As published in 1895. The map covers Hull and the area south and west including Barton upon Humber, Winterton and South Cave. Coverage is Hull and the area westward to South Cave and Broomfleet. And southward across the Humber to Ulceby and Saxby All Saints. The Humber then was a clear unbridged divide between Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, and so it is appropriate that on the back we have a detailed map of New Holland, showing the station and pier head, for the ferries across to Hull. Much the largest town on the map, of course, is Hull, but South Cave, Barton upon Humber and Winterton are also classed as towns by the O

1870's City map of Hull
City map of Hull by A. C. Black. Edinburgh. There is no date on it but I understand it is 1870's. It shows in good detail the area boundaried by Albert street, Pearson Park, Stoneferry road, Hedon road, Southcoates station, the river. It shows the docks, Hull Union Workhouse off Anlaby road, the'Lunatic Asylum' near Deringham street, Kingston Almshouse, Stepney Mills etc. It also has a key showing more places in the city centre. It is in very good condition. It looks as if it came from a book as it is folded down the middle. The print is nice and clear. It is very clean. Though not absolutely perfect, given its age. After the Dunkirk Evacuation at the end of May 1940. The threat of invasion was now very real. The Second World War had come to the Home Front. The military turned to their maps of Great Britain- produced by the Ordnance Survey- to find them woefully outdated and inadequate. Ordnance Survey immediately dropped work on the and began an intensive programme of updating the military’s sheets. Before 1940. The military’s maps of England& Wales had the unmemorable series title‘GSGS 3907’ and of Scotland‘GSGS 3908’ These were based on the sheet ... morelines and mapping of the and. Although the military and civilian series developed separately. The‘War Revision 1940’ used the latest civilian 1-inch sheets available in the correct size. With the addition of a military grid overprint and- if there was time- a few important revisions. Once produced, these sheets took on the‘GSGS 3907’ or‘GSGS 3908’ title. Eleven sheets in the south-west of England used the sheet lines and mapping. Although elsewhere or sheet lines and mapping were used. The first 1-inch War Revision sheets were issued in the Summer of 1940. Ordnance Survey’s priority was England& Wales. HULL(QUEENS DOCK) 1853 KINGSTON UPON HULL SHEET 8 BRAND NEW. UNUSED IN SUPERB CONDITION For the central area of Hull Godfreys have reproduced four of the very early Five-foot plans. Originally published at a scale of 1:1056 or 5 feet to the mile. We have reduced them in scale to 1:1760 or a Yard to the Mile. The maps, though covering quite a small area, are wonderfully detailed, showing such features as capstans and mooring posts, lamp-posts, the layouts of back yards, and even the interior of certain buildings such as churches. For the urban historian they are perhaps the most fascinating maps ever published by the Ordnance Survey. This wonderfully detailed map covers the area around and to the north of Queen's Dock. The printed area measures approx 690mm x 580mm(27x22 inches)with margins beyond and the sheet is blank verso. Overall the map is in very good condition with a clean and clear impression.
