This very attractive double page map sheet of TENNESSEE is from the 1899 printing of The Century Atlas of the World. The map itself is dated 1897. The atlas was"Prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith. A.M. and published by The Century Company, New York. The highly prized maps in this atlas were engraved by The Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, NY. The maps from The Century Atlas are acknowledged to be among the finest of the late 19th century. Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. The reverse side is blank. Map Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas - 1867/1870 - KY TN - US
This auction is for the map of 2 American states: Kentucky and Tennessee from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. This map is in its original unrestored state. The colors are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very legible. The center seam is still completely intact but has a couple of thin spots. There are a few stains but nothing out the detracts much from the map itself. I have tried to capture the most obvious flaws in the pictures. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor condition) but it has already been split up. I will be posting a few sections at a time but they are in ... morea pretty random order as I don't really know much about which may be more desirable. The printed map is slightly smaller. These are all original, hand painted maps that are two pages from the Johnson's Family Atlas that appear to be expertly spliced together. These maps are very old and somewhat brittle, and some may have tears and minor spotting. This particular map has a great deal of tearing, but could be repaired. An ORIGINAL antique 1864 map of VIRGINIA. WEST VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, and DELAWARE from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. The counties are individually hand water colored and a number of early railroads are shown with their names printed next to them. One of the first maps published of WEST VIRGINIA which had just become a State in 1863. Note that the plate used to make older maps of VIRGINIA had not been completely updated. The map still has the bold name"VIRGINIA" still printed across both States. This may have been done partly to appease Southerners who bought large numbers of Johnson's Atlases during the Civil War. What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads.
