Original 1855 Survey Map SMITHLAND DAM Cumberland River Ohio Kentucky Dog Island
Original 1855 Survey Map SMITHLAND DAM Cumberland River Ohio Kentucky Dog Island Original lithographed fold-out survey chart of the Ohio River in the vicinity of Cumberland Island and Smithland. Kentucky, printed more than 158 years ago. The image area measures 33.7 x 75 cm[13-1/4" x 29-1/2" And the map is drawn on a scale of 880 feet to one inch. Details include soundings, locations of proposed and existing dams and jetties, and the low water lines of 1848 and 1855. It labels Cumberland Island and Dog Island, as well as the shorelines of Illinois and Kentucky. The map was compiled under the direction of Lieutenant James William Abert of the U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers. And published in a report to Congress by President Franklin Pierce. Its full title is Sketch of the Ohio River at Cumberland Dam. Illustrating Appx. Doc. ... moreNo. 3 Longs Annual Report Sept. 1855, Transferred from a sketch of C.A. Fuller Esqr. by J.W. Abert, Lt. U.S. Top. Eng. The scans below give a closer look: James William Abert was an American soldier. Explorer, ornithologist and topographical artist. Ten years before this map was compiled, John Charles Frémont gave Abert command of the Canadian River exploratory mission, and his description of the habits and customs of the Kiowa and Comanche Indians proved of great value to the federal government. Along with his maps and written accounts, Abert made several sketches and watercolors of native animals and outstanding Indian personalities, including the Kiowa chief Dohäsan. Condition: This map is trimmed to the neat in the lower left corner. And some of the folds have been reinforced on the reverse side with archival tape. It is printed on lightweight paper, typical of government documents of the time and has toned slightly along the folds, although the camera tends to exaggerate this. Overall in very good condition, with no marks. Rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. We will ship this map to you carefully rolled in a sturdy tube

Nova Virginie Tabula Hand Colored Map of VA, MD and DE Arnoldus Montanus 1671
Nova Virginie Tabula Hand Colored Map of VA. MD and DE done by John Ogilby or Arnoldus Montanus 1671 Here is a great old map of the Chesapeake Bay area for your buying consideration. This map was originally done 342 years ago. Was fashioned after or used maps of the area by the John Smith expedition/settlement in the Jamestown. VA area earlier in that century. Recently picked this nice piece up at an auction. And remember. There is never any sales tax to our US customers as we live in Delaware, the home of tax free shopping! The map was created by either John Ogilby of London or Arnoldus Montanus in Amsterdam. One of these maps just sold at Christie's in 2011 for $1.500(then add the 25% buyers premium on to that of course. Ouch! and they could not figure out which of the two cartographers did the map either. Another one is for sale at ... morethe Old Print Shop in NYC for $2.500. Any help in identifying which of the two folks generated the map would be appreciated. Your identity would be kept anonymous. Thanks. The map looks to be in very good condition. The only issues I see to report is in the lower left corner under the"U" in Virginicum. Appears to be a stain or mark on the map about 1/2" below that. Also. Some small spotting in the lower Bay and going up into what is now the James River and to the east of the Susquehanna River. I see no rips or older repairs to the map, appears to still be intact from when originally generated. The hand coloring on this map was very well done. And check out all the details for the area at that time. The orientation of this map is very unique as well. A few of those islands showing in the Bay certainly are not there any more! The map was matted and framed by Main Line Art Supply in Narberth. PA many moons ago from the look of the backing and frame. The map has a simple wood frame around it that is finished in gold paint. The glass is still intact. No cracking or blistering of the glass. The framed piece is 14.75" tall, by 18-7/8" across, by 3/4" wide.

1787 Ramsay Map or Plan of Yorktown. Virginia(Revolutionary War) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Plan du Siege d'York et de Gloucester par les Armees Alliees en Septembre et Octobre 1781. Description: An exceptional 1787 map of the Battle of Yorktown by David Ramsay and Charles Picquet. Ramsay prepared this map for issue in his Histoire de la Revolution d'Amerique. A period account the Siege of Yorktown in which Ramsay participated as a field commander and surgeon. The Siege of Yorktown, Battle of Yorktown, or Surrender at Yorktown, the latter taking place on October 19, 1781, was a decisive victory by a combined force of American Continental Army led by General George Washington and French Army troops led by the Comte de Rochambeau over a British Army commanded by British lord and Lieutenant General Lord ... moreCornwallis. The culmination of the Yorktown campaign, the siege proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in North America, as the surrender by Cornwallis and the capture of both him and his army prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict. The map offers splendid detail illustrating various ships engaged in battle, some of which are sinking, and includes positions and movements of the French, English, and American combatants. Key sites, including General Washington's Quarters, Rochambeau's Quarters, Knox's Quarters, Clinton's Quarters, Baron von Steuben's Quarters, and the locations of a number of French commanders, the positions of the various batteries and groups of armies are noted. Militias are even noted by state. A table in the upper left quadrant features a key presenting the precise positioning of British warships. Just to the right of the battlefield the Maison de Moore(House of Moore) is identified. It was here that the opposing commander met after the battle to draft the Articles of Capitulation surrendering York and Gloucester to the victorious Continental forces. Drawn by David Ramsay an

Map of the State of Virginia, US Coast Survey, 1862 Civil War, Eastern Theater
Large. 4 color map of the State of Virginia by the United States Coast Survey by A.D. Bache, Superintendent, Washington, DC, 1862. Lithography by Chas. G. Krebs. and compiled by W.L. Nicholson, printed and distributed by W.H. amp; O. H. Morrison. Unfolded measures 24"x38" folded into hard cover, 3 5/8" x 5 5/8" This was the primary general map of the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War, needed by bureaucrats in Washington and Richmond alike and by armchair Generals and anxious families alike. The US Coast Survey was the high end scientific and cartographic bureau that survey millions of square miles and its value was never more apparent. Mapping products were at a premium and better mapped units strongly tended to perform better in the field than those with less terrain information. This map would be a strategic ... morerather than a tactical tool and filled a significant void in planning and operations. The map is much more than just cities, towns, railroads and rivers. The map also shows the State of West Virginia before in actually joined the union(July, 1863) population tables of whites, free blacks and slaves and railroad tables. Perhaps most importantly the Federal government literally put the bullseye of the Confederate capital of Richmond! Concentric rings measured in 10 mile increments give purchase to the Union war aims and the"On to Richmond" jingoism of the day. It also foreshadows little crossroads towns like Gettysburg, Pa and Appomattox, VA. CONDITION: ex libris: Burrowes Library, San Francisco Theological Seminary, Presbyterian Church(bookplate on inside hard cover) front hard cover detached, rear hard cover fixed to map in sw corner and has pierced the railroad table, other splits mostly along old fold creases, few tears at not folds(see images) light water damage in sw corner, very light dirt and spotting. In all with minor curatorial ministration, a very fine image. This is an great map and entirely worthy of best preservation practices. I have placed a provisional $
