Genuine map from a period encyclopedia. Not a modern copy. I've sold about 50 of these. Mainly for £4.90 each but for some reason I cant sell to the good people of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Size approx 11" by 8" Good condition for age but staining to top right and mid left and poor at top as not cut out well. Would look lovely framed Will post in a card backed envelope. On some of the maps the changes in towns is shown with crude amendment such was the hurry in printing these maps. Here is some more information about this series of maps. The first 1-inch War Revision sheets were issued in the Summer of 1940. Ordnance Survey’s priority was England& Wales because the threat of invasion was felt to be greater in the southern part of Great Britain. The first Scottish War Revision sheets were not issued until June 1941. The‘War Revision 1940’ used the latest civilian 1-inch sheets available in the correct size ... morewith the addition of a military grid overprint and- if there was time- a few important revisions. Once produced. These sheets took on the‘GSGS 3907’ or‘GSGS 3908’ title. Eleven sheets in the south-west of England used the 1-inch Fifth Edition sheet lines and mapping although elsewhere 1-inch Popular Edition or 1-inch Popular Edition of Scotland sheet lines and mapping were used. First printed in 1720, covered all of the principal roads of England and Wales for the horse and rider with every mile marked along the way and all of the landmarks noted- churches, houses, windmills, watermills, streams and uphill/downhill topography(downhills are identified by upside-down hills) Interesting notes about towns, such as market days, are added to the sides. Each strip has its own compass rose to help guide the traveller. This map follows two roads to the east coast of England in Yorkshire. The left two strips cover 15 miles of road running over the Yorkshire Moors and dropping down into Whitby. Based in London from 1714 onwards. Bowen was highly regarded for producing some of the largest, most detailed, most accurate and most attractive maps of his era. He is known to have worked with some of the most prominent cartographic names of the period including Herman Moll, John Owen, and Thomas Kitchin. Despite his renown and success, Bowen, like many cartographers, died in poverty. Upon Emanuel Bowen's death, his cartographic work was taken over by his son, Thomas Bowen( 1790) who also died in poverty.
