1809 HISTORY SCOTLAND Robertson MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS Stuart JAMES VI ELIZABETH I
THE HISTORY OF SCOTLAND By William Robertson. D.D. 3 VOLUMES 1809 SUBTITLE: DURING THE REIGNS OF QUEEN MARY AND KING JAMES VI. TILL HIS ACCESSION TO THE CROWN OF ENGLAND: WITH A REVIEW OF THE SCOTTISH HISTORY PREVIOUS TO THAT PERIOD; AND AN APPENDIX CONTAINING ORIGINAL PAPERS. William Robertson(1721– 93) Scottish churchman and historian. He was born at Borthwick. Mid Lothian, on the 19 th of September 1721 and educated at the school of Dalkeith and the University of Edinburgh. Robertson was one of the first to approach history as an empirical science. His History of Scotland during the Reigns of Queen Mary and James VI. Is a factual, pragmatic history, which was praised by Edmund Burke, David Hume, and others. Soon after its success. He became principal of the Univ. of Edinburgh and historiographer royal. He was to go on to write several ... moremore notable historical works. These volumes begin with a biography of his life, which is quite interesting in itself. Mary. Queen of Scots(1542– 1587) Also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland was six days old when her father, James V, died, and she succeeded to the thrown as the only legitimate heir. Her father had married Mary of Guise. Who brought a large French contingent to Scotland with her. Meanwhile. The Reformation was changing Scotland largely through the efforts of John Knox. The religious issue was inextricably connected with opposition to the French Roman Catholic party of Mary of Guise(queen regent after James’s death in 1542) and of her daughter Mary Queen of Scots who lived in France as dauphiness and then as queen. By the time Mary Queen of Scots arrived(1561) in Scotland Catholicism had almost disappeared from the Lowlands. The turbulent career of the young queen hinged primarily on her personal involvements and on the conflict between the crown and the nobility. Now divided into pro-French(Catholic) and pro-English(Protestant) parties. Elizabeth I of England maintained the Protestant party with money and arms. Mary’s struggle ended in loss o
Mary Stuart's Scotland by David and Judy Steel, 1995
Beautiful book! It includes the landscapes. Life and legends of Mary Queen of Scots. It measures 9 1/4" L x 11 1/4" H. 160 pages. Photographs are by Eric Thorburn. There is a very tiny crease on the very top of the book. Hardly noticeable. This is shown in the photo. Also the outer spine is slightly loose. The very tips of the corners and bottom of spine show white dots from shelf wear which is also not very noticeable. I just want to make sure everything is disclosed. Having pointed this out, the rest of the book is in very good condition. The inside binding is tight. The pages are clean and crisp. There are no torn pages, no writing, or no nameplates. The inside looks like it's hardly been read. Very nice! I always try to ship items the same day as payment is received. Shipping charges pertain to domestic shipping only. Beautiful Large 1922 Times Map of Southern Scotland
A fine antique map from The Times Survey Atlas of the World SCOTLAND SOUTHERN SECTION Provenance The Times Survey Atlas and Gazetteer of the World by J.G. Bartholomew Published London: The Times Printing House. 1922. All the maps we are selling come from the same original 1922 atlas. Cartographer J.G. Bartholomew. Cartographer to the King. Size/ Format 22.5" x 17.5" 57.6 cm x 44.8 cm) One fold in the centre. The margins are clean and range form 0.5" to 0.8" 1-2 cm) on all sides. These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Which means they can easily be removed as a single sheet with a fold in the centre. Condition Very good. The colors are bright and fresh. The maps themselves. And the margins, are very clean. There are no tears, stains, discolorations or soiling whatsoever. The atlas from which these maps were ... moreremoved did NOT spend its life at a public library. It was part of a private collection and was treated very well. Remarks The publication of the Times Survey Atlas in 1922 was the culmination of six years of painstaking work and. With the combination of political and the physical colour range from dark green to dark brown to indicate elevation, it marked the beginning of the age of'modern cartography. It surpassed any atlas before it in terms of scope(112 double-page folio map) and accuracy. Many of the maps published in this atlas were used in other atlases in many countries as recently as the 1970s. These maps will look great framed and hung individually or, on a large wall, in groups. This edition of The Times Atlas features about thirty polotical maps and about ninety maps that display both physical and political characteristics(the now-familiar use of green and brown to show elevation) Map Size = 57.6 cm x 44.8 cm Click the image below to see more maps from this atlas.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*g7e6e%3D%3E-13d18f01985-0xf8-

Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas was a major cartographic work published in several German and foreign editions 1881-1937. It was named after Richard Andree(1835-1912) and published by Velhagen& Klasing, Bielefeld and Leipzig, Germany. By using chromolithography, rather than copper plate engraving, but reproducing the maps from zinc plates that were etched in relief(just like letterpress printing) V& K was able to offer detailed maps at a much lower price than competing works, such as the 7th and 8th editions of Stielers Handatlas. Artists and Engravers: Richard ... moreAndree(1835- 1912) was. Like his father Karl Andree, a German geographer noted for devoting himself especially to ethnography. His main work, however, is his Allgemeiner Handatlas(Leipzig, first edition 1881, final edition 1937) one of the most comprehensive world atlases of all times. The early editions of the Times Atlas of the World(1895-1900) are based on this atlas, as was Cassell's Universal Atlas. Subject: Map: Schottland' Map of Scotland.
