This is an original. Antique, large and beautifully engraved hand colored map of the English county of Middlesex- with inset views of Westminster Abbey on the lower left and Saint Paul’s Cathedral on the lower right. It measures a whopping 25.25”x 31.25”and was engraved by J&J Neele and published July 4. 1829- the date is engraved in the title cartouche and was published in the large folio edition of Atlas of the Counties of England. 1834. The engraving is based on a survey conducted during the years 1819-1820. The paper is heavy and stable and hand colored in shades of green. Pink, yellow, orange and blue. There is a 1.25” repaired tear located on the upper left of the“Explanation” as seen in the photo. The piece is a delightful piece of English History. Up for bid is the vintage/antique. ORIGINAL PRINT of a JOHN OVERTON, LONDON 1670"A NEW AND ACCVRAT MAP OF THE WORLD. professionally matted& framed, as seen in the pictures/ as described in the title. I believe this is a lithograph print on aged paper. Signed" in pencil at lower right corner(visible in frame) Marked"SERIES M1- HOFFMAN-LA ROCHE INC. NUTLEY 10, N.J. at lower left corner(not visible in frame, see below) Both frame and print are in excellent/ near mint condition with NO major defects whatsoever. Frame is structurally strong& solid with only very minor/small and minimal cosmetic blemishes(see pics) Made of a heavy/high density wood(exact type unknown) with a gold-tone inner border. Real glass(not plexi) No cracks, chip, scratches, etc. Paper backing was intact when found but I had to open it up to investigate ... morethe map. I did so VERY by carefully running an exacto knife along 3-sides, gently bending the steel diamond nails, removing the cardboard backing and lightly peeling one corner of the print up. I never removed the print from the frame. Photographed the hidden(by mat) text, inspected with magnifying glass for and found dots(which I believe confirms that it is not an original etching) then immediately reversed the process, securing the paper backing with(2) small pieces of tape at top corners(further taping at each edge is recommended but I wanted to leave that up to you) Mat is an unusual woven fabric/fiber material and is noticeably thicker at bottom than at top. I first thought it was surely homemade but the sticker(H. Schaffer Picture Framing in West New York, N.J. see last pic) at rear has me thinking otherwise. Either way, it is unique and interesting and I dig it! The map features some magnificent imagery and it is amazing how accurate it actually is(except that California is shown as an island, haha) I also find it thought-provoking that a mere 343 years ago, virtually the entire southern hemisphere was simply unknown. I bet it bothered map makers of the day

Surrey Olim Sedes Regnorum.Johanes Norden Deliniauit. W.Kip Sculpsit. A fine example of an early English County map from William Camden's"Britannia" first published in 1607 with later editions in 1610 and 1637. Guaranteed genuine and original. There is a plate number"9" lower left which suggests it is from a later edition(pencil verso suggests the 1637 edition) Camden's book was the first to have maps showing each county individually. So in fact this is the earliest such county map available for collectors. Most of the maps in the series are by Kip or Hole based on Saxton's maps. Surrey is one of the few to be drawn by John Norden, a distinguished surveyor in his own right. So the map would have his original survey work incorporated within it. It is fascinating to see London(which is displayed prominently top ... moreleft) ending at Southwark, with the villages below(now Stockwell, Dulwich, Streatham, and Croydon etc. these all now incorporated within Greater London. This is a good example. With what appears to be at least old colouring, possibly original, and if there are small faults in the margins, the map itself is in a good state for so old an item. Photographed in a mount it will be sent rolled in a tube, removed from the mount. Detailed condition:There is a 1cm hole top left in the margin. Not visible under the mount. No loss to the map. Tape down left and right margin, at the very edge where it was attached to the backing. Good margins top(2cms) and bottom(2.5cms) 1cm. margins at each side. The map itself is a little grubby and creased, but only as one would expect of an item nearly 400 years old! Fine old(original? handcolouring. Centrefold as issued. An attractive and large steel-engraved. Hand-coloured county map of Middlesex, published by Greenwood and Co in London in 1829. The map depicts the county of Middlesex in some detail and also includes a decorative title cartouche, compass rose, Explanation' and'Reference to the Hundreds' as well as two very fine engravings of St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The printed area measures approx 650mm x 540mm with margins beyond and the sheet is blank verso. Overall the map is in quite good condition with a clean and clear impression. However. Buyers should note that there are large closed tears at the top and bottom of the centrefold, the top one in particular extends 20cm into the printed area, fortunately without any loss. This fold becomes nearly invisible when the map is laid flat. If the map is framed. The fold becomes completely invisible unless inspected very closely. Condition The maps are in very good condition. The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional spot or unobtrusive mark in the margins of a few ... moreof the maps. It was by far the most detailed map of London published up to that time, and remains an important historical resource. Cary’s publications did much to advance the quality and clarity of data presentation on maps. His county maps for Richard Gough’s edition of Camden’s Britannia in 1789 evidenced much improved hachuring(shading to show land relief and physical features) when compared with earlier examples– Cary’s hachuring was much less overbearing than that used ... moreby other mapmakers at this time and did not obscure map data. Marylebone, London – Antique Segmented Map, Late 19th Century (I think)
A very detailed Edward Stanford map of the area. Undated. But my view is that it’s late nineteenth century; the reason being I believe the boundary shown on the map is the old parliamentary constituency as it existed from 1868 to 1885. The basis for the map is the six-inch to a mile map of London first published by Stanford’s in 1872, but this map has definitely been updated from then. The reason for the map is to show the locations of schools. Against the hugely detailed street plan. Condition is very good. The sheet measures approx 72cm x 76cm. And the paper map has been dissected into 12 segments and mounted on linen, as originally issued. The map itself is evenly toned and remains clean and very fresh in appearance. The linen showing through is slightly dust soiled along the bits exposed when folded, with also the paper along the bottom ... morehorizontal fold a littled browned) but overall very good and without holes. On the verso lightly tanned and a very small amount of bubbling- but overall very clean and flat and there is marbled paper on the folded end segments with minor handling marks. The son of French Huguenot's who came to England in 1709. In addition to his work as surveyor and mapmaker. Rocque was an engraver and map-seller. Rocque is now mainly remembered for his map of London. He began work on this in 1737 and it was published in 24 printed sheets in 1747. It was by far the most detailed map of London published up to that time, and remains an important historical resource. The map of London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. A fire in 1750 destroyed his premises and stock. Which is heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, I would say around 1910. Unfolded it measures about 3ft by 4ft Scale is 3 miles: 1 Inch It is map number 3 on the Philips system. And shows London, Sussex, Essex and Kent. Lots of interesting detail now long gone! Overall condition is good. The Green fabric and Board cover is rubbed around the edges and has some marks. The map itself is a little grubby. But is without holes or splits. In addition.Their is a very detailed inset map of the River Thames as far as London. The map is full of rhumb lines, sand banks,and numerous depth soundings. Contemporary early or original colouring which is confirmed by the pigments used in the early colouring causing some very fine cuts in border lines in the odd places which have all been profesionally reinforced on the obverse on those odd areas it occurs. I would stress that there is absolutely no loss to the map other than two small border losses and a fine line in part of the fold. which I have shown on attached pics. The picture of the obverse confirms no loss of paper. I will be happy to supply further detailed pics upon request.
