Map Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas - 1867/1870 - KY TN - US
This auction is for the map of 2 American states: Kentucky and Tennessee from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in its original unrestored state. The colors are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very legible. The center seam is still completely intact but has a couple of thin spots. There are a few stains but nothing out the detracts much from the map itself. I have tried to capture the most obvious flaws in the pictures. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor condition) but it has already been split up. I will be posting a few sections at a time but they are in ... morea pretty random order as I don't really know much about which may be more desirable. If the postings are up at the same time, I will be happy to combine shipping. One of the pictures is the title page. Which I have included as a reference, this is not part of the map. This hand colored Steel Plate engraving Map was published by Johnson& Ward. Measures 26 1/2" x 18 3/16" and is in good condition with light foxing, creasing and minimal staining as shown. 5" tear at lower margin as shown. The book was no longer bound so I am putting them all up individually. shipping is the same no matter how many you buy in the US. The paper they are on are all aprox 26.5 x 18 inches. The printed map is slightly smaller. These are all original, hand painted maps that are two pages from the Johnson's Family Atlas that appear to be expertly spliced together. These maps are very old and somewhat brittle, and some may have tears and minor spotting. This particular map has a great deal of tearing, but could be repaired. An ORIGINAL antique 1864 map of VIRGINIA. WEST VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, and DELAWARE from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. The counties are individually hand water colored and a number of early railroads are shown with their names printed next to them. One of the first maps published of WEST VIRGINIA which had just become a State in 1863. Note that the plate used to make older maps of VIRGINIA had not been completely updated. The map still has the bold name"VIRGINIA" still printed across both States. This may have been done partly to appease Southerners who bought large numbers of Johnson's Atlases during the Civil War. What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads.
