotheby’s Japanese Art catalogues. They are part of a large collection I am clearing out of my library. They are all in Very Good condition. With some of the covers showing minor shelf-wear. They range in date from the early eighties to the start of the 21st century. Almost all of them have their‘Prices Realised’ lists. You can see in the photograph whether this is true or not. You can assume that if the Prist List is not showing in the main photograph. Then it is not included. I am now adding the extra possibility of sending one catalogue at a time as a letter. The maximum size of a letter with PostNL is 380mm X 265mm X 32 mm. The price to send one catalogue(registered and insured to the maximum of 50 Euros) in a Padded(bubble-wrap) envelope. If it is below 2kg, is as follows: Within the Netherlands: ... more7.50 Euros. Europe: 9.50 Euros. Worldwide: 16.00 Euros(this equates to $21) In future I will be quoting this as the postal price. Except in the case of the Volume weighing more than 2kg. If extra padding, making a larger package necessary, or if further insurance is needed(for more valuable items) then the price of $35 will be applicable(In accordance with PostNL rates for larger packages) I am including the PostNL rates to clarify that I do not charge extra for packing and postage. It generally costs 25.60 Euros(about $35) to send one volume as a package(as opposed to a letter. That is with more wrapping and encased in cardboard) but if a number are combined, and the weight stays below two kilos, then the price remains the same. PostNL charges 35.60 Euros(about $45) for weights between 2 and 5 kg, so that if more are purchased, the price of sending per item goes down considerably. I always use 1 st class registered(and insured) post. Combining catalogues in a package will continue to reduce the price of sending per individual unit.

Because traditional Japanese garb lacked pockets. Objects were often carried by hanging them from the obi, or sash, in containers known as sagemono(a Japanese generic term for a hanging object attached to a sash) Most sagemono were created for specialized contents, such as tobacco, pipes, writing brush and ink, but the type known as inrō was suitable for carrying anything small. Consisting of a stack of tiny. Nested boxes, inrō were most commonly ... moreused to carry identity seals and medicine. The stack of boxes is held together by a cord that is laced through cord runners down one side, under the bottom, and up the opposite side. The ends of the cord are secured to a netsuke, a kind of toggle that is passed between the sash and pants and then hooked over the top of the sash to suspend the inrō. An ojime, or bead, is provided on the cords between the inrō and netsuke to hold the boxes together. This bead is slid down the two suspension cords to the top of the inrō to hold the stack together while the inrō is worn, and slid up to the netsuke when the boxes need to be unstacked to access their contents. ANTIQUE JAPANESE INRO - LACQUER CASES & NETSUKE FROM JAPAN COLLECTING GUIDE
The Inro Handbook. Studies of Netsuke. Inro and Lacquer” By Raymond Bushell. Published in New York by Weatherhill in 2002. 3rd printing. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: For collectors who have discovered the delights of such miniature Japanese art forms as the inro and the netsuke. This authoritative and enlightening book offers a wealth of valuable information. That it also affords entry to a world of fascinating design and superb craftsmanship goes without saying. In addition to illustrating in color and discussing in detail 108 distinguished inro and their accompanying netsuke, as well as 18 related miniature objects, it presents highly informative essays on the making of inro, on pearl shell inlays, and, in particular on the materials and techniques of lacquer art. It is refreshing to have an author tell his readers ... morenot only what his book is but also what it is not. In his introduction Bushell says: This book is addressed to the collector of inro. Netsuke, and other forms of miniature Japanese art, with emphasis on works in lacquer. Its purpose is specific and limited. It is not a comprehensive study of lacquer. It is not a historical survey, a technical analysis, a comparative examination, or a compendium of terms and definitions. In point of time it is limited to the Tokugawa, Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods. In point of craft it is limited to the later development of precise and sophisticated techniques, with their brilliant decorative effects. Bushell points out that he is not making an unnecessary emotional appeal in praise of lacquer. His objective is far more practical. This book is the product of his efforts to understand the structure underlying the beauty of lacquer art and to provide clear and simple explanations. Because other books on the subject had not satisfied him. He undertook his own basic research, and here he presents the information he acquired through painstaking study with master lacquer craftsmen and other authorities. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover.
