It is from an 1872 edition of Asher& Adams' Topographical Atlas of the United States(New York: Asher& Adams. 1872) a copy of the title page is included for authenticity. There is a copyright in small print in the bottom margins stating"Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1872 by Asher& Adams. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic, blank on the reverse. Overall, a very nice map that would frame up nicely. It is a fairly scarce map in a large elephant folio format that is very detailed for the period rivaling the more common Johnson atlas of the period in terms of detail, size and color. Overall a very nice map that would frame up well. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 16 by 22 inches(41x56cm) on a page measuring 17 1/2 by 24 1/4" 44x62cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall tonal ageing. Original hand coloring, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy page. There is some darkening around the edges, nicked bottom corners, slight darkening on the top corners as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. The actual map looks better than the pics. Description: A fine full color example of Francis Lamb's 1676 map of Virginia. Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay. Oriented to the west, Lamb's map covers from Albemarle Sound to the Susquehanna River and from the Appellation Mountains to the Delaware Bay and New Jersey, inclusive of all of modern day Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Delaware Bay. The map notably includes the Chesapeake Bay's western watershed, luring potential colonists with the promise of large navigable rivers and rich fertile lands. The English text on the verso, drawn from Ogilby, further entices with descriptions of Maryland as'abounding with many fort of fruits and ... moreother commodities' and Virginia as'very wholesome and agreeable to English constitutions' Indigenous American Indian villages and lands throughout the region are also noted and distinguishable from European cities for the latter being depicted as churches. A fine and large decorative title cartouche of a baroque ethic appears in the upper right quadrant. A secondary cartouche bearing the royal armorial crest of King James II of England hovers over the distance scale in the opposite upper quadrant. Cartographically Lamb's map is considered by scholars to be the ninth and last derivative of John Smith's 1612 map of the same region. It is therefore of considerable significance. In 1673 Augustine Herman issued his own outstanding map of the Chesapeake and the surrounding colonies. Herman's map was a significant step forward in the cartography of the region and the first major deviation from the Smith map. Subsequent cartography, Lamb's included, struggled to reconcile Smith's established cartography with Hermann's more sophisticated treatment. Description: A fine full color example of Francis Lamb's 1676 map of Virginia. Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay. Oriented to the west, Lamb's map covers from Albemarle Sound to the Susquehanna River and from the Appellation Mountains to the Delaware Bay and New Jersey, inclusive of all of modern day Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Delaware Bay. The map notably includes the Chesapeake Bay's western watershed, luring potential colonists with the promise of large navigable rivers and rich fertile lands. Cartographically Lamb's map is considered by scholars to be the ninth and last derivative of John Smith's 1612 map of the same region. It is therefore of considerable significance. In 1673 Augustine Herman issued his own outstanding map of the Chesapeake and the surrounding colonies. Herman's map was a significant step forward in the cartography of the region and the first major deviation from the Smith map. Description: This is a fine example of Robert de Vaugondy's 1755 map of the Virginian. Delaware, and Maryland, including the Chesapeake Bay. The map extends from the Allegany Mountains eastward to the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and Atlantic Ocean. Parts of adjacent New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina are also included. Cartographically Vaugondy derives this map from the Virginia-Maryland portions of the 1755 Dalrymple edition of the Fry-Jefferson map. The Fry-Jefferson Map, from which this map is derived, initially issued in 1751, was the first major mapping of Virginia to deviate from the conventions laid down by the 1612 John Smith map. Unlike the Smith ... moreMap, the Fry-Jefferson map evolved from actual on-site survey work completed by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson. This map disseminated some of the first accurate data regarding the interior of Virginia. Vaugondy's map offers a wealth of interesting detail. These include two stunted wagon routes extending west from Maryland, then across the Potomac, that seem to fade away as they head southwest towards Frederick. Another stunted path to the west of the Blue Ridge Mountains is labeled'Route Indianne' Throughout mills, settlements, and even American Indian lands are noted. A beautifully engraved titile cartouche adorns the lower right quadrant of the map. Drawn by Robert de Vaugondy and published in the 1757 issue of his Atlas Universal.
