This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. In general, these maps are very detailed showing lines of approach, battle formations, forts, batteries, dates, various armies and officers involved, topography down to houses in many cases and other details and historical notes. The Union lines are in blue and the Confederate in Red. A very beautiful map that will frame up nicely! Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet as issued. Titled" Map of Richmond. Virginia, and Its Environs, Showing the Rebel Forts, Etc. it shows in great detail the Confederate capital and the region immediately around it. There is a tremendous amount of detail in this century-and-a-half-old map. With dozens of roads, railroads and forts illustrated. This is a great example of the engraver's art, made during the first full year of the Civil War, and it would make a very nice display piece when framed. This engraved map measures approximately 15-inches-by-10-inches. This map was made as a wood engraving. In intricate detail the map shows McClellan's failed attempt to take Richmond early in the War. The counties are individually hand water colored and a number of early railroads are shown with their names printed next to them. Variation 2 or Johnson Map Project number JMP-155-2.0. This particular map is pages 35 and 36. The map measures approximately 26 5/8" x 18 1/8" A lot of the edging is torn and discolored, and the borders are damaged; however the page numbers are not. There are also some water stains. Condition: The map ... moreis in Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics with a hint of a damp stain along the left margin and a few minor marks in the upper margin. Otherwise the map is very clean and would frame up well. In Good to Good+[or better] condition: displays moderate to heavy age toning as typical(particulary for Harper's image of this era) There may be light scattered spotting or staining. Slight waviness, soft crease across the sheet, light minor edge wear, possibly small minor edge repairs on the back with small pieces of archival tape. Any defects may hopefully be cleary seen in the scanned image. Please examine the scan closely as the picture forms a central part of the description. There is a zoom feature so you can see ... moreclose up. note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] There is text on the back because it was extracted from an illustrated periodical from the 19th century. Great fun to look at both sides. The only way to own this image as an original printed sheet from the 19th century. Harpers Weekly appeared to use an acidic wood pulp paper. This paper is now some what fragile. And must be handled carefully. We will ship this print inside an archival plastic sleeve, gently rolled within a sturdy tube. Overall.
