1862 Johnson Map of Richmond, Virginia and Vicinity (Peninsular Campaign)
1862 Johnson Map of Richmond. Virginia and Vicinity(Peninsular Campaign) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Johnson’s Map of the Vicinity of Richmond. And Peninsular Campaign in Virginia Showing also the interesting localities along the James, Chickahominy and York Rivers. Compiled from the official maps of the War Department. Description: This is a rare and important 1862 A. J. Johnson map of the vicinity of Richmond. Virginia, during the American Civil War. The map shows the Union advance during the Peninsular Campaign of the American Civil War, including considerable detail ranging from nautical depth soundings to individual buildings, wells, and bridges. The Peninsula Campaign(also known as the Peninsular Campaign) of the American Civil War was a major Union operation launched in southeastern Virginia from March ... morethrough July 1862 and the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. The operation, commanded by Major General George B. McClellan, was an amphibious turning movement against the Confederate Army in northern Virginia, intended to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. McClellan was initially successful against the equally cautious General Joseph E. Johnston, but the arrival of the bold and aggressive General Robert E. Lee turned the subsequent Seven Days Battles into a humiliating Union defeat. It is extremely rare to find this map in good condition as it fully occupied its page in the Johnson’s atlas, lacking space for substantial protective margins. Consequently any edge damage, common in old Johnson atlases, invariably severely impacted the map itself. The map is dated and copyrighted'Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1862 by J. Knowles Hare in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States of the Southern District of New York. Size: Printed area measures 18 inches high by 27 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Minor wear along original centerfold. Narrow margins. Minor verso repair along bottom margin. Shipping: Items are s

Confederate RICHMOND, VIRGINIA - Detailed 1862 Map (original) of Rebel Capital
Antique Civil War Map( original) Richmond. Virginia* And Surrounding Areas* Including Roads& Military Forts* Made in 18 62- This is a very historic engraved map published in 1862. Titled" Map of Richmond. Virginia, and Its Environs, Showing the Rebel Forts, Etc. it shows in great detail the Confederate capital and the region immediately around it. There is a tremendous amount of detail in this century-and-a-half-old map. With dozens of roads, railroads and forts illustrated. This is a great example of the engraver's art, made during the first full year of the Civil War, and it would make a very nice display piece when framed. This engraved map measures approximately 15-inches-by-10-inches. This map was made as a wood engraving. So called because the plate it was printed from was made from an engraved block of wood– as opposed ... moreto, for example, a"steel engraving" or a"copper engraving" which were printed from directly engraved metal plates) The item being offered in this auction is a map which was printed in Harper’s Weekly a century and a half ago. There are a few tiny spots of age browning. But these do not affect at all the great display potential of this 150-year-old map, which overall is in excellent condition, highly displayable, and ready for framing! This map is an ORIGINAL– IT IS GENUINE. NOT A REPRINT OR"REPRO" OF ANY SORT! It was printed 150 years ago and is absolutely guaranteed to be authentic. And not a later reprint or any other type of reproduction! A BRIEF HISTORY OF WOOD ENGRAVINGS This great antique map was produced during the decades when America’s illustrated journals employed some of the very best artists and engravers this country had to offer. To create a wood engraving. The artist would first draw his illustration on the surface of a very hard block of wood. Then the engravers went to wo

Richmond Manchester Virginia 1897 Cram antique detailed city plan map Richmond and Manchester. Virginia Issued 1897. Chicago by Cram Fine original antique map. Printed in the late 19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Very detailed city plan. In near VG or better condition. Light minor age wear, overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting antique map which will look nice when displayed. Sheet measures c. 11 1/4" H x 14 1/2" W. Printed area measures c. 9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" W[31011] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly ... morehave short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA - RICHMOND & SURROUNDING AREAS - Detailed 1863 Map (orig.)
Antique Civil War Map( original) CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA* Richmond and Surrounding Areas* Including Hundreds of Topographical Features* Made in 18 63- This is a very historic engraved map of Confederate Virginia published in 1863. Titled" A Topographical Map of EASTERN VIRGINIA. From Fredericksburg to Richmond, taken from tracings(now in the possession of the Government) of the original Railroad Surveys of this portion of the State, comprising the Topography for Six Miles on each side of the track. Above Richmond, the map extends up as far as Fredericksburg, and the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers. And between Richmond and Fredericksburg, various areas are delineated(including Spotsylvania Court House, later to be an important battle scene) There is a tremendous amount of detail in this century-and-a-half-old map. With dozens of roads and railroads illustrated, as well as hundreds of topographical features. This is a great example of the engraver's art, made during the height of the Civil War, and it would make a very nice display piece when framed. This engraved map measures approximately 15-inches-by-10-inches. This map was made as a wood engraving. So called because the plate it was printed from was made from an engraved block of wood– as opposed to, for example, a"steel engraving" or a"copper engraving" which were printed from directly

Antique prints often have faint vertical or horizontal lines visible. Rather than a defect. They are a fascinating historical artifact of the popular engraving process employed by newspapers at the time of the Civil War? During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. Seat of War in Virginia Road to Richmond James River 1862 antique engraved map
General Map of the Seat of War in Virginia. Showing the Road to Richmond(Civil War. James River, Potomac River, Petersburg, Dismal Swamp) Issued 1862. New York by Harper's Weekly A visually appealing antique wood engraved map. It is an original map extracted from a scarce 19th century illustrated popular periodical. In Good to Good+[or better] condition: displays moderate to heavy age toning as typical(particulary for Harper's image of this era) There may be light scattered spotting or staining. Slight waviness, soft crease across the sheet, light minor edge wear, possibly small minor edge repairs on the back with small pieces of archival tape. Any defects may hopefully be cleary seen in the scanned image. Please examine the scan closely as the picture forms a central part of the description. There is a zoom feature so you can see ... moreclose up. note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] There is text on the back because it was extracted from an illustrated periodical from the 19th century. Great fun to look at both sides. The only way to own this image as an original printed sheet from the 19th century. Harpers Weekly appeared to use an acidic wood pulp paper. This paper is now some what fragile. And must be handled carefully. We will ship this print inside an archival plastic sleeve, gently rolled within a sturdy tube. Overall. The map area remains clean and very attractive. Unique and arresting old printed map entirely worthy of hanging for display or presenting to someone as a present. Sheet measures c. 15 7/8" H x 10 3/4" W. Printed area measures c. 13 3/4" H x 9" W. 85950] Everything we offer is guaranteed to be an authentic original antique item as described.
