Printed in the mid-19th century. On quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Original hand color. Map is very detailed for this date. In near VG or better condition. Light minor age wear, overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A fine impression of an interesting antique map which will look nice when displayed. Sheet measures c. 17 1/4" W x 14 1/4" H. Printed area measures c. 15 3/4" W x 11 3/4" H[19405] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be ... moreseen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. The map is based upon the work of John White and Jacques LeMoyne. As interpeted by De Bry's maps of the explorations. One of the last maps to cartographically predate Smith's contribution and the settlement of Jamestown. Le Moyne's lake in Florida has been moved to central Florida, to accomodate the St. May(St. Johns) River, which flows easterly. The influences of Wytfliet and Ribaut are in evidence. Nova Virginie Tabula Hand Colored Map of VA. MD and DE done by John Ogilby or Arnoldus Montanus 1671 Here is a great old map of the Chesapeake Bay area for your buying consideration. This map was originally done 342 years ago. Was fashioned after or used maps of the area by the John Smith expedition/settlement in the Jamestown. VA area earlier in that century. Recently picked this nice piece up at an auction. And remember. There is never any sales tax to our US customers as we live in Delaware, the home of tax free shopping! The map was created by either John Ogilby of London or Arnoldus Montanus in Amsterdam. One of these maps just sold at Christie's in 2011 for $1.500(then add the 25% buyers premium on to that of course. Ouch! and they could not figure out which of the two cartographers did the map either. Another one is for sale at ... morethe Old Print Shop in NYC for $2.500. Any help in identifying which of the two folks generated the map would be appreciated. Your identity would be kept anonymous. Thanks. The map looks to be in very good condition. The only issues I see to report is in the lower left corner under the"U" in Virginicum. Appears to be a stain or mark on the map about 1/2" below that. Also. Some small spotting in the lower Bay and going up into what is now the James River and to the east of the Susquehanna River. I see no rips or older repairs to the map, appears to still be intact from when originally generated. The hand coloring on this map was very well done. And check out all the details for the area at that time. The orientation of this map is very unique as well. A few of those islands showing in the Bay certainly are not there any more! The map was matted and framed by Main Line Art Supply in Narberth. PA many moons ago from the look of the backing and frame. The map has a simple wood frame around it that is finished in gold paint. The glass is still intact. No cracking or blistering of the glass. The framed piece is 14.75" tall, by 18-7/8" across, by 3/4" wide.

Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. Colonel Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson(Thomas Jefferson's father) surveyed and created the finest map at that time of the inhabited provinces of Virginia and Maryland. Not for another 40 years was another map maker to improve on this map. As a result derivatives were made. This map is the 1755 hand colored"1st" version published by Vaugondy in 1755 and issued in their Atlas Universal from 1757 onwards. For the most part. This was the earliest version available to the public. The map measures 31.5" by 21.5" overall with a sight size of 25.25" by 21.5" The ... morewords VIRGINIE& MARYLAND are stamped in large font on the reverse on both sides of the map.
