Description: An excellent ... more1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Kentucky and Tennessee. Like most of Colton's state maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Covers the both Kentucky and Tennessee in full as well as parts of the adjacent states. This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. Six years before this map was drawn the California gold discovery of 1849 enticed thousands to embark upon the rigorous transcontinental emigration. Meanwhile, with the rise in territorial population to the west of the Mississippi, the eastern states were becoming increasingly divided over the issues of slavery and state vs. federal sovereignty. Within five years these disputes would lead to the American Civil War. Although many major Civil War battles were fought in Tennessee, Kentucky officially remained'neutral' throughout the war. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. Issued as page no. 38 in volume 1 of Colton's 1856 Atlas of the World. In late 1864. The U S Senate appointed a Western Navy Yard Commission to select such a site, and they visited a number of locations on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. The final report of the Commission was in February 1865. Many of the maps were actually prepared prior to these dates by the U S Coastal Survey employees, but used with the final Commission report. With 4 insets of urban areas. In near VG or better condition. Light minor age wear and small stitch holes in the bottom blank margin but the image is overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. Mar. 7, 1837) of The National Atlas and Tuesday Morning Mail(and offered with that issue) Not Common Copper engraving 10-3/16 x 8-1/16" measures 8-3/4 x 11 with the margins. This is a seldom-seen map of Kentucky at the end of the Jacksonian period around the beginning of Martin Van Buren's presidency. Large areas of the state were still isolated. That had a very small subscribership, though we have not verified that. The issue of The National Atlas and Tuesday Morning Mail that accompanied this map is complete(16pp) and includes an extensive description of the situation of Kentucky at the time. There are also other articles of interest. With some illustrations. NOTE: While we are loath to disbind or disturb antiquarian paper items. Sometimes there is no help for it. This map and issue of the National Atlas and Tuesday Morning Mail came from a disbound and very distressed volume of a once-bound year's collection. Very little of it was salvageable except a few issues. Including this one and its map. CONDITION: Closed tear at the left edge; otherwise Very Good. Light browning to the right side and a few brown spots. One spot of light soiling at the bottom right edge. As issued the map was printed on the the deckled corner of a sheet.
