The latch is tin that has a brass wash coating. It has aged to a nice rustic brass color. I cleaned the latch and washed it with water so it is ready to use for many years to come. It was made in the early 1900's. I put a drop of oil inside so it works well with a nice strong spring. Wire brushed and cleaned with scotch brite. The parts were sprayed with 2 coats of clear acrylic lacquer finish made by Sherwin Williams that is specially made for cast iron. It's a bit hard to read but I have had others which are more readable and are identical so I am confident that it is the correct date. Actually looks like Feb 7. 1871. It is in beautiful condition! No rust. The T bar turns easily and functions perfectly. It is complete, both pieces of the latch and with the original screws. It measures 2 1/8' X 2 1/8' when installed.
