You are bidding for an Old Map of Merionethshire. Which at one time was in a book, as the No 109 appears at the top right hand corner of the map. The map is 7and1/2 ins high and 5 ins wide. and at the bottom written in fine old style handwriting is a little bit of information regarding the county of Merioneth. I do not know its age but looking at the paper.The colours and the handwriting I would say that it is a genuine antique map of Merioethshire. A very uncommon and charming mid-19th century map which likely appears no where else and would be very difficult to locate again. In Good+ or better condition. Light foxing or age toning which does not detract visually from image[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains pleasing. ~ c1695 Hand Coloured Map Of South Wales By Robert Morden ~ An early map of South Wales c1695 by the famous cartographer Robert Morden(c1650-1703) which has been hand coloured. The map has been freshly reframed and mounted. ~ Robert Morden ~ Robert Morden(c.1650-1703) was a British bookseller. Publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His catographical output was large and varied. His best known maps are those of English counties first published in a new edition of Camden's"Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. ... moreEach had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is in parts(e.g. Skye and the Western Isles) essentially a copy of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch. Published by Blaeu; other parts show evidence of more accurate cartography. He is also known for several very rare early maps of theBritish colonies of North America which are now among the earliest and most sought after maps for collectors of old American maps. SCROLL DOWN FOR PICTURES. This auction is for an original map by John Speed. It is called Merionethshire. 1610(which is in Wales, UK) It is the Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell edition of 1676. It is framed(not glued down) The frame is about 21 3/4 x 27" The visible map is about 15 1/2 x 20 1/2" Excellent condition- I bought it framed. So I don't know what the paper edges look like. The visible map is in excellent condition. It could be shipped in the frame as shown(rate calculator assumes this) Or it could be removed from the frame and shipped in a tube, which will cost a lot less. This is sheet 77 showing the route from Monmouth to Lampeter passing through Abergavenny. Brecon and Llanimdofry and numerous smaller settlements. The map, which has a title cartouche incorporating the royal coat of arms and a decorative surround incorporating putti and goats, measures approx 420mm x 330mm with margins beyond and is blank verso. John Rocque was a surveyor and cartographer. The son of French Huguenot's who came to England in 1709. In addition to his work as surveyor and mapmaker. Rocque was an engraver and map-seller. Rocque is now mainly remembered for his map of London. He began work on this in 1737 and it was published in 24 printed sheets in 1747. It was by far the most detailed map of London published up to that time, and remains an important historical resource. The map of London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. A fire in 1750 destroyed his premises and stock. But by 1753 he was employing ten draughtsmen, and produced" The Small British Atlas: Being a New set of Maps of all the Counties of England and Wales" Thirty three of these maps were reprinted in"England Displayed. in 1769.
