Antique Burma(Myanmar) lacquer ware. I had the expert on Burma lacquerware look at this and he said it was from the 1960s and a quality piece. Export quality" he called it. He wrote the book on Burmese lacquerware. 5 3/4 tall and about 3 3/4 inches in diameter. 146 x 95 mm. There is very little old lacquerware around in good condition. The base material drys out and then the lacquer flakes off. This is an exceptional piece purchased by my parents who were missionaries to Burma who retired in 1966. Cheap lacquerware is mostly black with little gold. This one has a lot of genuine pure gold leaf hence more expensive. Shipping in the U. S. is $12.35 by priority mail. Old Antique style Burmese/Shan Sword DHA(Real Fighting Sword) With Sheath and Rope I got this unique piece of quality handmade work from a local black smith up in the mountains of Burma. This short sword has a hand forged Shan style blade with makers mark in burmese letters on the blade. The blade is made of steel that is hard and sharp. Yet still flexible and springy enough not to snap in half. The sheath is made of dark wood wrapped with yellow brass in a traditional style, comes with a red rope around the sheath aswell. This is a real fighting sword, meaning the sword is functional for many kinds of use. This sword was used by the Burmese and Shan army during the Lanna Kingdom 13th-18th C. And till this day the Shan State Army and the Burmese Army are still utilising these swords to fight. A beautiful lacquer betel box made in Pagan. Burma a lacquer making center, in red, black, green and yellow. These boxes contained all the ingredients needed for betel chewing and were brought out when guests arrived. Originally there were two trays inside but this box has only one tray. The quality and detail of the designs are amazing. Musicians on the top. People and fantastical animals on the sides, with writing in cartouches. The base is decorated more simply with trees and griffons( on sides and bottom. The one interior tray is red cinnabar color in the interior with concentric ring decoration on the exterior. A small repousse bowl w/ an Asian figural dance scene. I am not an Asian collector. So I am not sure of the exact origin of the piece. It reminds me of antique Burmese silver repousse bowls, but it may be from another part of the Eastern world(like Thailand or India as a guess) It appears to be silver, but it is not marked as such. I do not think these would have been marked anyway. I do not have a silver test, so I cannot be sure that it is pure or partial silver. I do feel that it has some age and hopefully the photographs will help an interested bidder. It measures about 3 1/2" in diameter at the top and is about 2" deep. It weighs about 2.3 ounces(that is regular ounces, not troy ounces if silver) It does have a mark on the bottom, but it too, is hard to decipher. It appears to have been made by small punch marks. They were a form of medium to tell country folk in far-flung villages the happenings in the Capital. They were allowed safely to divulge bad news to the king when a live messenger would probably have had his head chopped off! And the king himself could reprimand members of his family in a much less direct manner so nobody would lose face. Marionettes first made their appearance on the cultural scene in the 15th century according to written records and reached the peak of their popularity and power during the 18th century. Other troupes would roam the country playing at Pagoda festivals, which are the country fairs of Myanmar: these troupes would include in their performances scenarios of what was going on in court circles, including royal scandals, much to the enjoyment of the villagers. Antique Burmese 27" Hand Painted Carved Wooden String Marionette Jointed Puppet. This is an awesome 27" antique hand painted and hard wood carved Burmese marionette. Fully jointed string puppet. He is dressed in a traditional silk and sequin costume. He is an early hand carved example with two part jointed fingers and working mouth movement. This marionette comes with all it's original(I believe) strings and a wooded carved top puppet controller. His face, feet and hands are all hand painted in white, with red and black decoration detail. His beard I believe is made from horse hair pony tails. His style and design is typical of his period and I would date him to possibly early 1900's. I believe him to be a Burmese marionette. His strings are tangled and the one working his mouth needs replacing but otherwise in condition ... moreis excellent with only minor surface blemishes due to age and use. Up for auction is Antique Burmese Buddhist Black& Gold Lacquered Palm Leaves Kammavaca Pali Book. Measures 5 1/8" tall x 22 1/4" wide x 2" deep. In fine original condition. This is a Buddhist prayer book manuscript decorated with mythical creatures and written in sacred Pali script. With red, gold, and black lacquer on palm leaves. There is some wear to the gold lacquer surface from age and there is only one chip to a corner of one of the palm leaf pages. Kept safe in storage for years. The mountain tribes of the Golden Triangle(Burma.Lao and Thailand) used these small animal-figure weights to weight opium when the opium trade was flourishing in the area around the 18-19th century, although they were made actually for everyday use, including all sort of commercial. It is not exactly known when this sort of weight originated but some archaeological excavation documentation mentioned a finding of duck shape and lion shape sculptures dating back to 100-400 A.D. in Central Burma. It is hard to tell the age of each opium weight. But it can be estimated by the consistancy of the alloy it made of. Up until last half of 19th century, they were made of bronze while the older ones,made in 16th/17th century, contained more copper and thus are more reddish color. During late 17th and 18th century, tin was most prevalent and giving more silvery hue. Most after that they were cast from alloy with solf yellow of bronze. In the late 19th/20th century the material was majorly brass. Modern reproductions are plenty in market. And they are not to be condemned as long as they are being offered at price corresponding to their true value and specified with accurate date of production.
