Offering this collection of old compasses. There are 5 here including: The hunter pop open cased compass circa WWll made by Wittnauer in good working condition with some rust on the hands. It may be military but not stamped US. Also a german made Hoffritz double sided compass with a distance measurer for a map on the flip side that converts centimeters run on a map to kilometers on land. The hands on the compass side are rusty but functional. The little measuring wheel is brass. Next is the smallest made in England with a fold out magnifying glass(a quality one) light weight and can be put on a lanyard or cord. Only a small dent on this. Works well. Next is a Doxa from Japan a souvenir compass with the side needle lock and a leather belt clip that reads"Huntsville Alabama" in good shape. 1607 Norden Kip Map Surrey Genuine Antique Old Vintage England London Guildford
Surrey Olim Sedes Regnorum.Johanes Norden Deliniauit. W.Kip Sculpsit. A fine example of an early English County map from William Camden's"Britannia" first published in 1607 with later editions in 1610 and 1637. Guaranteed genuine and original. There is a plate number"9" lower left which suggests it is from a later edition(pencil verso suggests the 1637 edition) Camden's book was the first to have maps showing each county individually. So in fact this is the earliest such county map available for collectors. Most of the maps in the series are by Kip or Hole based on Saxton's maps. Surrey is one of the few to be drawn by John Norden, a distinguished surveyor in his own right. So the map would have his original survey work incorporated within it. It is fascinating to see London(which is displayed prominently top ... moreleft) ending at Southwark, with the villages below(now Stockwell, Dulwich, Streatham, and Croydon etc. these all now incorporated within Greater London. This is a good example. With what appears to be at least old colouring, possibly original, and if there are small faults in the margins, the map itself is in a good state for so old an item. Photographed in a mount it will be sent rolled in a tube, removed from the mount. Detailed condition:There is a 1cm hole top left in the margin. Not visible under the mount. No loss to the map. Tape down left and right margin, at the very edge where it was attached to the backing. Good margins top(2cms) and bottom(2.5cms) 1cm. margins at each side. The map itself is a little grubby and creased, but only as one would expect of an item nearly 400 years old! Fine old(original? handcolouring. Centrefold as issued. When unfolded the map measures 17” by 26” approximately. It is dated 1884 When folded up. The small book is 3 ¾” by 5 ¾” The map appears to be hand tinted to me. The map is a bit brittle. There are small splits at the cross folds. One corner was dog-eared and along one side the paper was mis-folded. The map is clean and unmarked. The binding is pretty nice. The spine is rubbed through in one small spot and in one ¾” long spot. Inside. The hinge is split. Please look carefully at the photos and ask questions. I am not a“Map” person. Vintage WW2 Map Reader Pocket Folding Loupe Magnifying Glass Hand Lens ENGLAND
You are looking at a Vintage WW2 Map Reader. It is a Pocket Folding Loupe. Or Magnifying Glass, made in ENGLAND. This is 1 3/4 inches long, and just under 1 inch wide. I tried to take some photos looking through the lens so you can see how powerful it is. I have a road map in another listing. The road map and this magnifying piece were in the same foot locker. I can just imagine the men using this eye glass with the map in the field. It is so amazing what these men had to work with. And how they made it through. We are auctioning off this DENOYER GEPPERT H18 INDUSTRIAL ENGLAND VINTAGE CLASSROOM PULLDOWN MAP 1960. Acquired from a university that had these stored away for years. Map comes as shown. Some cosmetic wear and warping. Though we see no cut or tears in the fabric or map itself. Some of the map need a pin thru the bottom hook to hold from rolling ... moreback up. May be some scuffing and scratching from use. May still bright and colorful and great for framing. The Metal hanging rod is included and measures approx. 48 inches wide. The map itself will measure approx 43 1/2" wide by 31-33" tall(mostly the white part with area for framing) We are not grading experts, so know these maps were used in a classroom experience and now have been available for public enjoyment.
