Authentic Civil War Ohio Squirrel Hunter Discharge Certificate & Letter Militia
AUTHENTIC OHIO"SQUIRREL HUNTER" CIVIL WAR DISCHARGE CERTIFICATE AND LETTER Up for auction is an authentic Civil War discharge certificate and letter for an Ohio"Squirrel Hunter" militia soldier. The certificate was issued to John H. Smith(born about 1830) A carpenter residing in Canton, Ohio during the Civil War. When Ohio Governor David Tod issued a proclamation to all Ohioans in 1862 to defend Cincinnati from advancing Confederate forces, John Smith joined a militia of over 15,000 armed men(referred to as the"Squirrel Hunters" and headed to Cincinnati. According to a Confederate scout, they came dressed in all types of clothing and armed with an assortment of weapons usually used to hunt squirrels" He went on to say"They call them Squirrel Hunters; farm boys that never had to shoot at the same squirrel ... moretwice. For two weeks. The Squirrel Hunters manned hastily prepared but substantial earthworks across from Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky and repelled the Confederate advance. To thank the Squirrel Hunters, the Ohio legislature, in 1863, authorized funds for Governor Tod to print discharges for these men from military duty. The discharges thanked the men for their patriotism and their willingness to sacrifice their lives in the defense of Ohio. This auction includes the original discharge certificate issued to John H. Smith. As well as the accompanying letter(also personalized to John Smith) The letter and certificate each measure approximately 11 3/8" x 9 1/4" The certificate has very nice graphics of a squirrel hunter, union flag, and a squirrel in a tree. I purchased these documents at an estate sale earlier this year. They are guaranteed to be original Civil War era items. For much more information about the Ohio"Squirrel Hunters" Please see the following link: Condition of these collectible Ohio Squirrel Hunter discharge documents is FAIR. The certificate has some age toning and chipping along the lower edge. There is also a crease in the lower marg
