The chair was used to be attached on a elephant’s back and few people sat in it to be transported to another place and sometimes was used to hunt. It is an unbelievable piece of art. Made of solid wood(probably mahogany wood) and carved with golden leave flowers motives. Some discolored are present and not to be mistaken for scratches or damaged, and has 6(removable) knobs, with 2 of them slightly damaged on top. See last photo) This piece of art is usable to sit on it or just to display. We had this Elephant Chair at the end of our bed in our bedroom(pet and smoke free home) since the early 70’s. Vintage Burma / Myanmar Marionette Burmese Puppet Doll With Mustache 28" Tall
I'm offering a wonderful. Hand carved and painted, vintage Burmese marionette– puppet. This Myanmar, traditional doll, measures 28" from top of his hat to the bottom of his wooden feet. He is a fabulously dressed in a red corduroy outfit with silver metallic trim and purple pants. He has a gold sequined banner across his chest. He has a mustache, probably horse hair, and a moveable mouth. His neck is carved with a separate disc to make it more movable, as are his legs which have two sections. This is a marvelous piece of ethnic workmanship. All strings are still attached(I think) There are small flecks off the paint here and there. But he is fairly clean and I can see no major damage. Many sequins are missing from his banner. Sadly, he is not signed. Please view my photographs for more description. An I believe Mid 19th Century proposition in every sense. The figural weight is conceived as a Hintha duck and shows a frieze of notches at the top of the round base. This corresponds very well to type"H3B" on Hartmut Mollat's model chronology chart, so dating circa 1850 or so(prior to 1868) there is no verification mark evident, but in this case that is a good thing- Mollat says it is usually missing on this type. The offered necessity of trade and commerce fulfills all of Mollat's criterea for the H3B type. If you know the genre and understand ... morethe significance of such a genuine example, the offered beauty needs no further descriptors. Weight is correct for a 20 Tical weight at about 345.9 grams on my portable digital scale; this is just slightly to the heavy side of proper, but not overly so. Condition is quite fine with an aura of good age to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly, the underside of the base exhibits the sort of charismatic evidence of genuine wear as proper and desired. There are no hidden restorations. There are otherwise just typical and expected signs of period purposeful use and then long display in that Tucson home, all speaking to the history and here simply more evidence of the real thing. Size is about 2 11/16 in. high. With meditative facial expression, emphasized by the half-closed eyes which look downward, much original lacquer& some gilt remaining in excellent condition. He his carved from one large tree trunk or piece of native wood. Heavy& Thick Lacquer and was gilted. He was appraised by Bonhams and Butterfield 15 years ago for Mr Rothschild. I'm in the process of finding that appraisal but it was for significantly more money. This classic Burmese bronze Buddha from the late 17th/early 19th century. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest(i.e. Spirits of trees, water, etc. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths( lit. green death" They may thus also be called nat sein(lit. green spirits) The word'sein' while meaning'green' is being used to mean'raw' in this context. There are however two types of nats in Burmese Buddhist belief. Nat spirits are termed lower nats or auk nats whether named or unnamed. Whereas ahtet nats or higher nat dewas inhabit the six heavens. Much like sainthood, nats can be designated for a variety of reasons, including those only known in certain regions in Burma. Nat worship is less common in urban areas ... morethan in rural areas, and is practised among ethnic minorities as well as in the mainstream Bamar society. It is however among the Buddhist Bamar that the most highly developed form of ceremony and ritual is seen. Beautiful and rather grand statue of the Lord Buddha carved from one piece of wood, lacquered and gilded in Burma, sometime in the late 1800's. He is made in what is known as the Mandalay style During the Konbaung Dynasty in Burma. At the end of the 18th century, the Mandalay style of the Buddha image emerged. A style that remains popular to this day. There was a marked departure from the Ava style. Which featured much more attenuated figurers. In the Mandalay style the Buddha's face is much more natural and full, with naturally-slanted eyebrows, slightly slanted eyes, thicker lips, and a round hair bun at the top. Mandalay-style Buddhas wear flowing. Draped robes. This is precisely what we have in the present Buddha: a more natural. ... moreOr, if you will, human, representation of the Enlightened One, with beautifully carved and articulated robes. Our Buddha sits on a moon disk supported by a double lotus petal throne. He is seated in the full lotus or adamantine position. Wonderful Antique 19th C Carved Burmese Teak Wood Case Poppies Opium Scale
This is a lovely 19th Century Burmese hand carved teak wood box with Opium scale inside! The carved design of Poppies is on each side of the box. A small nail holds the ends as shown. Old metal scale inside with metal fulcrum. Plates, etc. Old twine or thread attached as shown. Balance seems to work great. A magnet does not stick to any of the metal. The box was made so that the scale fits inside. This is from Burma. Circa 1880s. Condition looks good. Patina is quite nice. Approximately 8.25" tall x 4" across by 1.5" deep. This is a charming. Antique 19th Century Bronze Burmese Bell Kyeezee Spinning Gong Elephant Howdah
Up for sale is an antique heavy bronze kyeezee or burmese bell. Gong can be suspended from a cord and held in hand while striking the tip with a small wooden mallet. Thus causing it to sound and spin simultaneously. This traditional Burmese instrument features a large elephant with a howdah perched on its back. The relief is duplicated on the reverse. It appears to be cast bronze with an engraved design. I had listed this item previously as an amulet or medallion before having it properly appraised. Despite its intended purpose, it can certainly be worn as an amulet on a leather cord or simply used as a decorative paperweight. It measures approximately 6 by 4 inches. Piece shows some wear with a dark patina. Piece is unmarked and the true age is unknown. I did notice, however, a mark on the reverse side of the bale but I do not know if this ... moreis a hallmark. Piece probably originates from Myanmar and would have been used by Buddhist monks in their temples. Piece was lightly cleaned before being photographed.
