Cartographer: Gilles(1688- 1766) and Didier(c. 1723- 1786) Robert de Vaugondy were map publishers. Engravers, and cartographers active in Paris during the mid-18th century. The father and son team are descended from the important Sanson cartographic firm, from whom they inherited much of their initial material. The Vaugondys were well respected for the detail and accuracy of their maps. They were known for making excellent use of the considerable resources available in 18th century Paris to produce the most accurate and fantasy-free maps possible. The Vaugondys compiled their maps based upon their own superior geographic knowledge, scholarly research, the journals of contemporary explorers and missionaries, and direct astronomical observation. Many Vaugondy maps are also highly praised for their title cartouches, which identify each of the sources referenced- an unusual level of scholar decorum for 18th century France. Their most important work is the beautifully produced Atlas Universel. View My Feedback View My Other Items For Sale Visit my eBay Store All of the maps we sell are ORIGINALS. We guarante

HISTORIC Saxon Heptarchy Replica Gicleé PRINTED J Speed 17c. Old Map
DESCRIPTION You are bidding on an exquisite Gicleé Printed Reproduction of the John Speed original. The size and detail are faithfully reproduced from an original. This is a beautiful representation of'Britain as it was devided in the tyme of the Enghfhe: Saxons efpecially during their Heptarchy' from a copy of Speed's Prospect of the World from 1676. Arguably. The most famous map of the British Isles, with fourteen side border vignettes illustrating seven of the earliest Saxon kings(between AD 456 and 582) and the conversion to Christianity of their successors(595 to 662) Superbly decorative, it was copied by both Blaeu and Jansson for their British atlases in the 1640s. This map was in use before the advent of motor cars. Railways and canals. John Speed was the most famous of all English map-makers. He published an atlas ... moreof the counties of Britain, entitled"The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" in 1611 and followed it with'Prospect of the most famous parts of the world' in 1627. His original maps are highly prized and fetch many hundreds of pounds when they come on the market. Here you have the opportunity to own a Printed facsimile for a fraction of the price of the original! Measuring c. 21" x 16" this map has been reproduced onto quality cream 120gsm vellum paper. In the past if you wanted a John Speed Map. You either had to pay hundreds, if not, thousands of pounds for a genuine one, that is if you could find one. Or else you had to settle for cheap colour printed or black and white copies costing a few pounds. These printed copies quite often are treated to resemble'parchment' although I am not sure why, because original John Speed maps are never ever printed on parchment! Well now there is another choice! Our maps are either Gicleé Printed or individually hand coloured, making each one unique and very desirable. This example is PRINTED. As each map is an individual work of art in it's own right. Each is unique and may differ slightly fro
