Description: This is an attractive 1855 U.S. Coast Survey nautical chart or map of the James River. Virginia. It covers the James River from Richmond to City Point, including part of the Appomattox River from Petersburg to the junction. The map offers excellent detail noting countless depth soundings and navigational notes, but little inland detail. However, it does identify the city of Petersburg located on the Appomattox River. Shortly after this map was produced, this region would witness the Appomattox Campaign, a series of battles fought in Virginia during the American ... moreCivil War, leading to the defeat of General Robert E. Lee and the end of the war in Virginia. The triangulation for this chart was accomplished by J. Farley and W. B. Trowbridg. The Topography is the work of J. Seib and S. A. Wainwright. Originally issued in the"Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" Which was issued in parts to subscribers over a period of years, but is sometimes found bound up later into atlas volumes. This oversize and attractive lithographed 19th century sheet depicts in great detail the specific events and locations of the Civil War battles or regions depicted. Astoundingly detailed. With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture visually and cartographically the regions and battles depicted. ... moreUnlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In Good+ to VG. Mostly clean condition. some light damp staining across the blank margin which will disappear once matted. An extra light crease running down each side of the sheet which does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the map and s ome light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In near VG. Mostly clean condition. Map displays numerous short minor edge-splits in the wide blank margins, all of which will disappear once the map is matted for display. In Good to Good+[or better] condition: displays moderate to heavy age toning as typical(particulary for Harper's image of this era) There may be light scattered spotting or staining. Slight waviness, soft crease across the sheet, light minor edge wear, possibly small minor edge repairs on the back with small pieces of archival tape. Any defects may hopefully be cleary seen in the scanned image. Please examine the scan closely as the picture forms a central part of the description. There is a zoom feature so you can see ... moreclose up. note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] There is text on the back because it was extracted from an illustrated periodical from the 19th century. Great fun to look at both sides. The only way to own this image as an original printed sheet from the 19th century. Harpers Weekly appeared to use an acidic wood pulp paper. This paper is now some what fragile. And must be handled carefully. We will ship this print inside an archival plastic sleeve, gently rolled within a sturdy tube. Overall. The map area remains clean and very attractive. Unique and arresting old printed map entirely worthy of hanging for display or presenting to someone as a present.
