THIS ITEM IS A GENUINE ORIGINAL VINTAGE MAP FROM THE SOURCE/DATE LISTED Name of Map- French island Bar(underwater hazard in Ohio River by Kentucky) Date- 1865 Comment- This map is one of a series of maps drawn and/or issued between 1862 and 1865 for the purpose of selecting a site for the construction of a Western Navy Yard. In late 1864. The U S Senate appointed a Western Navy Yard Commission to select such a site, and they visited a number of locations on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. The final report of the Commission was in February 1865. Many of the maps were actually prepared prior to these dates by the U S Coastal Survey employees, but used with the final Commission report. Original 1855 Survey Map SMITHLAND DAM Cumberland River Ohio Kentucky Dog Island Original lithographed fold-out survey chart of the Ohio River in the vicinity of Cumberland Island and Smithland. Kentucky, printed more than 158 years ago. The image area measures 33.7 x 75 cm[13-1/4" x 29-1/2" And the map is drawn on a scale of 880 feet to one inch. Details include soundings, locations of proposed and existing dams and jetties, and the low water lines of 1848 and 1855. It labels Cumberland Island and Dog Island, as well as the shorelines of Illinois and Kentucky. The map was compiled under the direction of Lieutenant James William Abert of the U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers. And published in a report to Congress by President Franklin Pierce. Its full title is Sketch of the Ohio River at Cumberland Dam. Illustrating Appx. Doc. ... moreNo. 3 Longs Annual Report Sept. 1855, Transferred from a sketch of C.A. Fuller Esqr. by J.W. Abert, Lt. U.S. Top. Eng. The scans below give a closer look: James William Abert was an American soldier. Explorer, ornithologist and topographical artist. Ten years before this map was compiled, John Charles Frémont gave Abert command of the Canadian River exploratory mission, and his description of the habits and customs of the Kiowa and Comanche Indians proved of great value to the federal government. Along with his maps and written accounts, Abert made several sketches and watercolors of native animals and outstanding Indian personalities, including the Kiowa chief Dohäsan. Condition: This map is trimmed to the neat in the lower left corner. And some of the folds have been reinforced on the reverse side with archival tape. It is printed on lightweight paper, typical of government documents of the time and has toned slightly along the folds, although the camera tends to exaggerate this. This map came from an original 1886 Indiana Atlas. It is 17 3/8 by 14 1/2 inches. One side shows the Ohio River including Falls of the Ohio. Steam ferry boats, Jeffersonville and lots more. The other side shows Clark County including the town of Bethlehem and more. The Ohio River side is in very good condition with a couple of slight spots. The Clark County side has more spots. The map has been carefully stored in a smoke free home for many years. The map will be shipped in a mailing tube.
