John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. If so, the maps were then edited by Speed to give them a unified style. The streets are shown in plan, and the principal buildings are drawn in elevation: the result resembles an aerial view. During the mid 19th Century many books of travel and exploration were published by Tallis, using the extraordinary artistic and engraving skills of John Rapkin. Beginning in 1851, John Tallis& Co. issued their Illustrated Atlas, which contained maps of all parts of the world. First is the General Map of the British Islands The other THREE maps show the same region in considerably more detail: Northern Great Britain; Southern Great Britain and Ireland There are inset maps of Central Scotland. Edinburgh, Orkney and the Shetland Islands, The Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight/Portsmouth/Southampton, London(x2) the Industrial District of Lancashire and Yorkshire, and Dublin. Maps measure about 13.5" x 17" and each is printed on a single sheet with a fold in the center. sheet size is about 16" x 19" I have a large scanner. But this map is a little too big for it-about 3 inches along the bottom, and a little bit on the top and sides ... moredo not appear in the first scan below. The second scan below shows a close-up to demonstrate detail and quality; and the third scan shows the legend for the map(which is printed on the reverse) Legend text is repeated in English; French; Italian and Spanish. The map was printed in Germany by Justus Perthes. And the text on the FACE of the map is predominantly in German. Condition: Very Good. Clean. Un-marked, and un-foxed. This is a beautifully printed map. Text is extremely sharp and color is well registered and attractive. This is a Copperplate Engraved map from the 9th Edition of Stieler's Atlas of Modern Geography. Bradshaws Railway Map of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Bradshaw's Railway map on paper. Published by Henry Blacklock, London and Manchester. The map is not dated and does not have a cover. The explanation on the map refers to Northern Ireland and the Irish free state so guess it is post 1921. I assume that it was included in a Bradshaws book/ guide at some time. It measures approx. 30cm x 40cm and is whole and in a clean condition. There are a few faint brown spots/ blemishes. One side of the map covers England and Southern Scotland. The reverse Northern Scotland and Ireland.

1688 De Fer Map- Isles Britaniques Nicolas De Fer was the official geographer to the French king as well as being a successful publisher"dans l'Isle du Palais sur le Quay de l'Orloge a la Sphere royale' in Paris. Among his many atlases was his'Introduction de la Fortification. first issued in 1693 and showing the defensive sites of major European cities. However he also did a series of world maps for'Methode pour apprendre geographie' published by Jacques Robbe. The same maps were used in'El Atlas Abreviado' by Francisco de Aefferden and published in Madrid and Antwerp.
