Framed Virginia Map with 1838 T.G. Bradford & Engraved by G.W. Boyton Notices
The wood frame housing a map of Virginia has an overall size of approximately 21 1/8" X 17 1/16" and is assembled from four wood frame boards which are 10/16" X 3/4" The visible portion of the map just inside the interior beveled edges of the matte board is approximately 16 3/16" X 12 1/16" The piece has an overall weight of just over 4 pounds without any packaging material included. The map is dominated by a colored image of the State of Virginia. With surrounding portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The lower left corner of the piece, just below the outer thin printed frame line, has text reading"Entered according to Act of Congress, in the Year 1838, by T. G. Bradford, in the Clerk's Office, of the District Court of Massachusetts" Text below the lower right ... morejust below the thin outer frame line reads"Engraved by G. W. Boyton" There appears to be thin band of slightly darkened surface paper around the outer edges of the exposed surface of the work where it adjoins the matte's inner beveled edges. This darkened band is more noticeable in the full sized photos along the right edge of the work next to the beveled edge. There is 1/8" spot on the lower right of the work about 3" from the right edge and just to the left of the engraved notice. There are scattered other small light spots on the work and the matte. With what appears to be some tiny particles of debris between the matte and glass. The frame members have rub wear. Marring and scratching, including a 1 1/2" long vertical gouge on the right edge that begins about 2 1/2" from the top. The back of the frame is covered with a stiff paper stock which has darkened. Two steel closed eye hooks have been screwed into the back of the frame and a piece of steel threaded wire strung between the two eye hooks. The two closed eye hooks have some surface rusting.
